An all-new Star Trek novel from New York Times bestselling author Greg Cox, taking place in the blockbuster Original Series era!The year is 2255, not long after the events of the Original Series episode “The Cage.” A young Spock is science officer on the U.S.S. Enterprise, under the command of Captain Christopher Pike, when an outbreak of deadly Rigelian fever threatens the crew. Reviewing the Starfleet medical database, Dr. Phillip Boyce comes up with a highly experimental and untested new treatment that might save the crew. Just one problem: it requires a rare mineral substance, ryetalyn, which is not easily obtained…except on a remote alien colony near the Klingon border. But borders are somewhat blurry in this part of galaxy. Pike will need to tread carefully in order to avoid provoking an armed conflict with the Klingons—or starting an all-out war. ™, ®, & © 2015 CBS Studios, Inc. Eighteen years later “Rigelian fever, Captain. There’s no doubt about it.” Spock overheard the doctor’s report from his station on the bridge of the U.S.S Enterprise. The young science officer listened intently while simultaneously monitoring sensor readings of the surrounding space. As the ship was presently conducting a routine survey of an uninhabited star system, no other urgent matters required his attention. He suspected that the rest of the bridge crew was also paying close attention to the conversation in the command well. “How bad is it?” Captain Christopher Pike asked, getting straight to the point. Still in the prime of life, he was a fit Earthman of North American descent, with an athletic build, dark hair, and icy blue eyes that conveyed both keen intelligence and concern. His gold command turtleneck uniform contrasted with the blue science tunic Spock wore. A strong chin rested thoughtfully on his knuckles. “How many crew members are affected?” “It’s spreading fast,” Doctor Phillip Boyce said gravely. The older man, clad in a standard blue medical jumpsuit, stood by the captain’s chair at the center of the bridge. Thinning silver hair and lean, deeply lined features betrayed that he was approaching retirement age, at least by human standards. An Earth symbol was emblazoned over his heart, indicating that he had received the bulk of his medical training on his home planet. “My sickbay is filling up and more crew members are showing symptoms by the hour. I’ve instituted standard quarantine procedures, but I’m afraid that amounts to locking the barn door after the horse has already bolted. We could be looking at a full-fledged outbreak here.” “Damn,” Pike muttered under his breath. A serious expression grew even more somber. “Can you treat it, Doctor?” “I’m trying,” Boyce said, “but this appears to be an unusually virulent new strain of the disease, which is proving resistant to conventional treatment.” He shook his head ruefully. “I might as well be handing out sugar pills . . . or martinis.” Pike nodded. “What about unconventional treatments?” “Funny you should ask,” Boyce answered. “I’ve been scouring the medical literature—in my copious spare time, of course—and there are reports of a radical new treatment that has yielded some promising results so far. It’s highly experimental, though, and has barely begun clinical trials on humans.” He frowned. “I’d hate to turn our crew into guinea pigs.” Spock understood that Boyce was not speaking of a literal metamorphosis, but was merely employing a quaint human idiom. He made a mental note to review the relevant literature on this new treatment at the first opportunity. Medicine was a science, despite the doctor’s occasional protestations to the contrary, and biochemistry was but one of many disciplines in which Spock prided himself on being well-versed. “We may have no other choice, Doctor.” Pike glanced toward the navigation station. “Mister Tyler, how far to the nearest Starfleet medical facility?” Spock had already performed the necessary calculations in his head, but let Lieutenant José Tyler carry out his duties. Years of serving aboard the Enterprise had taught Spock that humans sometimes reacted negatively to being “shown up” by another, particularly where their own responsibilities and fields of expertise were concerned. It was an illogical and emotional response—data was data after all—but, in this instance, there appeared to be no compelling reason to answer the captain’s query before Tyler did. The young Earthman was a skilled and highly capable navigator. An extra moment would make no significant difference. “Starbase 17 is closest,” Tyler reported promptly. Blond hair and boyish features made him seem even more youthful than his actual years. “But even at top speed, it will take us weeks to get there.” Four point zero eight weeks, Spock thought. To be precise. “Weeks we may not have,” Boyce said. “We haven’t lost any crew members yet, but you know how nasty Rigelian fever can be if not treated. It can go from basic to pneumonic to septic in a matter of days, leading to shock, seizures, and eventually death.” “You don’t have to paint a picture for me, Doctor,” Pike said. “All right, then. What do you need to carry out this experimental new treatment, if necessary?” “That’s where it gets tricky,” Boyce confessed. “The treatment requires significant quantities of a rare mineral substance called ryetalyn, which is not commonly found on Federation starships . . . or most anywhere else for that matter.” “So where can we get our hands on some of this . . . ryetalyn?” Pike asked, trying out the unfamiliar word. He had never heard of this mineral before, despite all his years exploring the stars. “The devil if I know,” Boyce said. “Did I mention it was rare?” “A search of the ship’s computer libraries may yield the nearest source of the mineral,” Number One suggested from her post at the helm. A dark-haired Illyrian woman whose cool composure and formidable intelligence often reminded Spock of his own people, the Enterprise’s first officer turned her gaze toward the science station. “Mister Spock?” “The computer is processing the request,” said Spock, who had already initiated a search of that nature. A hard-copy printout issued from the computer terminal, and Spock swiftly scanned the document. “According to past surveys of this sector, ryetalyn can be found on Cypria III, an alien colony precisely 61.09 hours from our present location.” “Good work, Mister Spock,” the captain said. “So what do we know about this place?” Spock called up a full report on the planet, and was preparing to summarize it, but Number One spoke up first, rendering his efforts redundant. “Cypria III is a Class-M planet colonized by a humanoid species over a century ago, not long before its parent world abandoned its expansionist space program following a period of political and economic turmoil. The future Cyprians, in particular, emigrated in search of a younger and less developed world that was in a more natural state, as opposed to the heavily mechanized and industrialized culture that had overrun their homeworld. Although they maintain cultural ties to their planet of origin, the Cyprians have been largely independent for generations—and inclined to remain so. Their infrequent encounters with Starfleet have been peaceful to date, but they have expressed little interest in joining the Federation. Deeply attached to their adopted world and its rich natural bounty, they seldom venture beyond their own system and have no significant space force to speak of.” Pike regarded her with a bemused expression. “And you knew all that off the top of your head?” “I have an eidetic memory,” she reminded him. “And I endeavor to be informed on the regions of space through which we travel.” “Of course.” Pike cracked a rare smile. “I expect nothing less from you, Number One.” Spock was impressed as well. Not for the first time, he reflected that the first officer would fit in well on Vulcan, perhaps even better than he did. He felt a twinge of envy, laced with a certain bitterness, but dismissed the emotion as unworthy of his Vulcan heritage and training. He could not allow his human side to distract him from his duty. The ship needed him to be at his best. “Captain,” he said. “You should be aware that Cypria III is located near territory presently claimed by the Klingon Empire.” He called up a star map that appeared upon the main viewer at the front of the bridge. Dotted lines indicated areas of Klingon influence, while an illuminated yellow circle represented the Cyprian star system. “The precise borders are disputed, but, as you can see, Cypria III is less than a light-year beyond the edge of the contested region.” “Terrific,” Pike muttered with what Spock recognized as sarcasm. “And what are the Cyprians’ relations with the Klingons like?” “Frosty,” Number One said. “As noted before, the Cyprians value their independence. They are no more interested in becoming vassals of the Empire than they are in joining the Federation, although their uncomfortable proximity to the Klingons may be another reason they’ve kept the Federation at arm’s length to date. Joining the Federation might be seen as a provocative act by their Klingon neighbors. Better for all concerned, perhaps, if Cypria maintains its neutrality where the Klingons and the Federation are concerned.” “A logical policy,” Spock observed, appreciating the colony’s position. “Positioned between two superpowers, Cypria is well-advised not to take sides.” Although the Klingons had yet to start a war with the Federation, as the Romulans had done nearly a century ago, relations between Starfleet and the Klingons had been growing steadily more confrontational over the last several years, as both parties expanded outward across the galaxy and extended their realms of influence. The Klingons, in particular, tended to be very territorial when it came to vast swaths of space. There were those who said that war was inevitable, perhaps in less than a decade, although Pike wanted to think that peace was always a possibility. “Well,” Pike said, “let’s hope that neutrality doesn’t extend to denying us assistance during a medical emergency, and that the Klingons feel the same way.” The map on the screen gave way to a view of the stars ahead. “Mister Tyler, set a course for Cypria III, but let’s stay well clear of that blurry border.” “Aye, sir,” the navigator said. “Speed, Captain?” Number One asked from the helm. Pike glanced at Boyce, whose grim countenance conveyed a definite sense of urgency. “Engage hyperdrive,” the captain said. “Warp factor seven.” “Yes, sir.” She peered into the gooseneck viewer at her station and waved her hand over the helm controls, which responded to her precise gestures. “Warp factor seven.” The Enterprise’s powerful warp engines activated, distorting space-time to propel the ship far beyond the speed of light. Within moments, they had left the unexplored solar system far behind and were hurling through deep space toward the Cyprian system. Spock’s keen ears heard a crewman coughing hoarsely over by the engineering station. Glancing across the bridge, he saw that Ensign Hawass looked pale and feverish. The man’s hands trembled as they passed over his control panel. His breathing was labored. Alert to the crewman’s distress, Pike swiftly relieved Hawass from duty and ordered him to sickbay, but it was clear that quarantine measures had indeed proved ineffective. The fever was at loose aboard the Enterprise, and not even the bridge was safe. Pike frowned as he watched Hawass exit via the turbolift. “What was that you were saying about barn doors, Doctor?” “You asked to see me, Captain?” Spock entered the briefing room to find Captain Pike reviewing a stack of status reports on the ship’s systems. Pike’s preference for hard-copy documents was a personal eccentricity the crew had come to indulge, despite the fact that printed reports were clearly destined for obsolescence. Spock did not fault the captain for this singular predilection; in the four years that he had served under Pike, he had never observed the captain’s fondness for print to have any impact on his judgment or leadership abilities. Pike’s command was exemplary. “That’s right, Mister Spock.” Pike looked up from his papers and gestured toward an empty chair. “Make yourself comfortable.” Spock took a seat at the conference table. The viewscreen at the end of table currently displayed images of the colony on Cypria III from past Starfleet expeditions to the planet. A large urban metropolis indicated an advanced and thriving civilization, with technology comparable to the Federation’s. Skyscrapers and maglev train tracks denoted both prosperity and progress. Lush greenery testified to the planet’s flourishing ecosystem. Spock found it unsurprising that most Cyprians saw little need to leave their world, which appeared generously well-suited to humanoid life. “Does this concern the present medical emergency?” he asked. “I’ve taken the liberty of familiarizing myself with—” “I’m sure you have,” Pike interrupted, “but hold that thought. We’re still nearly a day away from Cypria III, so I wanted to take advantage of this lull to discuss another matter with you.” Spock had reported to the briefing room directly from the bridge, where Number One was presently in command. He wondered what this was about. “You have my full attention, sir.” “I would be stunned to hear otherwise,” Pike said, sounding amused for reasons Spock couldn’t quite isolate. The human sense of humor often resisted easy analysis. “You’re familiar with the U.S.S. Intrepid, of course.” “Naturally,” Spock replied. The Intrepid was a Constitution-class starship manned by an all-Vulcan crew. It was felt by most Vulcans that a homogenous crew was the most logical choice, promoting greater efficiency and cohesion. A crew sharing the same background, culture, environmental preferences, and, of course, a commitment to logic above all else was bound to function better as a unit—or so the theory went. Granted, it could be argued that such homogeneity ran counter to the ancient principle of IDIC, which exalted infinite diversity in infinite combinations, but most Vulcans felt that holding fast to their own time-honored customs and traditions in no way excluded respecting the ways of other species and civilizations. Vulcans had never sought to impose their own logic on others, no matter how rigorously Vulcans themselves were expected to adhere to the teachings of Surak, and regardless of how manifestly obvious it was that the Vulcan way was preferable. If there was an inherent contradiction between prizing homogeneity and diversity, it was one that most Vulcans managed to reconcile without too much effort. But Spock was not like most Vulcans. “A position as first officer has opened up aboard the Intrepid,” Pike disclosed. “I’d be sorry to lose you, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t inform you of this opportunity. It would mean a promotion for you, as well as opportunity to be among your own people.” He chuckled softly. “I can’t imagine it’s always easy for you, rubbing shoulders with us shamelessly emotional humans day after day.” It can be challenging, Spock admitted to himself. He thought back to that earlier moment on the bridge when he’d held his tongue regarding the distance to Cypria III to avoid bruising Lieutenant Tyler’s ego and feelings. Accommodating and making allowances for his crewmates’ volatile emotions and frequent lapses of logic had become a routine part of his daily existence, like the constant pull of a heavy-gravity planet that one gradually learns to live with, despite the perpetual strain on one’s system. It might be a relief, in that respect, to dwell among Vulcans again. He would no longer have a constant barrage of emotional displays chipping away at his own hard-won self-control. He could just be Spock, one Vulcan among many, and not the Vulcan aboard the ship. Then again, there were reasons that he had left Vulcan and joined Starfleet in the first place . . . “I hope that I have not given you any reason to believe that I am dissatisfied with my posting aboard the Enterprise,” Spock said. “Or with my fellow crew members.” “Not at all,” Pike assured him. “I’m only thinking of your own best interests here. You deserve to know what your options are.” “Thank you, Captain.” Spock found himself oddly conflicted by this unexpected turn of events. Usually when faced with a choice, he could readily determine the logical course of action, but at this moment he truly did not know what to think. At present he was third in command aboard the Enterprise, after the captain and Number One; strictly from the standpoint of career advancement, the decision was obvious. Nor did he have any doubts about his ability to fulfill the duties of first officer. He deemed himself both ready and able to take on a position of greater responsibility and authority. Advancing to first officer aboard another Constitution-class starship was the next logical step. And yet . . . “You will always be a child of two worlds,” his mother had once said. The words came back to him now as he contemplated the choice before him. What was preferable: to be the only Vulcan among a crew of humans, or the only half-human aboard a ship of Vulcans? “With your permission, sir, I think it best to meditate on the matter rather than make a hasty decision. May I give you my answer shortly, perhaps after the present crisis has been resolved?” This was a logical approach, so why did it feel like he was stalling? “By all means, Mister Spock. Take your time. I suspect we’re going to have our hands full soon enough.” He looked Spock squarely in the eye. “Just know that you have my full support whatever you decide, and you can count on a glowing recommendation should you choose to apply for the post aboard the Intrepid.” “Again, my thanks, Captain.” “You’re welcome, Lieutenant.” He sifted through the reports before him. “Let’s talk again later . . . assuming any of us survive this damn fever, that is.” The control console on the table chimed urgently, signaling a transmission from the bridge. Spock routed the signal to the viewscreen, where Number One’s image promptly appeared. The familiar steel-gray confines of the bridge could be spied in the background. “Pike here,” the captain said crisply. “What is it, Number One?” “A complication, sir. We’ve received what appears to be a distress signal . . . from Klingon space.” Spock raised an eyebrow. Calling such news a complication was an understatement, to say the least. Pike rose immediately to his feet, worry written on his face. “We’re on our way, Number One. Pike out.” Spock hurried after the captain.

Greg Cox did not dissapoint. I loved the episode "The Menagerie,"& "The Cage" so it was great fun to see Capt Pike, Number One, Dr. Boyce & a young Spock back in action. I'm not gonna give anything away but the plot revolves around a young woman that was kidnapped by Klingons when she was 7 & now 10 yrs later her older sister has found her & kidnaps her back because she has been adopted by a Klingon captain & has since fully embraced Klingon lifestyle. The Enterprise & crew get caught up in the affair by answering the older sister's distress call while attempting to escape Klingon space with the adopted father/Klingon warship commander hot on their heels. The Enterprise rescues the sisters & the story takes off from there & while all this is going on the crew is battling an outbreak of Rigelion fever & they're only hope for a cure is found in a rare mineral that can be found on the sisters home planet. But the planet's natives are reluctant to give the cure to the crew until the long lost little girl is returned home, but things have become messy in that regard because she whole heartedly wants to return to the empire, & wants no part of her former family or way of life. Pike believes Spock may be the key to breaking through the girl's tough exterior since Spock is also a child of two worlds & might have some common ground. The novel has some great character moments for Spock, & some fun action with the Klingons,....highly recommend.

He knows the characters, situations, and their histories and writes about them with authority. While he always does a great job with Captain Kirk & Co., he has outdone himself this time, using characters who were only seen in the original pilot "The Cage" and later (with the same footage) in "The Menagerie." In lieu of Captain Kirk, we see the no-nonsense Christopher Pike in charge of the Enterprise in this installment. A very young Mr. Spock takes a leading role in the story, long before became first officer and met his friend and Captain, James T. Kirk. The story is a race against time, as many crew members have been infected with a terrible illness and only have so long to get the mineral needed to treat it (the same mineral seen in an episode of the TV series). Complicating matters is a matter of kidnapping and political intrigue between the Klingons and The Cyprians (a race whose planet is found in territory near Klingon space). There is a lot of action, both aboard the ship and on the Cyprian planet, along with Spock grappling his thoughts of what it means to be both Vulcan and human. My only small gripe about this book was the handling of the mysterious "Number One," who was also seen in "The Cage" and "The Menagerie." While her origins and motivations have never been fully explored, she seemed a little too emotional and friendly in this book. I preferred her more as the stoic and emotionless character we saw on TV.This is easily the best Star Trek novel of 2015.

By Michael Harkins Greg Cox's CHILD OF TWO WORLDS is thoroughly entertaining and a thrilling opportunity to engage with the Pike-era STAR TREK that might have been. As with all great ST stories, the novel is replete with great character moments that are, at turns, familiar and revelatory. The book is well-paced and the plot---summarized quite well in a previous review---moves effortlessly and convincingly between the scenes of conflict within family (and within one's self) and the exceedingly-well choreographed action sequences. All that said, CHILD OF BOTH WORLDS satisfies on every level and I cannot recommend it highly enough...

A fun, flirty story that makes you want to discover what London has to offer.New Year at the RitzA story of new beginnings and letting go, as the old year gives way to the new. ‘New Year at the Ritz’, features a glamorous scavenger hunt, with elements of ‘Pretty Woman’; full of glitz but with a lovely romantic ending.Valentine’s at Primrose HillAn unusual Valentine’s Day story, this romantic tale, pairs a victim of a tragic accident and a well meaning workaholic, brought together by a boisterous puppy. Poignancy and hope underline this story, which is delightful change from the usual hearts and flowers of Valentine’s Day.Cocktails in ChelseaThe first few lines of this story capture most people's perception of the young set in Chelsea; the wealth, designer lifestyle and the 'plum in the mouth', speech affectation. Whether this is really true of Chelsea's residents is incidental. It's the popular belief about life in this privileged borough of London. 'Cocktails in Chelsea' puts the reader at the heart of it.Sofia's character is easy to recognise and empathise with. She is the 'girl next door' and appears ordinary at first glance. She has hidden depths, which make her worthwhile getting to know. Sofia's self-effacing sense of humour and outlook on life is refreshing. The chemistry between Sofia and Nathan is well written and their story realistic, given their close proximity and the fact they are both so different from the Chelsea set. This story is a compendium of emotions; jealousy, snobbery, misunderstanding, passion and hope. 'Cocktails in Chelsea makes a delightful read; something to brighten up the daily commute or let you escape to somewhere glamorous and romantic for your lunch break.Strawberries at WimbledonGame Set and Match to a lovely romantic story full of sensuality, poignancy and humour. Wimbledon’s unique atmosphere and competitive spirit provides an iconic setting for a reunion romance between Rayne and Adam. Opposites certainly attract in this love story. Both characters are from different backgrounds but they share emotional baggage from their childhood and their university days that makes an unexpected meeting full of angst and passion.Rayne is a strong character who has built on her unique upbringing and used it to achieve the career she wants. Adam is a perfect match for the dedicated journalist but the history between them and words previously left unsaid threaten any future they may have. I loved Lily's take on their relationship and her interactions with both characters she is a wonderful source of humour and commonsense in this story. This short story flowed like a novel and the ending was believable. A lovely summer read.Picnics in Hyde Park'Picnics in Hyde Park', the final story in the 'Love London' series, is the longest and encompasses all that is good in the first five novellas. With more angst, humour, poignancy, romance and sensuality; this is the perfect ending to the chic, contemporary series.Zoe is likeable; from the moment she appears, hammering on Matt's doors to avenge her little sister. Her actions say so much; she is fearless, opinionated, loyal and more than a little guilt ridden, after her five year sojourn in New York but I connected with her immediately.Matt is delectable, although he does hide it well, under his brusque and detached manner. Like Zoe, he is dependable and full of remorse for past actions. In many ways they are emotionally similar.Emotionally invested in Matt and his children, Zoe is 'caught between the devil and the deep blue sea'. The chemistry between Matt and Zoe has a forbidden thrill, which makes the outcome inevitable and sizzling hot. This story is more than the romance between Zoe and Matt. There is her nurturing of the forgotten children and her complicated relationship with her Aunt to explore. Reunited with old friends provides the readers with pertinent insights into what makes Zoe tick. Finally there are 'Picnics in Hyde Park', the importance of which, I will let you discover for yourselves.I received a copy of this book from Harper Impulse via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Light uplifting CLEAN storyu By lep I received a complimentary book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.I had never read anything from Harlequin’s Medical Romance Series before, so I was looking forward to a new experience. Once I started reading, I realized that this is a British series written by British authors that take place in Great Britain. In spite of that, this book reminds me of the Harlequin Romance Series. It is short, with no sex or violence and includes a love between two characters who are good people who just encounter a misunderstanding that keeps them apart. This is the story of Bonnie Reid, her little daughter Freya and Jacob Layton. Bonnie is a Scottish midwife who walked in on her husband with her best friend. Therefore she left Scotland to move to England. Jacob is an obstetrician and also happens to be Bonnie’s boss.Bonnie and Freya move into a room in Jacob’s house until they can find someplace decent to buy or rent. However, Jacob has intimacy issues. Added to that problem is the fact that he has just finished cancer treatment and is not sure about the results yet (not a spoiler since it says it in the front blurb).I enjoyed this book because it was nice to watch Jacob slowly fall in love with Bonnie and Freya. Also, this is a quick book that is good if you only have a short time to read or if you have just finished a long, dark, thought-provoking suspense book or novel. It is the kind of book I pick up when I need to read something light and happy. As an added surprise, I learned a lot about the hospital set up in England for delivering babies.I would recommend this book to people who like Harlequin Romances because it seems to follow that pattern. Also, for people who like medical books about doctors and nurses this seems to be a wonderful choice. Alert: some of the words are in their English form. There was only one word I couldn’t figure out, but I was able to look it up.

By Books And Spoons Blog I loved the energy of this story, from the hassle of the ward, to the quietness of their home, to the magic of Christmas time seen by the eyes of a child. I loved it.The maternity ward daily life, the emergency calls they get, the joy of healthy babies, it all brought a huge smile on my face, just adding into the Christmas spirit of the tale.As was the mother with a child, and no place to live. How easily they made a family unit, the adorable connection Jacob formed with Freya, how he went out of his way to include her in with him and Bonnie. The unusual way Jacob and Bonnie's friendship is formed, just underlines what a good man he is, and how caring and giving his soul is.Both Bonnie and Jacob are struggling with issues of the past, Jacob is recovering from cancer, a cancer he watched his mother die from.Bonnie left Scotland behind her, to build a new life of Freya and herself, after the betrayal of her husband and a close friend. With Jacob's secrets and Bonnie's tough time with trust and hiding things from each other, the relationship they are forming, is about to get rocky. With the serious issues the characters are facing, their development, their acceptance of the reality, and learning to hope again, learning to trust and love, is shown so clearly and beautifully. I loved this story, the meaningful passage, the Christmas spirit, and the loyalty, love, and joy the characters found within each other. A perfect, lovely Christmas tale, indeed~ Five Spoons

Can a family heal him? Will he turn back into the crabbit?Midwife Bonnie Reid had to leave her hometown behind. She took her daughter Freya to a new place to start over. She got in late the night before, she had to get Freya situated in the new school, she had to catch the bus and she had to stop in the hospitals office before getting to the obstetrics department. Yes she was late the first day at her new position and head obstetrician Jacob Layton was not happy.Family life was never good for Jacob, losing his mother at age 10 three days before Christmas and his dad then shipping him off to boarding school he did not know what good family life was like. But one thing he knew he wanted no part of Christmas. He gave Bonnie a ride to pick up Freya from child care and went to situate them at their hotel. When he carried the car seat into the hotel room he got the distinct smell of dampness and knew that Bonnie had said her daughter had asthma. They could not stay there. Jacob did the unthinkable, he invited Bonnie and Freya to come stay with him in his house till she could find more suitable housing.Little did he know what it would do for them? What would all transpire before the three of them?Scarlet Wilson wrote this book so that you could vision what Jacob’s home was like, what happened throughout the book. It is a book you will be glad you read it.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Chapter OneMaxum slammed the hand of the large, stinking man who had challenged him down on the table. The rowdy gathering of men cheered and jeered, some thumping Maxum hard on the back in congratulations for winning the arm wrestle. Someone slapped a mug of ale into his winning hand and the reveling men began to sing a victory song in his honor.Maxum moved away from the boisterous group and found a reasonably quiet corner of the inn, preparing to slowly enjoy the ale in his hand. He wasn’t as drunk as the other men in the room, but he was going to catch up with them. They had been celebrating since sunset but Maxum had only joined them an hour ago—two hours past juquil’s hour when he had finally clawed his way out of the ground. Once he had healed enough to walk he had come to the inn to join his men. They were a motley crew; five in all including himself. Each with their own special talents and each necessary for him to obtain his next talisman. He reached into the pocket of his pants and fondled the amulet they had retrieved just that afternoon—along with enough treasure to keep the men satisfied for quite some time. This talisman was said to have great power; it made the wearer invulnerable to attack. He had not tested that yet so he didn’t know if it was the truth. But a talisman like that would come in quite handy in a war with a god. For, as much as he was immortal, he was not invulnerable. He could be hurt and hurt badly. And there was that little bit about a god-made weapon taking off his head and ending it all right then and there. If there was one thing he could count on, it was that a god would have a god-made weapon in his hands. He didn’t take the amulet out, he didn’t put it on. He would test it tomorrow, and he didn’t want to flash it in front of the other patrons in the bar. He didn’t want to invite a thief to take it from him. To try anyway. A thief was more likely to lose his hand than succeed.Maxum took a swig of his drink and looked around the room. There were two women there. One was the barmaid and she was being kept quite occupied by the graspy hands of his men. There was Kyno, the big lumbering orc halfbreed with his shining bald head and large meaty hands that swung a spiked club like nobody’s business. There was Dru, a slightly shy, slim figured, fiery haired spirit mage who barely had twenty-five full turnings under his belt. There was Kilon, a slightly rotund archer whose arrows always hit their mark. And last but not least there was Doisy, a cleric, far more handsome than a religious man should be and with about just as much charm as could be fit into one person. He did not grab for the barmaid, instead preferring to tempt her with smiles and charm and wait for her to come to him. Smiles that were gaining him the fastest refills when it came to the ale in his cup. What Maxum found interesting, however, was that his men weren’t paying any attention to the other woman in the room at all. True, she was clearly a patron and should go about unaccosted, but for all she was wearing men’s leggings and a shirt and vest to hide her womanly curves, Maxum could see them all the same. She was a shapely thing, her close-fitting breeches leaving little mystery to the slender shape of her thighs and the cozy roundness of her ass. The vest hid her breasts for the most part so he couldn’t get a good feel for their size, but he suspected they were enough to fill a man’s hands. She was toying with a bowl of the hot stew the innkeeper was serving for dinner, nibbling at a piece of the questionable meat within it. She noticed Maxum’s regard of her and she returned it in kind, looking him up and down. He let her look and smiled at the interest he saw flickering in her eyes. And she had pretty eyes. A beautiful jade green to complement her silvery blond hair which she had plaited into two braids on either side of her head, covering her ears. He was disappointed by the style. He expected it was quite pretty when let loose. It would be straight, he surmised, like a silver-gold waterfall, reaching somewhere around her breasts. Those mysteriously hidden breasts. She sat back a little, picking up her mug and taking a thoughtful sip. Then she stood up, skirted the boisterous goings-on in the center of the room, and came to stand before Maxum. She was nearly a strap shorter than he was, slightly built—almost like a boy if not for those hips and . . . damn it, he wanted to see those breasts! But she had the face of a fairy, all fine bones and delicate points, right down to her small upturned nose with its gentle tip. She looked too genteel to be caught out in this kind of crowd in those kinds of clothes. She should be in a dress—with a corset that pushed up and showed off those breasts . . . wherever they were.“A quiet corner,” he said with a nod to the other side of the table. “Come and sit.”She regarded him for just a moment longer, but not because she was debating the wisdom of sitting with him. She had pretty much made up her mind to do that before she’d even gotten out of her seat. Still he didn’t know exactly what was going on behind those jade eyes. It was one of the reasons he was glad she had come over.“I didn’t take you for the quiet corner type,” she said as she slid into her seat and put her mug down on the table.“I prefer quiet corners. My men have other ideas.”“You’re celebrating?”“Is it that obvious?” he said with a grin he knew was charming. His brothers had always said the gods had gifted him with charm, good looks, and a good singing voice—all great ways to woo the ladies. And they were right. He’d caught more than his fair share with that smile. She smiled back and relaxed in her chair. “A little bit. They’re throwing coin around like they could make it for themselves. They should be careful. It might attract the wrong element.”Maxum chuckled richly. “We are the wrong element,” he said. She laughed. It was a light, pretty sound but not a delicate little titter like the highborn ladies used. It was a laugh. A good, feminine laugh that made you smile to hear it. Maxum liked her more the more he discovered about her.“What’s your name?”“Airianne,” she said. “But you can call me Airi.”“A light, breezy sort of name,” he noted. She grimaced. “Oh, now you’re being unoriginal. I may have to rethink this whole situation.”“Ah. Well, forgive me. I’ll try to be more unique from here on out.”Maxum found that ironic actually. He was as unique as they came. It was simply a matter of not wanting everyone to know about what set him apart from everyone else on the Black Continent. She made a show of thinking about it, but then she shrugged. “I’ll give you another chance if you tell me your name.”“Wouldn’t that ruin the mystery of it all?”“I rather doubt there would be much mystery if I have to call you ‘You there!’ the entire length of our short acquaintance.”“Our acquaintance will be short?” he asked with an arched brow.“Oh yes. If all it is based on is the mystery of your name then it will have to be short indeed. The moment I learn it, all would be over.”“Hey, Maxum! Come roll at dice!” Doisy shouted at him from across the room.Airi laughed. “There you see? No more mystery, nothing to compel me to stay.”“I’m sure I have other mysteries about me,” he coaxed her with a lopsided grin.“Do you? Do you think I would find them interesting?”“I know you would. I promise I won’t tell you a thing about me. You can discover the answer to all your questions on your own, thereby entertaining yourself for quite a long while.”“But I already know so much about you,” she said.“Such as?”“I know your name.” She winked at him. “And I know you do not like to be called Max.”“How do you know that?”“Your man is so drunk he would have called you by the most familiar name he uses to address you. Since he called you Maxum and not Max I can assume he has been trained very, very well not to do it . . . so well he remembers even when in his cups.”“What else do you know?” he asked, leaning back and relaxing as he let his eyes roam over her again and again.“Let’s see . . . you are a mercenary.”“How can you be so sure?” he asked, surprise tightening him up.“You are well outfitted. You have spent a good amount of coin on your armor and that sword you carry. That blade was not made in any ordinary forge, I’ll bet my life on it.”She was right. The sword was his brother’s. A god-made weapon and a gift from Weysa. Dethan had gifted him with it when he had told them he was leaving to “seek out his own life.” He hadn’t told them his plans or his ultimate goal. But having a god-made weapon would be crucial when fighting a god. It was a fair bet that no ordinary weapon could inflict injury otherwise.“But being well outfitted does not a mercenary make,” he pointed out.“Ah . . . but here your friends give you away. A mage, an orc, an archer, and a religious man make for a pretty well-rounded group of skills. All quite marketable if someone is looking for a hired hand to help with this little or that problem.” She tilted her head thoughtfully. “But you do not make all of your coin by being a sellsword, and I think selling your sword is just a means to an end. You have different goals in mind.”“Now you can’t possibly know that from sitting across the room,” he said, shifting uncomfortably in his chair. Her insights were uncanny. A little too uncanny. He was beginning to suspect she was some kind of mage like Dru. A spirit mage could tell a lot about a person if the right powers were used.“I know that from speaking with you. You are clearly an intelligent man. You don’t throw yourself into revelry with abandon like your men do, you keep yourself separate from their behavior. That tells me a great deal about what kind of man you are.”“It is an off night. Tomorrow I will get just as drunk as they are.”“I think not. No sense trying to mislead me,” she said with a smile. “Just because I can see you doesn’t mean you must try to hide.”

In the conclusion to The Immortal Brothers series, Jacquelyn Frank creates a fascinating world in her final novel, Bound in Dark By TSRBR Overall Rating: 4.5 Rockin’ ★★★★☆In the conclusion to The Immortal Brothers series, Jacquelyn Frank creates a fascinating world in her final novel, Bound In Darkness. This is Maxum’s story of his attempts to find a way to break the curse placed on him when he and his three brothers enter Olympus to drink from the fountain of eternal life and gain immortality. Ms. Frank’s has a way of creating characters that sizzle as they move through the pages of her novels. Although each book in this series followed the brothers as they try to find release and peace, they are totally unique in the approach used to find resolution to their plight. Read and enjoy Airianne and Maxum’s journey to find the end to the brother’s quest!Eternal suffering from being buried underground is the price Maxum pays nightly for his part in pursuing immortality. He has finally found a way to break the vicious cycle of entombment and resurrection. With his followers he is on the trail of the talismans that will allow him to not only kill the god that cursed him but also free him from the soul destroying cycle. After rising and healing from his excruciating burial, he meets a woman that intrigues him, Airianne. But this woman is more than she seems to be, can she help him finally free himself from his curse? Or will she be the cause of his continued eternal damnation? She is a thief! Or is she?Ms. Franks is a remarkably talent writer. Her words paint pictures in the readers mind to the point that they feel they are inside the story. The way she creates and unfolds her storyline is extraordinary and keeps the reader so involved that they cannot put the book down until it is finished. Her books sizzle with sexual tension and action packed drama. This is a MUST read and addition to anyone’s paranormal library.

By Karli Jacqueline Frank is one of my long time favorite authors. I very much enjoyed the previous books in this series and looked forward to this final installment of the series. I had a difficult time with the first half plus of this book, however, primarily because I didn't like Airianne, or "Airi" She is variously described as oppositional, defensive, quick tempered, confrontational and annoying. The negative aspects of her personality for me were overplayed and tiresome. Additionally, the story evolves slowly, but thankfully, in the second half of the book, we get to see a different side of her, a softer side, and learn why she is so defensive. We also learn more about Maxum and the pace quickens and suspense builds as he nears the end of his quest.Maxum is the fourth and final brother who was cursed by the gods to be released from full time torture. His amended punishment is to be crushed by soil and rocks deep within the earth each night only from dark till the juquil hour. The story begins two years after he leaves his brothers to go on a quest to end the torment he endures each night by gathering artifacts that he believes will help him defeat Sabo, God of Pain and Suffering, the god who will never release him from his punishment. He leads a group of men who help him in his quest: Doisy, an irreverent cleric and healer; Dru, a shy spirit mage; Kyno, a protective, lumbering half orc; and Kilon, a mean misogynist, but a skilled archer. Airi enters the picture when she picks Maxum's pocket, stealing an artifact he recently acquired. She escapes, but Maxum intercepts her the next day and rather than turn her over to the authorities, they strike a bargain. She can travel with him in return for certain services. Airi is left with no choice but to join him, but questions and opposes everything. She has convinced Maxum that a thief could be a helpful addition to his group and proves her worth on their next venture--to everyone but the deadly Kilon, who hates everything about her and has dark secrets of his own.Copy received in return for an honest review

It clearly showcases everything I like about her writing. This is Jacquelyn Frank at her best. There is the overarching theme running through all four of the brother’s stories along with a more compelling personal storyline for Maxum. He is the last of the brothers to gain some form of relief from his torture. Then there is a well-structured main plot with counterplot that includes a final a clash of the gods, suspense, betrayal, and a thief that steals a valiant warrior’s heart.Bound in Darkness is a fantasy fiction story to savor and relish. One last thought, while all four brothers were curse at the same time, this can be a stand-alone read. Still I am very glad that I read all four in order of the way they won their freedom.Copy provided by the publisher through Net Galley for an honest review.

At a nightclub called Temptations, Kaden, the Saak’da or future ruler of a race living on Earth secretly for generations, is trying to stop a massacre from happening. He’s had a tip that a small disgruntled faction of his people plan an attack that night that will result in a great loss of human life. Kaden is focused, disciplined, and determined to protect the humans who are ignorant to his people’s presence. But when he prevents a tragic accident from happening, one that would have been fatal to the little bus-boy, Matty, he sets a powerful force into motion. Kaden broke the rules about not interfering in human lives because one touch from Matty convinced him that Matty was his fated blood-angel, and that the bond between them would last for the rest of his very long life. Matty can’t believe his good fortune when a sex-god like Kaden D’Marco wants to take him home. Matty is just a nobody, abandoned and abused as a child, bullied and picked on by his boss at the club. He washes dirty glasses for a living, and he’s never attracted the attention of a man like Kaden. Kaden has waited a long time for his fated one, but can a man who feeds on human blood find happiness someone who faints at the sight of it? Can he convince this scared young man to trade a taste of his blood for a love that will last a thousand years and bring him happiness and gifts that he can’t even imagine?

There is no better feeling when you open a new book (especially when it’s a start to a new series like this one) and you know, within reading the first page, that you are going to love it – that was exactly how I felt!I was drawn immediately into the new and mysterious world of the Saak’da, or for us mere human readers, The Guardians of the Five Rubies. They came a long, long time ago when their own planet ceased to exist and set up home, very secretly, here on Earth. Earth provided the tool they needed to survive…..blood!The book is a romantic paranormal readers dream, it has everything you crave and more – sexy vampires, evil twin brother (or is he? my jury is still out on that one), a dying ruler, a purist uncle (a definite candidate for being the truly evil one) and wait for it……..a mpreg!!!As I said, a readers dream book.Vampires are born, not made, if they are lucky enough, they hear the “Blood Song”, the blood of their Ruask’aa (mate), it hums in their veins and calls to the vampire. Once mated, only the blood of their Ruask’aa can sustain them, no other blood will do. The Blood Song for the vampire is instantaneous love, but not for the human….love takes time! And this brings me nicely to hot-pink-bikini-wearing-panties Matty! 5’4”of pure awesomeness – I loved him! The authors did well with his character, very well. He bought not only his awesomeness to the storyline but also humour, it was great to see the two authors showing off their skills by introducing the light humour scattered throughout the book.“He’d just had sex with James Bond”being one of my favourite Matty thoughts and there were so many more.So many questions left unanswered, so much potential for future books and character development and what’s with Matty’s sister? something isn’t quite right there? and I can’t wait to read more – well done authors, a magnificent start to what’s going to be a phenomenal series!Five glittering ruby red stars from me, or should that be five hot pink bikini panties stars? ****I would like to thank the authors for the privilege and opportunity of reviewing this ARC. My review is an honest opinion of the book****Threebooksovertherainbow.wordpress.com

This writing duo is unstoppable when they get together!Kaden can't believe he found his ruask’aa, his beloved, but it could have been at a better time. When he was trying to head off an attack he meets Matty and in order to save him from grave injury, Kaden chooses to break the code and rescue him.Matty has had a little much to handle in the last few days, he has been asked to believe things that just couldn't be real, could they? He can't deny he is drawn to Kaden, but what Kaden tells him s just to off the wall to be true right?Matty may have no choice but to trust in Kaden when what he thought could never happen does, and he becomes a target! Can these two make a life together? Can they make it out alive to even try?I love this book because this couple is hot, and the storyline is off the charts!! I find a book much more interesting when there is chemistry in the story, and this book has chemistry in spades!Make sure you check out Temptation, and like me you will be so excited to read the rest of the series! Thanks Victoria and Shannon, for a take on Vampires that is truly genius! I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

He's a hard worker even if he isn't valued. He's struggling to make ends meet. In walks Kaden, sweeps Matty off his feet, and into a new life.Kaden is descended from a race from another world, similar to vampires. His people are few and there's the usual inner rebellion amongst their numbers and what they want out of life. Kaden is the Guardian of his race, a position I assumed he inherited from his father . . . But as his father is still living. This is a significant leadership position which involves protecting artifacts . . .Something he hasn't taken over yet. .. and is extra fertile. That's all that was explained and there may be more attributes. Kaden is honorable, rich, and a loyal son. There was a slow build relationship between the two guys and it involved a lot of patience and trust. The characters were interesting and well fleshed out, the situations were stereotypical of a paranormal gay romance with mpreg. Still it was fun and held my interest.SPOILER:My main complaint lies with the epilogue. The story ends where Matty is . . . in pain. . . . stomach pain. . . . and he knows he's 'losing it'. So. Turn the page and the epilogue starts. Kaden is pacing the maternity ward and I thought Matty was taken to the hospital because he was losing his baby. Kaden is talking to his brother is upset, and then Matty walks out with a bundle. I had to stop and re-read that all over again. Yup. Matty is fine, no idea how much time has gone by when the epilogue starts, but Matty is walking out of the maternity ward with a baby. Then this line comes and throws me off more:"Look Uncle Kaden. Come and meet your new niece," Kaden said in a whisper. Then I figured out this wasn't Matty's baby but his sister Ruth's -- And Matty was able to walk out with a newborn, something hospitals just don't do. . . . Eventually we hear about Matty's pregnancy and how he survived. The flow wasn't as good as the rest of the book and that was lousy timing for a misplaced name. Other than that I enjoyed this story and look forward to seeing where this series goes. - Dan's Wife

This book contains four very short (1500 words each) vignettes written from the perspective of characters other than Polly Giller. In the first, Kayla, Andrew and Rebecca are facing seventh grade and all that comes with growing up and heading for junior high. The first quandary? A dance. In Vignette #2, Eliseo helps Jason come to grips with a major decision he has to make before school starts. The third vignette is just a few moments in Beryl's life. If you were a world-famous artist would you choose to live in small town Iowa? Her answer is obvious. Vignette #4 shows the beginning of a day from Eliseo's perspective. He loves his animals and has a great time with the kids who come into his life. The Bellingwood books are written from Polly's perspective and every once in a while it's fun to look at what's happening behind the scenes from the viewpoint of other characters. These vignettes were originally published on the nammynools.com website and in the monthly email newsletter to Bellingwood readers.
