From the author of Secret of a Thousand Beauties and Peach Blossom Pavilion comes a beautifully written novel of self-discovery and intrigue.   Chinese-American assistant professor Eileen Chen specializes in folk religion at her San Francisco college. Though her grandmother made her living as a shamaness, Eileen publicly dismisses witchcraft as mere superstition. Yet privately, the subject intrigues her.   When a research project takes her to the Canary Islands—long rumored to be home to real witches—Eileen is struck by the lush beauty of Tenerife and its blend of Spanish and Moroccan culture. A stranger invites her to a local market where women sell amulets, charms, and love spells. Gradually Eileen immerses herself in her exotic surroundings, finding romance with a handsome young furniture maker. But as she learns more about the lives of these self-proclaimed witches, Eileen must choose how much trust to place in this new and seductive world, where love, greed, and vengeance can be as powerful, or as destructive, as any magic.

During her trip to the Canary Islands to research her professorial thesis, the reader follows Eileen Chen as she navigates a personal search for her own identity. As the story unfolds, Eileen is unaware of the adventures awaiting her as she sets out to find and record the activities of local witches. Readers wishing they could learn the secrets of communicating with the inhabitants of this world and that of the deceased, will be charmed by one woman’s search for her own destiny amid daily dramas of the local inhabitants.

By Debbie Haupt-The Reading Frenzy Mingmei Yip’s inventive page-turner captivated me from page one. Using her unique storytelling voice she mixes Chinese myths, legends and beliefs with an evocative present day literary tale that includes a cryptic mystery. This she delivers through her prose like narrative that’s spot on for depicting her exotic locales and her imaginative, off the wall characters including her enigmatic, fanciful and realistic heroine, Eileen. Her innovative blending of cultures, the lessons in Chinese witchcraft and the dreamlike, Alice down the rabbit hole feel makes this adult fairytale the perfect choice for any fan of Magical-Realism.On her 33rd birthday Eileen Chen decided to become a witch. She hailed from a long line of witches as her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother practiced the art. She knew the basics of witchcraft taught to her by those women but instead of practicing Eileen decided to become a scholar of Shamanism, got her Ph.D. and took an assistant professorship at San Francisco State University. Her boss had been urging her to publish a book on Shamanism and western witches, which just might get her a tenured position. So deciding to combine both goals the choice of where to go to find out all about witchcraft conveniently came to her in a dream, which led her to the mystical and mysterious Canary Islands. With the blessings of her boss and her younger sister, plus a begrudged blessing from her sometimes boyfriend Eileen took off for an epic, hopefully life changing adventure. What happens when she gets there is the stuff of fairytales.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. this was a really nice read, albeit a little bit slow By Nimily This book centers around a Chinese American folk religion teacher named Eileen Chen. Eileen's grandmother was a Chinese Shaman, and made her living by helping clients in magical and mysterious ways. Eileen, on the other hand, decided to follow a different path and study witchcraft and shamanism from an academic level only. I wouldn't say that she is necessarily a non-believer, but she is more or less an ordinary woman. In the beginning of the book, Eileen is encouraged by her boss to take a year long sabbatical in order to delve deeper into the world of witchcraft and hopefully gain tenure by writing a book about it. At first, she is not sure where to go, but a dream ends up leading her to the Canary Islands, where the story truly begins. There are some aspects of this book that seemed a little bit convenient and hard to believe. For example, Eileen meets many people while on the Islands, and they continuously treat her as if she is someone they have always known. First the witches in the marketplace, who somehow know that Eileen is "also a witch", then a man with his own hotel who finds her and invites her to stay indefinitely, next a friend of his who is lonely, dying, and has more money than she knows what to do with, and finally a young man and his grandpa who immediately take her in and invite her to live with them. The idea of people just throwing money or their hearts at her constantly feels a little bit far-fetched. Perhaps it would be more believable if more exploration had gone into building a relationship with these people beforehand, but there was very little of that. Most of the relationships come later, long after these new characters have accepted Eileen into their lives. This could be a flaw in the writing, or it could be something more... perhaps a result of the subtle and hidden powers that Eileen seems to possess? I really don't know for sure but nagged at me a little bit. That aside, this was a really nice read, albeit a little bit slow. I would classify this book as a coming of age mixed with a tiny bit of mystery. If you go into it expecting there to be more fantasy and supernatural elements, you will be disappointed. If you go into it expecting it to be a simple story about a woman who is searching to find herself, you will probably like it a lot. The magic is there, but it is extremely subtle and rarely mentioned. It seems to mainly exist to draw Eileen closer to discovering what happened to a young lady who drowned in a lake a long time ago; a girl who has a psychic bond with Eileen and appears to her in visions from the very beginning of the book. There are a couple of parts of the book that really made it shine. First, the sculptures that are made by Luis' grandfather when Eileen comes upon him (led by a horse who she randomly decided to hop on and who ended up stranding her next to him in the middle of nowhere -- again, slightly convenient and weird, but sort of neat). The sculptures are described with so much detail and are so beautiful, that I could actually see them in my mind. This was a result of truly beautiful writing and I really enjoyed this tiny little detail in the book. The next thing that I really loved was the flashbacks Eileen has from time to time about her late grandmother. She talks about her grandmother's "office" where she would meet clients, and how she would go about treating them and diagnosing certain bad spirits. These stories were incredibly interesting and I would have loved it if there had been more of them in the book, or maybe if Eileen would have found more of a way to tap into her grandmother's power and actively use her gift, rather than just being on the receiving end of a couple of visions here and there. There is so much potential with the main character's background, and I do feel like a little of it was wasted by minimizing the fantasy elements of this story. I feel like it would have been a hundred times more powerful if there had been significantly more witchcraft in the story and very little of the actual narrative would have been lost by going that route, as it is a very tame story and could have really used a bit more spark. All in all, it was a good book, but probably not one I will read again. I would certainly be open to reading a sequel to find out how things turn out for all of the characters in the book though, since the ending had so many possibilities. I also think this author has a beautiful gift of writing and has so much potential... I hope that she can live up to it in her future books.

Set on the French Riviera in the late 1920s, «Tender Is the Night» is the tragic romance of the young actress Rosemary Hoyt and the stylish American couple Dick and Nicole Diver. A brilliant young psychiatrist at the time of his marriage, Dick is both husband and doctor to Nicole, whose wealth goads him into a lifestyle not his own, and whose growing strength highlights Dick's harrowing demise. A profound study of the romantic concept of character, «Tender Is the Night» is lyrical, expansive, and hauntingly evocative.

Tender Is the Night (Centaur Classics), by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Amazon.com Review In the wake of World War I, a community of expatriate American writers established itself in the salons and cafes of 1920s Paris. They congregated at Gertrude Stein's select soirees, drank too much, married none too wisely, and wrote volumes--about the war, about the Jazz Age, and often about each other. F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda, were part of this gang of literary Young Turks, and it was while living in France that Fitzgerald began writing Tender Is the Night. Begun in 1925, the novel was not actually published until 1934. By then, Fitzgerald was back in the States and his marriage was on the rocks, destroyed by Zelda's mental illness and alcoholism. Despite the modernist mandate to keep authors and their creations strictly segregated, it's difficult not to look for parallels between Fitzgerald's private life and the lives of his characters, psychiatrist Dick Diver and his former patient turned wife, Nicole. Certainly the hospital in Switzerland where Zelda was committed in 1929 provided the inspiration for the clinic where Diver meets, treats, and then marries the wealthy Nicole Warren. And Fitzgerald drew both the European locale and many of the characters from places and people he knew from abroad.

In the novel, Dick is eventually ruined--professionally, emotionally, and spiritually--by his union with Nicole. Fitzgerald's fate was not quite so novelistically neat: after Zelda was diagnosed as a schizophrenic and committed, Fitzgerald went to work as a Hollywood screenwriter in 1937 to pay her hospital bills. He died three years later--not melodramatically, like poor Jay Gatsby in his swimming pool, but prosaically, while eating a chocolate bar and reading a newspaper. Of all his novels, Tender Is the Night is arguably the one closest to his heart. As he himself wrote, "Gatsby was a tour de force, but this is a confession of faith."

From Publishers Weekly You can generally count on Naxos to produce superb audios of classics--but not this time. Trevor White gives a dull performance, though he handles conversation and dialogue better than straight narration and is not bad at accents. His emphases are stilted; he drops his voice at the ends of most sentences; and he reads every word so carefully he throws off the rhythms and phrasing, and thus the tone and meaning. A disappointing reading of Fitzgerald's last, most lyrical, most autobiographical novel. (Aug.) (c) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Review "A tragedy backlist by beauty." "-- Daily Express""For Fitzgerald desolation is a precondition of the lyrical. Hence the most distinctive impression of Tender: A beautiful novel about failure." "-- Independent""It is one of those books that you read and feel a shift... the story is told so poetically and eloquently. It is one of those books that you read and think: if I could only remember that sentence -- it is so beautiful." "--" Sam Taylor-Wood

By nicjaytee Thought provoking and brilliantly written "Tender is the Night" etches itself into your brain: once read, never forgotten. Longer, looser but more complex and much darker in its subject matter than "The Great Gatsby", Scott Fitzgerald similarly transcends time & place to leave you with quite unforgettable images. For example, describing an open-air dinner party on the Cote d'Azur he writes: "There were fireflies riding on the dark air and a dog baying on some low and far-away ledge of the cliff. The table seemed to have risen a little toward the sky like a mechanical dancing platform, giving the people around it a sense of being alone with each other in the dark universe, nourished by its only food, warmed by its only lights." And, thirty years after first reading that wonderfully evocative description, it's still there: burned-in as a reference-point that follows me around all open-air late night parties... just waiting for that distant bark.Replete with similar passages, "Tender is the Night" juxtaposes romantic idylls with the personal tragedies surrounding most of its characters, and, in so doing, triumphs in exploring the differences between perception and reality, superficiality versus excess, strength of character versus fear & weakness, and uncontrollable madness versus self-induced self-destruction. Drawing you into a hedonistic world that you would sincerely wish to be part of and then exploding its deficiencies in front of you, it leaves you realising that not all is what it seems.Closing with a superbly structured final paragraph that ranks as one of the most effective I've ever read - bringing together everything that the book seeks to explore in a few cogently dismissive and understated sentences - this is writing at its very best: compelling, perceptive, complex, timeless and, beneath its superficially "glossy" exterior, very true. If you haven't read it do: it's one of the best books out there.

Fitzgerald's Forgotten Masterpiece By A Customer The Great Gatsby is without a single doubt one of the greatest American novels ever written and has well deserved its position as a permanent fixture in American literarture classes. Everyone and their sister had read The Great Gatsby. I personally loved it, but that was before I read Tender is the Night. It touched my heart and got under my skin an infinity more deeply than The Great Gatsby. It is a work that cries with hopelessness, loneliness, and broken dreams.Tender is the Night chronicles the downfall and eventual ruin of Dick Diver, a smart, handsome pshychiatrist. He has everything in life going for him. He has friends, beautiful children, money, ability, and so much love for his wife Nicole. But this idealistic life can not long endure and Dick's sparkling world soon begins to unravel. Nicole turns out to be a schizophrenic. Though her mental illness has been dormant for years, it begins to resurface, destroying Dick's confidence, optimism, his marriage, and his very life.Tender is the Night is almost painful in its emotion. Fitzgerald seems to have filled the very pages of the book full of his tears. As this book was written, his own wife Zelda institutionalized as a schizophrenic, making this novel semi-autobiographical. This work is so astounding simply because of the feeling it reveals straight from the heart of its author, making it one of the most intimate portraits I have ever read. Tender is the Night is an absolute masterpiece.

77 of 83 people found the following review helpful. a legitimate and very human tragedy: By asphlex I liked Tender is the Night even more than I expected to. As a fan of a few of his other works (notably The Great Gatsby, This Side of Paradise and The Collected Short Stories), I went into this book with a healthy enthusiasm. . . What I discovered was a story that was painful to watch unfold and one that kept me engaged and interested in what was happening from the first page to the end.It tells the tale of Dick Diver, his wife Nicole, and numerous other equally complicated individuals who sway in and out of their lives over the years following World War One and just prior to the rise of Adolph Hitler. Americans living in or around Paris and the resort spots of France, these are rich people, people so rich that their money has literally destroyed them. They have become those rare people who don't have to wish for anything physical, whether it comes in the dream of a mansion on a hill in some far away country, a group of friends that includes royalty and movie stars, or sexual conquests with anyone you can even momentarily desire. All their dreams have, or could possibly on a whim, come true. And so there is nothing in this life left for them . . .It is a sad tale of likable people coming unglued, of seeing their lives destroyed and watching nobody care, regardless of their goodness. It is a story of absolute and utter desolation, finally, as the almost journalistic ending comes at you. It is like falling out of touch with someone who was once the most important person in your life, hearing vague stories about what they are up to and realizing they are getting fainter and fainter and fainter . . .This was quite obviously a very personal book for its author, a disillusioned man who saw many of his own dreams come true early on and who was left to watch his own joy turn into boredom and finally complete indifference. This book is the nightmare that all of us hope never comes true. It is somewhat comforting, in the end, to realize that in spite of his own early death, his crazy wife and his alcoholism, F. Scott Fitzgerald's story isn't anywhere near as terrible as this one.It is, among a multitude, one of the better books I have ever read.

Holy freaking hell. I didn’t expect to open my door to all this. I was expecting maybe another angry towns person come to give me a piece of their mind about my refurbishment of my on-the-brink-of-foreclosure inn. Or maybe just a tree branch knocking the wall in the summer storm, or something else that wouldn’t be too much of a problem. But certainly not the tall, dark, handsome stranger who sweeps me off my feet and definitely brings trouble with him. As I quickly learn, Mackenzie East is not a man easily refused. He’s relentless, a man of power, a man of wealth, and he’s used to getting what he wants, how he wants it. And he wants me. Mac is sexy and smart and everything I have ever wanted but how much of a coincidence is his impressive appearance on my rundown doorstep, just before it burns to the ground leaving me homeless? WARNING: This ends with a cliffhanger. The next two parts will be out in a few days. Adult content. Not suitable for young readers.

Could Reagan be making a huge mistake?

“You fools,” Elder Allen hisses once more, and I flinch. “You may have scorned my methods, and not liked the way I did things, but I did all of that for a reason. I worked tirelessly to keep things the way they were, because the alternative…” he shakes his greying head, “the alternative is just too horrific to contemplate.” Reagan, Connor, and the rest of the Shepherds might be down, but they aren't out. They're determined to find a way off loony island, and help the rest of the Flock escape unharmed too. But have they misjudged their foe? Is their enemy even more dangerous than they first thought? And will Andie ever come to her senses and help them? Romantic dystopian island adventure, packed full of twists and turns. An action packed story you won't want to put down.

Deliverance: The Island III, by C.B. Stone

About the Author C.B. Stone is sometimes called author, writer, or purveyor of stories. One might even dub her a yarn spinner, if you will. It’s very possible she might be considered just a little left of normal by most, but she’s cool with that. Really, she’s too busy avoiding normal to care. On any given day, you might find Stone pounding away at a keyboard in sunny Florida, contemplating waves, contemplating life, and dreaming up more exciting stories to share with readers. Except Sunday’s of course. Sunday’s are God’s day, so you’ll often find her making her best “joyful noise” with her local church praise team. When not pounding poor fingers to bloody nuggets and reinventing the definition of eye strain, C.B. Stone enjoys living it up, doing the family thing, the kid thing, and the friend thing. And in her downtime, reading the minds of fans. Also being invisible. Being invisible is fun.

The action was great throughout the book and was a continuation of the fantastic action throughout the whole trilogy. Love the female lead in the story. Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if Reagan had not jumped off the prison ship, but am sure she did jump off into a more interesting story. No grammatical errors and the format of the book was perfect. Waiting for the arrival of the next trilogy. Keep up the perfect work !!!

A while ago I reviewed the first two books Desperation and Escalation. Deliverance picks up where Escalation leave us..Reagan and Connor and the rest of the Sect are still in jail, or what is considered jail. They spend their days working at different jobs, under close surveillance, and their nights in a cell with Elder Allen. The crazy old man tells them about a 'dirty bomb' David has hidden away somewhere on the island. Once he believes that his followers are too contaminated, he plans to kill them all. This sets the Sect members into action. They must find a way off the island fast. While trying to spread word that the Exodus is still going to take place, they learn there are a lot more help than they first thought. One day, an all out brawl starts up. That's when David disappears toward the docks. Reagan and Connor try to follow, only to be stopped by Josh, a devout strongly favoring with David. That is until he hears why they are chasing David, then joins them.David is stopped and tied up, but not before he detonates the bomb. There's no way to turn it off, or stop it. Josh makes a courageous sacrifice. He decides to take the boat away from the island to save everyone else, but will surly be the end of him.Reagan and Connor decide to stay on the island since David is no longer controlling everything and everyone. A lot of changes are happening fast. Everyone now has a choice to stay, or leave the island. Reagan and Connor finally admit their feelings for one another... maybe a wedding in the future? (Island Book Four maybe?)I absolutely loved this series. C.B. Stone is a very talented writer with a great big imagination, and knows how to mix them together! Maybe someday we can get a follow up. Kind of like 'where are they now' type book? That would be awesome! (Just a thought) If you haven't yet, READ this series!I received a complimentary copy of this book via the author in exchange for an honest review. These thoughts and opinions are all mine.

Of course you'll want to read it if you've read the other two. But before you do go back and review the last book. She jumps straight into the story line without so much as a dream or remembrance to help readers reaclimate to this story world. Also there was a believability problem. Russia, really?! It would have been more believable if he had built it himself before ever coming to the island. All in all the story delivers on action and romance as the Waywards struggle for free will.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in London on December 1843. The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim. A Christmas Carol tells the story of a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation into a gentler, kindlier man after visitations by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. The book was written at a time when the British were examining and exploring Christmas traditions from the past as well as new customs such as Christmas cards and Christmas trees. Carol singing took a new lease on life during this time. Dickens' sources for the tale appear to be many and varied, but are, principally, the humiliating experiences of his childhood, his sympathy for the poor, and various Christmas stories and fairy tales.Dickens was not the first author to celebrate the Christmas season in literature, but it was he who superimposed his humanitarian vision of the holiday upon the public, an idea that has been termed as Dickens' "Carol Philosophy". Dickens believed the best way to reach the broadest segment of the population regarding his concerns about poverty and social injustice was to write a deeply felt Christmas story rather than polemical pamphlets and essays. Dickens' career as a best-selling author was on the wane, and the writer felt he needed to produce a tale that would prove both profitable and popular. Dickens' visit to the work-worn industrial city of Manchester was the "spark" that fired the author to produce a story about the poor, a repentant miser, and redemption that would become A Christmas Carol. The forces that inspired Dickens to create a powerful, impressive and enduring tale were the profoundly humiliating experiences of his childhood, the plight of the poor and their children during the boom decades of the 1830s and 1840s, and Washington Irving's essays on old English Christmas traditions published in his Sketch Book (1820); and fairy tales and nursery stories, as well as satirical essays and religious tracts.

It's a classic and Charles Dickens was a master of his craft. This is something you can read with kids or just for yourself. The digital version is complete and includes illustrations intermingled throughout the text.If you’re not familiar with the story, then you will definitely love reading it for the first time. It follows a crochety old man who, despite having several opportunities in his life, turns away any sort of love and happiness. His love is for money and as Christmas approaches, he receives divine intervention in the form of 3 ghosts. These three ghosts will soon guide him to the right path of opening his heart and sharing it with those around him. Each ghost comes separately to reveal something of his past, present and future. The visuals can be a bit scary and the language may be harder to follow for young readers. The themes are definitely kid friendly and I believe there’s even been a family movie made of “A Christmas Carol” years ago that might be fun to check out.The more I read this the more I realize that it's been parodied and the themes have been borrowed in several of today's new movies and books. The self reflection that comes after reading this book will help you enjoy the holidays and appreciate the often overlooked things in life.

By Don Kidwell A tale I like to reread every year complete with several genuine illustrations that only add to the charm and at this price it can't be beat. Well done and I heartily recommend! No, it's not in a league with Bleak House (few novels are) but there's a reason it's a classic. So forget the movies -- well maybe not the one with Alistair Sims -- and read the book. Dickens is a delightful narrator and this edition features the original illustrations. Better yet, read it aloud to your family. And God bless us one and all.

By Nicole Laverdure I've just spent a beautiful hour reading, Briley of Crooked Creek, nicely written by MK McClintock, her 3rd story in the Crooked Creek series. I love this series so much, it's a real pleasure to meet this new heroine, Briley, a determine young woman! Her story starts, as Briley, a young Irish girl, arrives in Crooked Creek, to meet her future husband, only to discover, no one is there to meet her. She finds herself all alone in a small place set in the Montana territory. Enters, sheriff Peyton Sawyer to her rescue, by offering his help and friendship! Spending time knowing each other, will create a beautiful relationship. We meet again, her previous characters Hattie, Carson, Emma and Casey.I just love these shorts stories, set in the wilderness of Montana, they are very well written, and so refreshing with independent and brave women blended in western adventures set in post-Civil War Montana.I'll be watching, next, Clara's story. This short story really pleased me!* I received a copy of this novella in exchanged for an honest review*

I think that is a better description for Briley than the horse, but maybe both. It warms my heart to meet new Crooked Creek folks and learn their stories. Briley is instantly likeable, and Peyton gives off a warm, protective vibe. Their story has less action but it draws you in and connections are made between all of the Crooked Creek characters. Ms. McClintock also scatters Irish sentiments through out the story and paints a vivid picture of the Montana landscape. The next best thing to actually visiting Montana and Ireland is reading one of her books. The Crooked Creek stories wet my appetite just enough that I can't help but come back for more!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Okay but not as it seems. Never judge a book by it's cover. By Amazon Customer I gave this four stars because the writing is good and the stories are decent. However, this book was not exactly what I thought it would be. Most of the stories were re-tellings of the Salem witch trials (or so it seemed to me) and we're somewhat tedious to get through. This is not about magic users, per se. It is more a telling of superstition seeded with religious beliefs and the reaction of the mob mentality. In short, burn the witch!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Ok if cheap By Amazon Customer It is 25 different stories so some are great and I wanted more of that story or maybe a series. Others where space filler. I would not pay more than two bucks for this one but I will give it three stars because of some of the better stories.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. The best epic fantasy book I read this year By Aliette De Bodard Once the beloved captain of the King’s Black Wolves, Captain Kellas retired in disgrace and wants nothing more to do with court politics–but when the king summons him to his palace and involves him in a feud between his two wives, Kellas feels duty-bound to step in. Dannarah, the great-aunt of the current king, is a reeve, bonded to a giant eagle and entrusted with watching over the land; but all is not well in the reeves’ halls… Sarai is a member of a rich but distrusted minority; disgraced through her mother’s acts, she finds salvation in an arranged marriage. And Lifka is an outlander child, who should have been marked as a slave but instead found a beloved family–but unexpectedly finds herself drawn into the politics of the court…It’s hard to summarise Black Wolves, partly because it is a thick book; but also because it is so very, very dense. Elliott excels at worldbuilding, and the tangled skein of politics and religion she weaves in the book is absolutely masterful–this is a universe that feels lived-in and real, and not merely a prop for a war. Black Wolves tackles ideas of duty to one’s country and one’s king, and how far they can be separated–but it also deals, interestingly, with the past. The prologue, set 42 years before the main narration, seems at first an interesting if bewildering choice when the pace moves forward and a lot of the characters are lost; but it turns out to be an absolutely key piece of the book, as one of the major themes is change, and the moment of change–and the question of how much a kingdom has to change to face the future. The creeping influence of the Beltak religion is sometimes a bit caricatural (though there are plenty of other religions to offset this), but the court politics and the way they can trap even the king himself are wonderfully done. This is a book that concerns itself with people not always seen in epic fantasy: with women (and older women in particular, Dannarah and a few other characters being refreshing because they’re effortlessly competent and not inclined to give much thought to other people’s opinions); with older heroes (Kellas in particular), and with the influence people who aren’t of noble birth or of royal blood (or male) can have on the fate of a nation where men seem, at first glance, to hold most of the power (and are making plans to acquire even more of it). There are several wrenching twists as Elliott brings her narration home; a reminder that even the best laid plans can falter and fail on what seems like the most inconsequential of things–and an absolutely awesome ending that effortlessly turns everything that’s happened till then on its head and made me take a long, hard look at my own assumptions. Also, it has giant eagles. What are you waiting for?Recommended, and the best epic fantasy book I read this year

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Promising, fun beginning to a new epic fantasy series By E. Smiley Kate Elliott never fails me. She consistently writes fun, thoughtful, original fantasy, featuring diverse and interesting characters of both genders, and set in complex, textured worlds. This book is no exception. It must be said, however, that the beginnings of her series are consistently and painfully dull; I was about 200 pages into this one before it convinced me.Black Wolves is the first novel in a new epic fantasy series set in the world of the Hundred, which also featured in the Crossroads Trilogy. While I recommend reading that trilogy, because it is good, that is not necessary to understand this one. This book begins about 16 years after the end of Traitors’ Gate, but after 80 pages it jumps ahead another 44 years, and then the real story begins. As another reviewer aptly described it, this is modern epic fantasy, in the best sense: a story told on a large scale, but driven by characters rather than tropes.Note: this review will contain spoilers for the first half of the book, because as I said, the first 200 pages aren’t really worth talking about.Like most epic fantasy, this features several point-of-view characters, though it still feels focused, as the connections among characters quickly become clear. Dannarah is a blunt, opinionated reeve marshal (i.e. a leader who flies about on a giant eagle); she is of the royal family but has her own ideas about where the country should go, and at age 60, she’s not taking any nonsense. Kellas is a disgraced but skillful guard captain and longtime associate of Dannarah’s, and comes out of retirement to deal with a precarious situation at the palace. And Sarai is a cloistered but knowledgeable young woman who jumps at the chance of an arranged marriage to escape her outcast status at home. There are also a couple of secondary POVs: Gil, the bored and mischievous young nobleman whom Sarai marries, and Lifka, a young reeve of exotic origin.Once it gets going, the book has an engaging plot and is a quick read; there is a lot going on here, with a large cast of characters, a complex political story and plenty of unexpected plot twists. There’s a bit of magic (but not too much) and a bit of romance (but again, not too much – Gil and Sarai’s scenes never failed to put a smile on my face, though they’re a long shot from the melodramatic pronouncements that usually accompany fictional romance). There are villains, but this isn’t shaping up as your standard good-vs.-evil fantasy; instead of asking who is the rightful king, the book questions whether there ought to be a king at all. As always, progressive ideas inform Elliott’s writing; these books are set in a land influenced by Asian and Polynesian rather than European cultures, and the book treats its diverse cast of characters with respect. They are an interesting and well-developed bunch, and even those not in positions of power manage to take control of their situations in fresh and believable ways.In other words, this is just the sort of fantasy I want to read and wish more authors would write. Beyond the slow start, I have few criticisms: there is some overly expositional dialogue early on, and the book ends with little resolution. I want to know what happens next! Fortunately, Elliott writes at a good pace, so there shouldn’t be too long to wait.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Ignore the blurb's implication that this story centers around men By Heather Rose Jones It’s been a while since I got into a dense, multi-volume fantasy epic. I ventured this one on the promise of lots of prominent, varied female characters, and it delivered on that as promised. Black Wolves follows the intersecting lives of a handful of people entwined in a multi-generation period of intense political and social change for a region known as The Hundred, with repercussions on neighboring regions and cultures. There is a slight look-and-feel of Asia to this secondary world, but not in a direct fashion, and the multilayered differences between the many cultures that are portrayed evoke something that is clearly itself and nothing else. The scope of this epic becomes clear when “Part Two”, starting at chapter seven, lets us know that we are 44 years after the era of the opening chapters. A character who was a willful girl in the beginning is now a grizzled warrior, characters glimpsed at first have long since died, leaving us to deal with their grandchildren. I confess I had a bit of a “Wait...what?” moment. But it works, because the most dominant theme of the story is change. The sort of change that may be experienced over one lifetime, if the life is positioned just right, but that would be invisible on a year-to-year basis.A story with this scope can’t really be summed up in a short review. We have cultures in clash with pre-modern (no gunpowder) weapons and the threat, but only rarely the reality, of magical interventions. We have kings and emperors and dynastic manoevering. We see the slow but relentless hegemony of an invading religion, when that religion is intent on dominance and understands the importance of infiltrating all layers of society. We see how multiple people of good will and honor can end up supporting entirely differnt visions of what is best for the land and the future, and struggling with the conflict of personal and political bonds. And the women. Oh my, the women. As pure water after a long harsh desert of male-dominated epic fantasies. We even have a solid sprinkling of women romantically involved with each other, where those bonds are just one more complication in their eventual goals. If I had any minor disappointment in this book, it was that none of the characters utterly grabbed my heart and held it tightly. I liked them all, and want to see how they come to their eventual goals (or don’t). But the multi-focal nature of the cast made it a little hard to slip entirely inside any one head. You think you’re getting to know someone and then whoops you’re over there. It’s a function of the way the book is designed, so it isn’t exactly a flaw. But I’d like to have fallen head over heels in love with at least one of them.At any rate, if you want a new vision of what epic fantasy can be, Black Wolves is the start of something great. And it would make a truly awesome multi-season tv series. Just saying.

Trident Security operative, Jake Donovan, has been a member of the BDSM lifestyle since his teenage years. Starting as a submissive, he eventually became a Dom, but a brutal incident, years ago, changed Jake's life forever. Unable to shake the ghosts of his past, he's avoided giving his heart to anyone for sixteen years. Until Nick. Navy SEAL, Nick Sawyer, knew it was probably a bad idea to get involved with his brothers' friend and employee, but there was something about Jake that drew him in. While his brothers also owned a private BDSM club, The Covenant, Nick never understood what attracted people to the lifestyle. He had nothing against it, but it just wasn't for him. Until Jake. An old missing person's case has Jake running to rescue a teenage girl and Nick volunteers to watch his back. But when things go awry, Jake must confront his past, before he can ever think about a future...one that, hopefully, includes Nick. 18+ Adult Content. Topping the Alpha: Trident Security Series, by Samantha A. Cole

About the Author I am a retired policewoman and former paramedic who has started my third career as an author. I have lived in the suburbs of NYC all my life. I'm planning on becoming a 'snow-bird' soon and splitting my time between New York and Florida. My two dogs keep me company and remind their 'mom' to take a break from writing every once in a while and go for a walk, of course with them in tow. I've been an avid reader all my life and was often found with one or two books in my hand as a child (yes, I was reading two books at the same time!) After being gifted with a stack of romance novels from my grandmother, my love of the genre began in my teens and blossomed further in adulthood. I am continuing to work on the Trident Security series and also have a few stand-alone books planned as well

No passion in the sex and could not connect with the characters. Absurd plot line for the ostensible "action" scene. I'm sure all the 5 stars are from the author's m/f fans, but I'd bet those stories are the same formula. And get an editor or proofreader. It's "hollowed" cheeks during a BJ, not "hallowed". Something is "alluded" to, not "eluded". And its "discreet", not "discrete" in the context used.

The author does a great job of getting the reader up to speed on who all of the other characters are, and I think this could easily be read on its own.Nick is the youngest brother of the guys who run Trident Security, who also happen to be doms with their significant other subs. Nick is a Navy SEAL who is visiting the brothers while on vacation leave. He isn’t into the BDSM scene, though he does visit the club now and then. He has hopes of hooking up again with Jake, one of Trident’s operatives and with whom he hooked up on his last visit.Unfortunately, Jake has some issues that cause him to push Nick away, so he is a dick throughout much of the beginning of this story. He makes it clear there will not be another hookup and is pretty blatant about it. But, Nick isn’t an easy pushover, and he makes it a point to change Jake’s mind.In the meantime, Jake and the team are pulled into a case when a girl from Jake’s past calls for help. He had helped her escape her abusive father but hasn’t had contact since she basically went into the equivalent of witness protection. Nick opts to help since he’s in town anyway, and they then try to uncover evidence against the father while taking care of keeping the girl safe.I really enjoyed this. Jake and Nick were great together. Nick’s newness to the BDSM stuff was done very well, and everyone makes sure they are both on the same playing field. They have great chemistry, and it shows in the bedroom and out. Nick holds his own and never backs down. Those are just a few of the reasons I loved this book and why I don’t often read M/F anymore. The author did a great job with each aspect, and even tempted me to pick up the other books in this series. There are definitely more characters I would like to read more about.

Another GREAT story in the Trident Series By jessNboys I've followed Samantha Cole from the beginning and I have to say that her first MM book was a complete hit. I've been waiting not so patiently for Jake's story since he was on the plane with Angie and opened up about his sexuality, gave us a glimpse into his broken heart. So much of his story has been behind the scenes because Jake is quiet, laid back. When a girl he helped in the past is in danger, he doesn't hesitate to step up and fight for her safety. Even when it means putting himself and those he loves in harms way.Nick has known he was gay for a few years, but has kept it from his big brother Ian and the rest of their friends. He knows they are openminded, but still hesitates, doubts. One night isn't enough for Nick. Once he hears what Jake needs, it may be all he gets. The two have to find a way to meet in the middle, to find a happy medium that will satisfy them both without tearing their world apart.Topping the Alpha is full of laughter, love and danger. Nick and Jake have a connection that left my kindle smoking! I laughed through so much of this book! I laughed through much of the story. There were times when I needed to take a break because of the hurt & pain that Jake & Nick go through. Love is so much more than great sex and funny banter. Love hurts sometimes, as you make mistakes, get scared. It also means staying with it, taking chances, opening your heart. Topping the Alpha: Trident Security Series, by Samantha A. Cole

She's out of a job & money so now she has to resort to pawning her prized, family pendant. It's the last tie she has to her family but she needs to cover her rent & have a little extra for food so she can get a little time to get back on her feet & hopefully come back for it. The shop owner does what they do & she gets enough to hold her over but he also gives her hope that it will be waiting for her cause he doesn't believe anyone would want to buy it. Jo's described as wearing a hoodie & being pretty withdrawn & we come to find out there is a history of some anger issues. She tries to detract attention from herself, especially around guys, yet she seems to draw it in still. As she's fighting for herself against a group of guys harassing her, after leaving the shop, she's saved by a golden boy on a motorcycle. We find out a little later that golden boy is Cage McClure, son of a famous boxer & he himself is a MMA fighter. Before we find that out however, he comes back to help Jo cause the way she was fighting for herself against the guys harassing her piqued his interest. They part ways at the gym he was heading to for training and by that point Jo figures out there is something about him that she's drawn to, which surprises her. She notices the gym is hiring & grabs the paper as she heads across the way to the restaurant where her friend, Zero, works. We find out that there is a lot of hoopla around Cage at the gym but there is something in his past that seems to haunt him & is his MMA career. It also doesn't help that his dad doesn't really seem to give Cage much credit yet he is having the gym decked out with a new area for him to train for his matches & Cage isn't really enjoying all that attention.Jo & Zero hit it off from the start & have a special relationship. When they met Jo believed Zero was a woman. She quickly found out that Zero was a male but only because those were the cards he was dealt at birth & Zero decided (s)he would shuffle those & choose her own. From then on the 2 became close friends that were there for each other through the tough times. So when Zero notices that Jo actually has some interest in a guy, for the first time since they met, s(he) encourages Jo to go for it. During the day Zero dresses as a man for the restaurant but outside of that the full Diva comes out & participates in competitions, where there is a bit of a love interest that Zero really has no interest in.Jo ends up going back to the gym where she bumps into Cage again & they officially tell each other their names. Jo is aware of who Cage's father is but doesn't know anything about MMA or the gym for that matter, she just really needs a job & wants to be near Cage. He introduces her to Buster, the owner of the gym, & helps her get the job. There's some indication that Cage has more interest in Jo than just an attraction & that it's not something new for him. Jo finds herself actually enjoying the work at the gym & how it's toning her body. She is however uncomfortable with the fact that it gets too hot for her hoodies & the gym t-shirts are a little too snug for her liking. As time goes on Jo becomes more & more interested in the different parts of training & finds that it's a good outlet for the anger issues that she's had all her life. She gets encouragement from Cage & some of the others at the gym to continue. Cage & Jo become closer however there is another woman in the picture, Brittany. Jo finds out pretty quickly that Cage & Brittany are an item but doesn't think she'd ever have a chance with Cage herself so she deals with it. She later feels that there is some interest in her from Cage & she stumbles into some proof that Brittany is cheating on him but then she's surprised one day when she walks into the gym as Brittany & him are announcing to the press that they are engaged. The book ends with a cage match, an awkward & somewhat confusing/shocking hint of a reveal, some paparazzi flashes & you..... probably jonesing for the next one so that, "Did I just read that right?", moment that you are still waiting to be answered can be!
