"Alternately lyrical and laugh-out-loud funny."—New York Times “Deliciously readable . . . Donald Hall, if abandoned by the muse of poetry, has wrought his prose to a keen autumnal edge.” — Wall Street Journal   His entire life, Donald Hall has dedicated himself to the written word, putting together a storied career as a poet, essayist, and memoirist. Now, in the “unknown, unanticipated galaxy” of very old age, he is writing essays that startle, move, and delight. In Essays After Eighty, Hall ruminates on his past: “thirty was terrifying, forty I never noticed because I was drunk, fifty was best with a total change of life, sixty extended the bliss of fifty . . .” He also addresses his present: “When I turned eighty and rubbed testosterone on my chest, my beard roared like a lion and gained four inches.”  Most memorably, Hall writes about his enduring love affair with his ancestral Eagle Pond Farm and with the writing life that sustains him every day: “Yesterday my first nap was at 9:30 a.m., but when I awoke I wrote again.”  “Alluring, inspirational hominess . . . Essays After Eighty is a treasure . . . balancing frankness about losses with humor and gratitude.” — Washington Post   “A fine book of remembering all sorts of things past, Essays After Eighty is to be treasured.” — Boston Globe

Essays After Eighty, by Donald Hall

Review "As this book shows, Hall...has not lost his touch. Laconic, witty, and lyrical, Hall is a master stylist, yet he remains refreshingly humble and matter-of-fact ...By exploring the joys and vicissitudes of a long life, this work offers revealing insights into the human condition—and the grit and openness it requires." --Publishers Weekly, starred review  "The writing life at age 85...[A] sense of joy infuses these gentle essays. "Old age sits in a chair," writes Hall, "writing a little and diminishing." For the author, writing has been, and continues to be, his passionate revenge against diminishing. " --Kirkus Reviews"Wry, tangy prose...Many readers may find themselves hoping they’ll be this cogent and canny when they’re “after 80.” --Booklist"Deliciously readable...Donald Hall, if abandoned by the muse of poetry, has wrought his prose to a keen autumnal edge."--Wall Street Journal "alternately lyrical and laugh-out-loud funny...seductive frankness and bracing precision."--New York Times Science Times "alluring, inspirational hominess....Essays After Eighty is a treasure...balancing frankness about losses with humor and gratitude."--Washington Post "In this collection of 14 essays, the literary lion chews over his life-in-letters with a deft wit...[Hall] is caustic, funny, wise without being didactic, and even sexy."--Chicago Tribune "instinct with humor and mischievousness...A fine book of remembering all sorts of things past, Essays After Eighty is to be treasured."--Boston Globe "refreshingly direct, efficient, down-to-earth (also earthy), and witty...These deeply human moments enlighten — even comfort the reader — when Donald Hall converts them into engaging and memorable language...Essays After Eighty is lively testimony to his having done the one thing he always wanted to do — write it! — and doing it better than most of us can even dream of doing."--Los Angeles Review of Books"Donald Hall is a master of language, observation and surprise...poignant and blunt...Hall is reliably colorful and eloquent across the board."--Portland Press Herald  "The prose of Essays After Eighty is a poet’s prose. Hall is working with sentence and paragraph, not line and stanza, but every word counts. Concrete images propel his sentences, and he is a master of momentum and suspense. The reader sees or tastes a moment and yearns to know what happens next."--Concord Monitor

From the Inside Flap “Laconic, witty, and lyrical, Hall is a master stylist, yet he remains refreshingly humble and matter-of-fact about fame (his and others) . . . By exploring the joys and vicissitudes of a long life, [Essays After Eighty] offers revealing insights into the human condition—and the grit and openness it requires.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review   Former poet laureate Donald Hall has lived a remarkable life of letters, a career capped by a National Medal of Arts, awarded by the president. Now, in the “unknown, unanticipated galaxy” of very old age, he is writing searching essays that startle, move, and delight. In the transgressive and horrifyingly funny “No Smoking,” he looks back over his lifetime, and several of his ancestors’ lifetimes, of smoking unfiltered cigarettes, packs of them every day. Hall paints his past: “Decades followed each other — thirty was terrifying, forty I never noticed because I was drunk, fifty was best with a total change of life, sixty extended the bliss of fifty . . .” And poignantly, often joyfully, he limns his present: “When I turned eighty and rubbed testosterone on my chest, my beard roared like a lion and gained four inches.” Hall writes about a car trip through post–World War II Yugoslavia, his deep depression after being appointed poet laureate, his regard for garlic—and, most memorably, about his enduring love affair with his ancestral Eagle Pond Farm and with the writing life that sustains him every day: “Yesterday my first nap was at 9:30 a.m., but when I awoke I wrote again.”

But he shows considerable powers as an essayist in this concentrated little set. There's a nice circularity here: he begins with a description of his day--compressed into just a few small rooms of his old farmhouse. He then takes us through a group of set pieces, a newlywed drive through Yugoslavia, illnesses that stole a wife, honors (and dishonors), and then increasing infirmities that bring us back to life in the here and now. There are moments of great seriousness, but just as many that show a wonderful dry wit (his one-sentence description of Mick Jagger is worth the entire book). At most times, Hall maintains a certain distance: just as he did in his poetry. He's not dispassionate, but instead he's leaving room for the readers to experience their own emotions--to inhabit the world with him. This is not what you might expect from a valedictory, but it shows a real generosity. He's not preparing to die. Instead he's learning to live in a smaller world.I'm now at the boundary between late middle age and whatever we might call the next stage. Most of Hall's experience of old age lies in front of me (let's hope). But much of what I see in my ancient parents and their diminishing circle is well-described here. It's an interesting land of hope, disappointment and grace.

A fresh old voice (and a beautiful little book) By julesinrose This is a wonderful (but slim) collection of essays; Donald Hall's musings on his past and present. He is (obviously) in his eighties, and his voice is clear. In our youth obsessed culture, we need to hear more from the old and for that alone I am glad for this book.I don't appreciate reading synopses of books, so I won't write one, and anyway, this volume is thin enough that telling you much about it would spoil the fun of reading. I came to it fresh, not having read him before (indeed), and found it a wonderful read. Mr. Hall's style is spare, pointedly witty, and often wise.I read this book on an afternoon where we had no power in our home in Maine; I read bits aloud to my husband. We're in our late fifties and live in a town where we are on the younger side of middle and old age. So, reading this spoke to much of our condition. So, we (not just I) enjoyed Mr. Hall's sharing of his life and memories, and sharing his gratitude for that life, both past and present. Even more, I enjoyed that he did so without veering into either sweet sentimentality or the (terribly overdone) stance of an old curmudgeon. He has led a good and robust life and still does, though now from a wheelchair. There's no self pity in that; the life of his mind is rich indeed, and he had led a fairly charmed and privileged life before (and I suppose he still does). We need to understand the richness of simply looking out a window. Mr. Hall tells us about this without preaching it. He may be an old man, but his voice sounds totally fresh. He is simply telling us what life has been and is for him. He is a writer, so he writes it. And anyway, this isn't a self help book.I've written enough; I'm not a writer, but Mr. Hall certainly is.In all, I felt I'd spent an afternoon with someone I'm glad I met. Hall's beautiful writing was a pleasure to read and I can not recommend a book more highly. Now I'll go back and read what came before.

Amazing and tells the truth without apology. I would recommend this book to anyone, but particularly the young so they can see "inside" aging. I would recommend it to the elderly so they will know they are not alone and don't just imagine things that are said, happening and done to them.I'm putting this on my all time favorite books shelf along with The Secret Garden and John Steinbeck's writings.

Kissing Cooper: Heroes of Henderson ~ Christmas Quickie, by Liz Kelly

About the Author Growing up every summer in a place where dancing and romancing are literally part of its theme song, Liz Kelly can't help but be a romantic at heart. And since her favorite author, Kathleen E. Woodiwiss wrote some of the world's greatest romances, she's just trying to give the world a little more of that. (Okay, maybe a little sexier that, but we are now in a new millennium after all.) A graduate of Wake Forest University, where she met her handsome golf-addicted husband, (who is now sporting dark glasses everywhere he goes) Liz is a mother of two grown sons (also sporting dark glasses) and a miniature Labradoodle named Isabelle. They split their time between The Windy City of Chicago and the Fountain of Youth, a.k.a. Naples, FL where dancing and romancing continues on ad infinitum.

Certainly wasn't sure what to expect from my first book by Liz Kelly, and I know for a fact it will not be the last.Since others will give you a summary about the story, I will tell you what I liked about Kissing Cooper. First, it's not about YA but about a couple in their 30s who broke up 12 years ago, each hurt by that break up. Secondly, their characters were fully developed in a short time . Third, with just a few sentences, you got to know the secondary characters , who are all different from each other, but not less likable. Fourth is the fact that I was wanted to go to Henderson and spend some time there. I want to read the rest of the series. You will enjoy every minute of the book. Thank you Ms Kelly for a great read!

Collection One includes: Ava Stone’s Lady Patience’s Christmas Kitten ~ Lady Patience Post is about to lose the one thing she really wants for Christmas – the sweetest kitten in all the world. Luckily, a summons from the Duke of Danby arrives at the perfect time for a feline reprieve. Now if only the little Angora can behave himself in Yorkshire over the holidays so she can devise the perfect plan to keep him... Doctor Matthew Campion was not part of the plan. But after he treats Patience for an infected kitten bite, she can’t help falling completely in love with the handsome and thoughtful doctor. But will her family and the duke approve? Rose Gordon’s Mistletoe and Michaelmas ~ The last thing Daphne Cavanaugh wants to do is marry—well, perhaps not the last thing, but it's certainly not at the top of her list, especially if it's only to get her out of her guardian's hair… * Aaron Lentz has faith in marriage—for other people, that is. Having been betrayed and made a fool once before, he has no inclination to walk down the aisle… * But perhaps a sprig of mistletoe, a dash of fate and a shameless, meddling family (even in the form of an ancient duke), Michaelmas, 1816 might bring about a future they never expected. Lily George’s A Christmas Courtship ~ Anthony Carew, Earl of Bexley, is the unwitting object of scandal when his betrothed elopes with another man. While Bexley is all too happy to return to a quiet life of farming, his formidable grandmother, along with her brother, the Duke of Danby, have different plans. To quiet gossip and fulfill his duty as the eldest son, he must find a wife, and soon. * Shy Rosamond Hughes has secretly been in love with Bexley’s younger brother for years, and she is encouraged by his sisters to sweep the wandering younger son off his feet when he returns home for the holidays. What better way to hone her meager flirting skills than by practicing on their recently jilted brother, Bexley? * In her quest to follow her heart, Rosamond accompanies the Carews to Christmas at Danby Castle. After a few magical days, she finds that the man she adores is the man she’s been pretending to flirt with all along. Now it only remains for the young lady to convince the farmer to take a wife.

Any book that involves this meddlesome Duke is bound to be worth reading & The Duke’s Christmas Greetings did not disappoint. From Ava Stone’s Lady Patience’s Christmas Kitten (which has 1 of the triplets from One More Haunted Evening – another great book) to Rose Gordon’s Mistletoe and Michaelmas to Lily George’s A Christmas Courtship the Duke is quite busy.A great granddaughter trying to save her kitten, a doctor who believes himself unworthy, the sister-in-law of a grandson who doesn’t necessarily want to marry, a vicar who only believes in marriage for anyone but himself, a great nephew who’s been jilted & only wants to be left alone to tend to his land and a good family friend who loves the wrong brother. Leave it to Ms. Stone, Ms. Gordon & Ms. George to make sure the Duke has his hands full & to provide readers with laughter & hope. Wouldn’t miss reading these short stories & definitely look forward to the next set!

The Dukes Christmas Greetings By Amazon Customer This book contains 3 stories, centred around The Duke of Danbys Christmas house party, and I absolutely adored each story in this book. A great easy read, no need to have read other stories from the previous series or by the authors, but it was great meeting characters that I have meet in other books, by these authors. A fun read with a bit of Christmas spirit :)

By Carrie Renteria Ellie Danes and Lily Knight never fail to amaze me with their brilliant storyline's and amazing talent.Hunt's Desire Vol. 3 was an incredible ending to this amazing series. This volume is so full of emotion you really feel for Caleb and everything that he goes through. The author's really give you that character you love to hate in Megan from the moment they introduced her in book two. She's been the character that you despise the entire time and it's no different in this book. I love how all of the mystery and intrigue surrounding the Hunt Family is tied up in a neat little bow and cleared up in the end. This book does leave it open for more stories with Caleb and Skye so I'm hopeful that we will see more of them in the future.

Until that point I felt something for the H/h characters, I felt like they were connecting and I could see progression in the relationship. Then chapter 5 and Megan came along and Caleb's actions totally ruined him as a hero to me. He was still just a selfish cheat and liar. I was disgusted and just felt bad for Skye. That is where the story was lost on me. And for Rosie to push him towards her daughter after the shower scene... NEVER would I forgive a man for disrespecting my daughter that way! I also felt the ending was rushed and I was left happier for Rosie and Gordan than Caleb and Skye. So much potential....

The only reason I didn't like book 3 is because of Caleb reverting to his old ways. Yes, Meghan the ex-girlfriend was throwing herself at him but it didn't mean he needed to act. I was very disappointed that not only did he act but that he never told Skye. It was like it never happened and they get back together?!? I would have hoped he would have went after her for answers and to tell her how he felt along with explaining Meghan's lies. The rest of the story seemed hurriedly thrown together and it was more about Rosie's HEA than Skye's.

After Finn and an elite group of peers are invited to Blackstone’s top-secret HQ, Finn realizes she may have a chance to confront her father. But when a highly sophisticated company AI morphs into a killing machine, the trip descends into chaos. Trapped inside shape-shifting walls, Finn and her friends are at the mercy of an all-seeing intelligence that will destroy everything to get to her.

Infinity Lost (The Infinity Trilogy Book 1), by S. Harrison

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—Most people don't know that Finn is actually Infinity Blackstone, daughter of the brilliant and elusive founder of Blackstone Technology. Ever since her mother passed away, Finn was raised by various members of the household staff. While at boarding school, Finn began having strange dreams that distorted her childhood memories. Unsure of the truth and determined to confront her father, the teen takes advantage of a field trip to Blackstone Technology headquarters. What was originally an innocent plan quickly devolves into a dangerous melee when the robotic technology turns murderous. Finn isn't sure she will be able to piece her memories together in time to save her friends, much less make sense of what these dreams mean for her. Harrison's writing changes frequently between the forward progression of the story line and snippets of flashbacks to various stages of Finn growing up. These transitions are occasionally confusing, but usually because Finn herself is struggling to make sense of the memories. Other than the protagonist, the characters have little depth, although this may be shaped by Finn's perception of them. The plot follows a relatively predictable path that is only surprising in the last few chapters' vividly grotesque violence. The book ends in a cliff-hanger, leaving readers to assume that a sequel will address remaining questions. VERDICT Recommended for avid science-fiction fans; a good addition to larger collections.—Paige Rowse, Needham High School Library, Massachusetts

Infinity Lost By LMN11 Three and a half stars.I got this book today as part of the Kindle First program and I've managed to read the entire thing. The fact that I managed to read it in a single day shows just how well this book held my attention.Infinity Blackstone, aka "Finn" is the 17 year old daughter of Richard Blackstone, CEO of Blackstone Industries and the richest, most influential man in the world. And yet Finn has never met her father and knows nothing of him other than what she hears in news reports. But when she turns 17, Finn begins to ask herself more questions about her past. For the first 16 years of her life, she's never had dreams. But starting the night of her 17th birthday, Finn begins having vivid dreams where she recalls memorable events from her childhood. Except that as she relives these events, details of her past that she didn't remember start revealing themselves. Like why did her nanny warn of her father's bad intentions towards her? And how was it possible for her broken arm to heal itself in two days? Is anything that Finn remembers of her past really accurate, or are her dreams revealing the truth? Just who, exactly, is she? With the help of her best friend Bit, Finn goes on a quest to get some answers. They hack their way into Blackstone Technologies, and try to hunt down her father. Will they succeed in finding him? Will Finn ever learn the truth about her past?I couldn't believe it but this book had me riveted from the opening pages. And the suspense keeps building up as the story progresses. Finn is a likeable character and easy to relate to.However, I was very disappointed by the ending. I wasn't shocked by the ending, because the I had a pretty good hunch what was going on. But without giving the ending away, all I'll say is that I was disappointed by it. It didn't like how Finn's character ended. And I didn't like that the book ends on a cliff hanger, leaving a lot of loose strings and unanswered questions. This book is clearly part of a triology, so I'm sure all of the loose ends will be tied up in the next two books. But be warned that if you want "closure", you'll have to commit to reading the entire triology and paying six buckaroos or so for each of the following books. The science fiction and technology aspects were handled well. The author's explanation for how the technology worked made sense from a scientific standpoint and wasn't overly complicated. However, his descriptions of the technology, surroundings, etc tended to be a bit long and I found myself skimming over page long descriptions, eager to get back to the storyline. The incessant, immature bickering that existed amongst Finn's classmates was also a bit exasperating. The repetitive "You shut up!" "No, you shut up!" that went back and forth between the boys got very old very fast and held up the progression of the story. There was also some moderate violence and mild language in this book. No sex scenes.Overall, I did think this was a good book. It was unique, suspenseful, and held my attention. If it wasn't for the unlikeable ending and all the loose strings, I easily would have given this book four and half stars. But I do think others will enjoy it.

By Bill Anderson Length: 246 pages. This debut novel is a fast-paced page turner that is very nearly a five star science-fiction gem. Since I abhor reviews that are, essentially, a condensed version of the story, and since I loathe spoilers, I'm going to speak in more general terms so you can make your own purchase decision, yet still enjoy the story as it unfolds.Imagine a world in which Apple (or Microsoft or Amazon or Google) has become so wildly successful that every facet of your daily life is perfect and has been provided by that one tech company. The trouble with such a setting is to create a believable conflict, but this author passes this task fairly well. I could suspend my disbelief.I also was surprised that this book was so fast-paced even though it had long chapters. The trend lately, in fiction, is to keep short paragraphs with cliff hangers at the end of each chapter. The writer goes against that trend with panache.Where the story is weak, however, is in character development. As a reader investing my time into a story, I want to love the heroine and despise, even if respectfully, the villain. I also want to experience shock, horror, remorse or fear when I come across a corpse. One other issue, as noted by another reviewer. Infinity Lost ends on a cliffhanger, forcing readers to look for closure by purchasing the next installment. Therefore, although I did find this an engaging, intriguing read that I could zip through in a single sitting, I can rate it only four stars.Good enough to encourage me to read the next installment, but this could have been a great story with only a little more effort.Again, this is an excellent debut novel worth my investment in reading time. Gimme more....

I was a bit confused in the beginning about the young protagonist, Finn. She seemed to be a rather remarkable young girl. This in itself is not unusual, but there are glimpses of things that should be impossible for her to accomplish. I liked that this was something new, that it did not explain right away what was so unusual about Finn. It gave me things to think about when I had to stop reading and attend to those annoying life responsibilities. What is it that keeps Finn's father in the shadows? Who is Jonah Brogan? Why has he taken such an interest in Finn's development? Those are some of the questions that kept me reading. There's not a lot more I can tell you about this book without spoiling the story for you. The writing definitely kept me turning the pages. I wanted to know what was different about Finn. This is a solid Science Fiction/Fantasy offering that was an easy read. The second book Infinity Rises is scheduled for release in January, 2016. I will be looking forward to some answers about Infinity. I hope the next book is as enjoyable as the first. This is a Kindle First Pick for October. I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

We were two hearts, two souls, devastated by the same loss. I met Beau Ryland where the red clay danced along the water’s edge, and bursts of light rained down on us. A night when the heat couldn’t be escaped. As he whispered against sun-kissed summer-sweet skin, “Baby, look up and get lost on that everlasting light,” it was easy to believe it would last forever. But things changed. My heart aches when I see him on that stage in front of thousands. I don’t want that voice to be one I used to know. I want it to be everlasting.

By Mommays4 I was fortunate to have the privilege to be a part of the beginning stages of this emotionally heartfelt book, along with a wonderful group of women and watch it evolve into a beautiful story of what the meaning of true love really is. If I could give this story 10**********'s plus I would. This book will grip your interest from the beginning and by the end it will grip your heart.Beau and Bently are an unlikely couple that experience falling in love, hurting in love, and the truest form of pure love. Bentley recently graduating from college, is enticed by her friend to attended a lakeside party to celebrate. Being more reserved and always following a plan Bentley reluctantly agrees, because her friend tells her that her teenage crush will be there. Beau, is that teenage crush. He is wanting to taking a break from his tour on the road to becoming the next big country singer, goes to the party with his friends and sister for some normalcy before going back. By a chance meeting Bentley clumsily falls for Beau in the literary sense when she clumsily trips and tumbles into his lap.          "I did the move where I face-planted and flopped down the hill into another log. There went my beer, and me, sailing through the air."     " When I landed, on Beau Ryland's lap." -Bently SchowThis is the beginning of their chance meeting. From this point they discover that there is more to their relationship than just a physical attraction. It is a time of discovery and feeling free to be who they truly are.     "Come on you gotta jump sometime."     "I told you...I got you." -Beau RylandCan true love endure tragedy? I can answer that question but if I did, you wouldn't be able to discover the beauty of this book for your own pleasure.     "There's a girl I used to know. Under the stars I gave her light and sparked a fire. Baby look up, I'm begging, make a wish on that                                                                         EVERLASTING LIGHT."I have followed Shey Stahl from the beginning stages and have watched her emerge as a seriously wonderful author.

I love to read and normally read books that take me away from reality. This book was opposite of that, but did not disappoint! It was a love story full of every emotion, including some we don't want to face but sometimes people have to. Shey did a great job capturing the feelings of her characters, good and sad. Beau is such a wonderful man, inside and out and I loved the awkwardness Bentley had. Their love story is heartwarming and shows people can get their HEA even after the most tragic situation.

It made me laugh; "No, but if you pull my hair, you better spank my ass." ~Shey Stahl This story also made me cry. This story is a story of love, healing, and never truly giving up on what love means.
