In this fifth book in the ‘Worlds Apart’ Series, British Navy Captain Neville Burton’s life takes a strange twist. It was 1806, and Napoleon Bonaparte’s ambitions of conquering the known world were well under way; he’d stopped the Russians and destroyed the Austrian Empire. He did not expect help from a lone man who was seeking to bring him an important hostage. At sea, Britain’s ‘Atlantic Campaign’ was unfolding to stop Napoleon’s attempts at conquering the oceans. Their wide-spread nets didn’t catch all enemy ships however, so the French Fleets under Admiral Linois in the Pacific and Admiral Willaumez in the Caribbean were doing considerable damage. Burton’s plans to wed Jamaican rum heiress Marion Stillwater go on hold when he is ordered to join his frigate La Desiree with British Admiral Warren’s efforts to stop the French. The aftermath of a consequential battle leaves him in London waiting for further orders, while his fiancée takes the opportunity of his absence to establish a Stillwater Rum warehouse in Baltimore. Commanding a Royal Navy ship in the Napoleonic War is not Burton’s only source of peril, however. The timing of his visit to England coincides with the abduction of a dear friend. Although first being suspected of the deed, Whitehall overturns their initial distrust and assigns him the task of recovering the hostage. Burton calls on several past acquaintances to engage in a plan to thwart the kidnapper, stealing into France and acting more like a secret agent than a navy captain. Once in, they must still manage to get out of the enemy country, which again calls for his naval skills. Escaping aboard a small French coastal ship poses new problems. Is fomenting a mutiny the only strategy available to cross the English channel? Will he re-unite with his lover and fiancée, Marion Stillwater? Do the games of intrigue save the hostage? Richness of detail concerning the sailing of square-rigged ships into war, accuracy of the historical situation, and exposition from the author’s personal experience at sea should appeal to followers of Patrick O-Brian's Aubrey-Maturin Series or C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower. Naval Historical Fiction – early 19th Century

It is a combination of a traditional Age of Sail historical fiction and a spy novel. It has several interesting, well developed characters. The author succeeds in building an air of tension and excitement, especially in the later parts. Of course, part of that was because I kept expecting the incongruous "sci-fi" aspect of the series to suddenly kick in again (I won't tell you if it did or not). It had a satisfying ending that sets us up for the next book in the series. The author's writing has definitely improved since the start of the series, and I look forward to his next offering.

As far as tall ship fiction goes, Carrack does a very good job with the story telling. There was a little too much dedication on political intrigue this time around and I feel that from time to time he rushes through the ship to ship engagements, which are often the best parts of these books. That said, he does a very good job with character development - I've enjoyed Burton's development throughout the series. I look forward to the installment.

The plot holds your interest and I think it was well written. Enough action, adventure and sex to grab your interest. Really need to read the other 4 books first to get the complete story. Not a good standalone book.

Physicist Kate Lewis is shocked when the man she left behind travels one thousand miles to crash the physics department’s holiday party and ask for a second chance. Kate doesn’t do long-distance relationships. But she does do Ian. Multiple times. Small problem—she has a boyfriend. Too bad love isn’t a science. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ EXCERPT “What’s your rating for all the women you slept with?” Kate asked casually. Ian’s brown eyes twinkled with amusement. “You get a ten, even the first time.” “Oh!” She tittered. “A ten! I—you flatter me.” She giggled in a very uncharacteristic way and smoothed her hair. “I was so inexperienced. I didn’t even know what I was doing.” “You were open and honest, and you let me do whatever I wanted.” His fingers slid into her hair, cradling her head with one large hand. Her breath caught, but she couldn’t seem to move away. “And I realized sex is only special with the right person. Kate, you’re that right person for me.” “Ian,” she said nervously, “I-I don’t know why you’d say that. I was a dopey desperate virgin. And that last time I was drunk.” “No, you were tipsy from one beer.” His mouth grazed her earlobe as he spoke in a low, husky voice. “And the virgin thing, well, it was a privilege to be your first.” She shivered. “Oh.” He pulled back, his eyes hot on hers. “I’m going to kiss you now.” “In my office?” she asked inanely. “In your office,” he confirmed. “Why?” she asked softly in a voice that sounded like an invitation even to her ears. This was a very bad idea. But his hand was so warm and large and strong, tipping her head back in delicious anticipation. And he smelled so good. “Wrong question.” His gaze dropped to her mouth. “Ask how long I’ll be kissing you.” “Ian,” she breathed. His arm wrapped around her waist and with a quick tug made her tip into him. “Until you agree to let me give you a ten.” She melted against the heat and strength of his body, but even so, a voice in her head was shouting at her to protest. There was a small problem with this line of experimentation. “Ian—” She was cut off when his lips met hers, hot and demanding, and that electrifying chemistry that always happened when he kissed her shot straight through her body, making her mind shut down, a blissful break from its usual constant cranking. Only Ian could make her forget the world and lose herself in the moment. She clutched his sweater as he palmed her ass and pulled her up on tiptoe, pressed against his long, lean body. The kiss went on and on, and she just let go, lost in the feel of his mouth claiming hers, his taste, his scent. Nothing mattered except this heat that consumed her, made her ache and remember what they had together. He lifted his head just as she attempted to climb his body, one leg lifted and wrapped around his. He gazed into her eyes with a warm smile. “Let’s go.” She set her leg down and released her hold on his sweater, smoothing it back in place. And then she was forced to admit a very unfortunate fact that just proved her theory that their timing would never be right. “I have a boyfriend.” AUTHOR’S NOTE: Each book in the Clover Park STUDS series can be read as a stand-alone novel, except for Ian & Kate, who are much more fun to read in order. Ian & Kate first appear in Almost in Love, have a Happy-For-Now experience in Almost Romance, and find their Happy-Ever-After in Almost Hitched. No cliffhangers! Each story has a satisfying tender ending. The Clover Park STUDS Series Book 1: Almost in Love Book 2: Almost Married Book 3: Almost Over It Book 4: Almost Romance Book 5: Almost Hitched And don't miss the Clover Park series! Characters from each series pop up in different stories! Book 1: The Opposite of Wild Book 2: Daisy Does It All Book 3: Bad Taste in Men Book 4: Kissing Santa Book 5: Restless Harmony Book 6: Not My Romeo Book 7: Rev Me Up Book 8: An Ambitious Engagement Book 9: Clutch Player Book 10: A Tempting Friendship

When I first read about Kate and Ian back in book one of the Stud series (Almost In Love) I just knew I’d be seeing them again. It’s four years later and Ian is ready to take their relationship to the next level. Kate, however, is hurtling full speed ahead on the career track and won’t let anything derail her from her goals. Much as she’d love to spend more time with the ultra-hot Ian, he’s just too much of a distraction. In this prequel to their main story, the author creates a delightful romance filled with realistic characters and scenarios. Kate is representative of every woman who longs to have it all – a top-notch career and a loving family life. Ian has no intentions of derailing her career, but he, like most men, wants a bigger piece of her attention.Set in snowy Chicago around the holidays, Almost Romance is a quick and terrific read to kick off your holiday season. And I, for one, am looking forward to seeing what else Ms. Gilmore comes up with for this charming couple in Almost Hitched.

By Lauren (Romance Novel Giveaways) Ok...now I HAVE to know what happens! While this story doesn't involve a cliffhanger and is nicely concluded with a "Happy For Now," I am ANXIOUSLY awaiting the release of the full-length novel featuring Kate and Ian, Almost Hitched. We were introduced to Kate and Ian in an earlier book in this series, but this book does an excellent job of recapping their history for those who haven't read the previous book.I liked reading Kate because she was very direct. A little socially-challenged, when she needed to tell Ian something or needed to know something, she said so, no beating around the bush. I really liked that about her, and found that quality made the story progress quite nicely.Ian was absolutely adorable. He TRULY loved Kate, and Kylie did an excellent job of bringing that emotion off of the pages and making me FEEL how much he loved Kate.I read the whole book in one sitting, and did I mention that I CAN'T WAIT TO READ MORE OF KATE AND IAN'S STORY?!***I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***

She is somewhat emotionally and relationship stunted due to parents who did not show affection and who always pushed her in her academic studies.Ian Farnukle is a computer genius and a definite player.Four years ago, as they both spent the summer at their respective siblings' apartments across the hall from each other, Kate gave Ian her virginity.Kate has a very strong attraction to Ian and Ian has been in love with Kate all these years. Now, Ian crashes Kate's Physics Department Christmas Party wanting a relationship. Only problem is......Kate has a boyfriend. Will Ian get his Christmas wish and convince Kate her attraction is love? This is another great addition to Kylie's STUD series. This book definitely stands alone as Kylie does a great job giving background information on the characters, but you will want to read all the other books in the series. Don't miss out!!!

This is a short story. Life rarely gives second chances. With the help of meddling friends, the world's largest burrowing clam, and a hot lumberjack, Maggie Marrion and Gil Morrow got their second chance at love in Geoducks Are for Lovers. Now living together, they're discovering that sometimes the second time around, especially when it comes to sex, is better than the first. Or can be with the help of magical blue pills. Is a trip to the ER worth it for a night of wild sex at forty? Take Two is intended for mature audiences, 18 and up, because it contains middle age people kissing, recreational prescription drug use, and outdated references to the late 20th century. This Modern Love Story Short takes place chronologically at the beginning of Modern Love Story #2.

By mjlovestoread I loved Gil and Maggie's story in Geoducks are for Lovers and was thrilled to hear we would get more of this adorable couple.Take Two takes place after Geoducks but before Ready to Fall and gives us a sweet insight into how Gil and Maggie are faring, now sharing Gil's house in Portland. When Selah shows up with a 'shacking up' gift, you know that can only mean trouble. But with some great laughs and a night of chemically-enhanced passion, I was left smiling from ear to ear.Daisy Prescott does not disappoint and the references to songs from Gil and Maggie's college years together with sweet memories of unrequited love are all we need to set the stage for We Were Here, due early in 2016. I adore these characters and can't wait to read the prequel to their beautiful love.A fun 5 stars!

A steal for 99 pennies By Anima Giraldez If you've read Geoducks you should be intimately familiar with Maggie and Gil. This is sort of an update on their lives and nothing ever goes smoothly. Originally part of the L.O.L. Anthology each of Prescott's short stories is being released separately. Not required to read the novels however it makes the shorts that much better. A steal for 99 pennies!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Extremely disappointing(SPOILER ALERT) By W. Michelle Davis Ok in the beginning of the book I actually thought that it was going to be a good read but then as I continued to read I became confused with the timeline.  The book is originally set in the past, however the music references such as Matrimony by Wale ft. Usher would suggest that the events are occurring in the present simply because this song was released until June, 2015.  During this scene that is being set they are still in their junior year of highschool. At the very least this would make this book a futuristic book because at least a minimum of 5 years lapses which would put the year at 2020.  At about 32% into the book one minute Jae went over to Jayseon’s house to tell him goodbye because he was leaving going to college and then the next paragraph talks about an email that she received and that she hasn’t talked to or laid eyes on Jayceon in 2 years???? I’m confused.  There was no segue no indication that time had elapsed or a seamless transition.  One minute they had just graduated from high school and walked across the stage and in the very next paragraph 2 years had lapsed.  At 35% we are given the indication that she lives on her own and now has a boyfriend by the name of Devin of whom we have absolutely no clue as to where he came from, how they met, or anything else pertinent about their relationship.  We are then told by Karmajae’s point of view that they are not in a committed relationship and that he has started to become extremely clingy.  Now previously it was stated that she would be attending an HBCU but we are given no indication of how college life transpired what her life has consisted of up to this point or nothing.  Fast forward further in the book we see the Jae and Jay meet for lunch and during their luncheon they are both very much aware of the strong feelings that they possess for one another but they let yet another opportunity pass them by.  Upon arriving home from her luncheon with Jay, Jae discovers Devin asleep in his car; after she wakes him up and takes a bath she comes back downstairs only to find him asleep on the couch.  Not really feeling this she proceeds to ride his face and right when she climaxes she yells out Jayceon!!!Devin exits stage left never to be heard from again.  Further along in the book at about 71% this chapter begins with Ranae talking and lamenting coming clean about a huge secret that she has been carrying around.  Right in the middle of her talking the point of view seemingly switches from Ranae to Karmajae.  This is an assumption because it isn’t clearly defined but based on what is being said i.e., “September 5 whoop, whoop!! It’s my birthday”  This leads me to believe that this is now Karmajae’s voice.  There are several more instances where the person speaking changes in mid stride.  The events that transpired with Ranae, her parents and Darrell were completely unbelievable. I find it highly questionable that if someone delivered the type of information that Darrell delivered to Ranae's mother and father that the end result would not have been how it was portrayed in the book. Secondly the timeframe that Ranae sat on her secret without letting anyone know whose life ultimately could have been in danger was again unbelievable especially since she says that she loves these girls like they were her sisters. The ending was very off-putting we see where the police arrive and it basically said they were questioned for hours and let go.  It doesn’t mention if Crystal is arrested, admitted into the Psych ward of a Mental hospital or nothing.  It just stops and moves to the next point.  They drive back to Baltimore with the intention of dropping everyone off when Danitra’s water breaks.  They get to the hospital and all of a sudden Karmajae sneaks off and her inner voice lets us know she is set to administer her own brand of justice for everyone that hurt her.  The premise of this story could have been really good and I can kind of see the path that the author was attempting to take but this book missed the mark by a long shot.  There were just too many discrepancies and the story was too choppy with way too many starts and stops for it to flow in the way I am sure she intended.  Even the title of the book has absolutely NOTHING to do with the actual events that are occurring in the book. As always I urge anyone that is following their dream to first ensure that they perfect their craft before presenting the finished work to the masses.  It is very clear that this was not done and whomever is on her team, is not providing her with good, solid, constructive feedback.  I can actually see the potential and with the right guidance and mentorship I think she has what it takes to eventually become a really good writer. Have I completely thrown in the towel with this author?  I think not. I think that she warrants another chance and will purchase her next project and hopefully will see growth and improvement with the writing.

The storyline was a good one, interesting as well I'd say because the prologue pulled me in. I was ready to read this book because it wasn't like the typical urban fiction read and was more like a suspense/mystery type book. About half way through I kinda figured it out, but continued to read through the end to see how it all played out.One chapter started out as Crystal, but appeared to be about Kemajae as you read on. This also happened throughout the entire book; several instances where the POV chapter started out as one character, but would switch midway through. The timelines were very unclear and moved to swiftly without there being a bridge to close the time gaps. We went from them being in middle school, then briefly to high school, which was followed by a 'mention' of Kamajae going to college, but no details of her college life. Fast forward to approximately 1-2 chapters later and she has this good job, house, car, etc and she's meeting with Jay. There was also no mention of the relationship between Crystal and Jay beyond the mention of them being together in high school, however when his character resurfaces, he's mentioning possibly marrying Crystal. The character development and background stories of each character were severely lacking. There were several other inconsistencies throughout the book in regards to Denetria. In the same chapter, she referred to Trevor as her husband several times to suggest they'd gotten married, but later in that same paragraph, she would say she couldn't wait until they were married. And the introduction of the other characters didn't always flow so well. Overall, it was a decent read but I feel (my opinion) it could've been wrapped up in one installment.

Beautiful, sumptuous and satisfying By Laurel Ann Just when I thought I had more editions of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE than I should ever own up to, I will freely admit to just one more. After all, what Janeite could resist this tempting package? An unabridged first edition text; Annotations by an Austen scholar; Color illustrations; Over-sized coffee table format; Extensive introduction; And, supplemental material - all pulled together in a beautifully designed interior and stunning cover. *swoon* Where are my aromatic vinegars? This new annotated edition appeals to modern readers on many levels beyond being a pretty package of a beloved classic. Austen is renowned for her witty dialogue and finely drawn characters, but not for her elaborate physical descriptions or historical context. When PRIDE AND PREJUDICE was originally published in 1813, this brevity was accessible to her contemporary readers who assumed the inferences, but after close to two hundred years words have changed their meaning, insinuations and subtle asides have become fuzzy, and cultural differences from Regency to twenty-first century are worlds apart. Anyone can read PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and follow the narrative, but it is so much more enjoyable if you can read it on an expanded level understanding it in social, cultural and historical context. Editor Patricia Meyer Spacks has not only added extensive notes on plot, characters, events, history, culture and critical analysis from a vast array of Austen and literary scholars, but added her own personal insights and observations from years of reading Austen and her experience as a college professor. From shoe roses to Fordyces Sermons to military floggings to the 19th-century meaning of condescension, readers will be informed and enlightened on every aspect related to the novel, the author and her times. In a nut shell, she has vetted great resources, gathered nuggets of knowledge and placed them at our feet.As with all of Austen's characters, this new annotated edition of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE has its own charms, "frailties, foibles and follies." Weighing in at over three pounds, and encompassing 464 pages of unabridged text and fine print margin notes, this book easily reigns as the most all-inclusive and well-researched edition of Jane Austen's masterpiece that I have ever encountered. Considering that the elaborate annotation classifies it as a reference work in addition to a full text, it is quite puzzling that it lacks an index. In addition, the illustrations are expertly selected but sadly lost some of their refinement in the printing process, coming across dark and murky in places. However, I was pleased to see a list of further reading and illustration credits listed in the back of the book to encourage readers to "add something more substantial, in the improvement of [their] minds by extensive reading."Beautiful, sumptuous and satisfying, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE: AN ANNOTATED EDITION is a monumental achievement that should be on the top of your holiday wish list and considered one of few editions available to be esteemed truly accomplished.Laurel Ann, Austenprose

Taylor Jane Austen is one of the great masters of the English language, and PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is her great masterpiece, a sharp and witty comedy of manners played out in early 19th Century English society, a world in which men held virtually all the power and women were required to negotiate mine-fields of social status, respectability, wealth, love, and sex in order to marry both to their own liking and to the advantage of their family. And such is particularly the case of the Bennetts, a family of daughters whose father's estate is entailed to a distant relative, for upon Mr. Bennett's death they will lose home, land, income, everything. But are the Bennett daughters up to playing a winning hand in this high-stakes matrimonial game without forfeiting their own personal integrity? This battle of the sexes is largely seen through the eyes of second daughter Elizabeth, who possesses a razor-sharp wit and rich sense of humor--and who finds herself hindered by her own addlepated mother, her sister Jane's hopeless love for the wealthy Mr. Bingley, and her sister Lydia's penchant for scandal... not to mention the high-born, formidable, and outrageously proud Mr. Darcy, who seems determined to trump her every card. But the game of love proves more surprising than either Elizabeth or Mr. Darcy can imagine, and sometimes a seemingly weak hand proves a winning one when all cards are on the table.PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is simply one of the funniest novels ever written, peopled with memorable characters brought vividly to life as they both succeed and fail at the game of life according to the manners of their era. It is a novel to which I return again and again, enjoying Austen's brillant talent. I have little respect for people who describe it as dull, slow, out of date, for as long as men and women live and fall in love it will never be out of style, always be meaningful, and always be funny. A masterpiece of wit and style; a timeless novel for the ages.

Another reader complained about the tiny and almost unreadable font - you probably bought the version published by General Books LLC - and here's the reason.General Books LLC is an imprint of VDM Publishing, (google them and take a look at the Wikipedia article on them) and they specialise in publishing books that are free of copyright without doing any editing or quality control. A few quotes from the publishers website will explain more:"We created your book using OCR software that includes an automated spell check. Our OCR software is 99 percent accurate if the book is in good condition. However, with up to 3,500 characters per page, even one percent can be an annoying number of typos....After we re-typeset and designed your book, the page numbers change so the old index and table of contents no longer work. Therefore, we usually remove them. Since many of our books only sell a couple of copies, manually creating a new index and table of contents could add more than a hundred dollars to the cover price....Our OCR software can't distinguish between an illustration and a smudge or library stamp so it ignores everything except type. We would really like to manually scan and add the illustrations. But many of our books only sell a couple of copies....We created your book using a robot who turned and photographed each page. Our robot is 99 percent accurate. But sometimes two pages stick together. And sometimes a page may even be missing from our copy of the book. We would really like to manually scan each page and buy multiple copies of each original. But many of our books only sell a couple of copies..... "So what you're getting if you buy the version published by General Books LLC is a scanned in, unedited, low quality (and with an almost unreadable font from the sounds of it) unindexed / No table of contents book at a higher price than many of the good quality imprints available. Basically, VDM Publishing is flooding Amazon with these low quality prints (450,000 of them are listed now) and, unfortunately, many of them have the reviews associated with better quality imprints associated with them. The product description is insufficient for the buyer that's not aware of this publisher.Totally unethical marketing.A reader,Scott Hannigan has commented: "What you have given us is feedback - not a review. There is an appropriate forum for your complaints. You should delete it as it brings down the average score of a classic." In response, I have to say that Amazon does not provide a forum for complaints and has been remarkably resistant to taking on board criticism from many customers over the books published by General Books LLC. In addition, Amazon is the Printer of these POD books and makes a substantial cut from them. Sadly, given that the General Books LLC version is lumped in with other imprints from genuine publishers, there is no real way of making potential buyers aware of the problems with this particular version of the book without inflicting it on all the other versions available. C'est la vie.Scott - apologies for replying like this but Amazon removed my ability to comment some time ago - I broke ze commenting guidelines. Re "Amazon does provide a feedback section. You will find it under 'My Account', 'Personalization', 'Leave Seller Feedback'" - yes, they do indeed but the response to myself and many others has been uniformly that it's not their problem. Look up the discussion forum on Alphascript Books for a very enlightening backgrounder on this one. That said, if you bought a book from General Books LLC and saw what it was like, you'd be highly annoyed - as most buyers have been - and even if you returned it to Amazon for a refund, you'd be out of pocket for the postage.

Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is doing themselves a serious discourtesy. This is an amazing adaptation of Thompson's work with beautifully drawn art by Troy Little. I'd never heard of Mr. Little before but I'll definitely keep my eye out for his books now. 5/5

Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' is a graphic novel by Troy Little based on the book. In many ways, this seems like the perfect form for such a bonkers piece of literature.I've read the original book, and I've seen the movie based on the book. Now I've read the graphic novel adaptation, and I found myself nodding my head and realizing this version is a darn near perfect adaptation. For those not familiar, the book is about a trip to Las Vegas in the post 1960s by a journalist and his attorney friend to report on a motorcycle race. A large quantity of illegal substances are consumed and not much sleep is had and the book feels like the fever dream of a lunatic. There are hallucinations of reptiles, the trashing of hotel rooms, and the paranoia of being caught and thrown in prison for multiple infractions. Along the way, there is a thread woven of post-idealism in a world where we are still in the Vietnam War and the dreams of the young seem like fading memories. There is quite a bit of text, and I love that it's done in a typewriter font. The art is cartoonish, which is absolutely perfect for this story. The hallucinations pop off the pages and the art warps and bends depending on the abused drug. It's a crazy trip and the art is perfect for the whole thing.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, Top Shelf Productions, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

By Red Hood Excellent adaptation that didn't eschew the meat of the Good Doctor's story for the sake of an easier presentation. The artwork was adorable but never felt out of place. Highly recommended. Fans of F&L won't be disappointed.

Kate and Marco are good people with big hearts, each trying to look out for friends, family, and clients. Their story has just the right amount of heartbreak, too. They don't have an easy & breezy path to a happily-ever-after. But we know they'll have fun trying--the chemistry between them sizzles!
