11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. For me, this was one of the best novels Joe R. Lansdale has ever written! By Wayne C. Rogers When I first ordered Fender Lizards by Joe R. Lansdale from the publisher, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. But, being that Mr. Lansdale was writing the book, that old Zen saying popped into my mind: “Expect nothing.”Of course, that’s easier said than done.From the brief description of the novel, I knew this was the story of Dorothy “Dot” Sherman, a seventeen-year-old teenager who worked at the Dairy Bob in Marvel Creek, Texas. Dot was a waitress there, and she would roller skate out to the waiting vehicles with trays of food in her hands. Dot was also from the wrong side of the tracks. Her father had gone out for a pack of cigarettes one night and had never come back. So, her mother had to raise Dot, along with her older sister and younger brother on a minimum-wage salary.Okay, I suspected this book might be along the lines of Edge of Dark Water and All the Earth, Thrown to the Sky, but without the nasty villains like Skunk, or the bank robbers that didn’t mind hurting a bunch of kids. The question is my mind was whether or not I’d enjoy reading it. This is what the novel had going for it. The book was being written by the great Joe R. Lansdale, who could write anything he set his mind to. So, I ordered the hardcover on faith alone, trusting in Mr. Lansdale’s innate ability to tell a fantastic yarn, no matter what the genre.When I got the book in the mail, I promised myself I’d let it sit on the bookshelf while I finished some other projects. But, that’s like seeing a block of gold out of the corner of your eye, knowing if you cash it in, you’ll give the stores a world of hurting with your outrageous shopping spree. Anyway, my eyes kept darting back and forth to the book so I told myself I’d only read a few pages. I didn’t really think I’d enjoy the story, so what are a few pages in the giant scheme of things?Well, I read more than a few pages.In fact, I read the first four chapters that night, which was about twenty-eight pages. Not much, but more than I expected. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was already cooked like a goose. Like when a beautiful lady reels a man in without him having the slightest notion of what’s happening.The next night I read up to page eighty-three, or Chapter 16.I was now totally caught up in Dot’s story because it was about life and the heartaches that often accompany it, especially when you work a no-end job and barely have enough money to help your family out and to make ends meet. However, I don’t think I knew I was an actual fan of Dot’s until she took a two-by-four and whacked her older sister’s boyfriend in the back of the head for beating up on her sibling.That took a lot of courage and a lot of anger, which Dot had plenty of.So, how does Dot learn to channel this anger? What happens when an uncle (Elbert—one of the best characters in the novel) she didn’t even know she had, suddenly appears and begins to live in his van in the front yard? What does Dot do when she meets a handsome young man who reeks of money and comes from the other side of the tracks and shows an acute interest in wanting to date her? Even more, how can Dot change the course of her life and feel a sense of pride at who she is and where she’s going?Suffice it to say that Mr. Lansdale does his job with this story in getting you to care about Dot Sherman and her plight. You swiftly learn that every action has a reaction, and that life is often about how we choose to make it, rather than how it can actually be if we believe in ourselves and go for the gold.If you’re a Joe Lansdale fan, this book is a must for your collection. This isn’t like anything he’s written before, and it’s certainly a learning experience of the best kind. I found it impossible to walk away from this book without a sense of hope for my own future. Few authors can achieve a degree of writing that actually changes lives for the better, but Fender Lizards does. Once it’s over, you’ll want to know what happens next to Dot Sherman, her family, and the roller skating girls at Dairy Bobs. You’ll also want to take a look at your own life and see how to fix it so more happiness can enter through those cracks in the wall.Needless to say, this novel is highly recommended to those who are on their own journey of life and are ready to take a closer look at its ups and downs. Of course, the truth is that no matter what path you choose to take, it all ends up at the same destination given the element of time. Or, as Mr. Lansdale might say, “This is sure more fun than rolling down a hill with a bunch of armadillos.”

A Charming Coming Of Age Story By Stephen Vincent Kempton Just to correct and clarify one of the other erroneous reviews on Amazon, this is not a Hap & Leonard novel or part of that series. The only thing it shares with those books is the author and a rural setting.This novel is a stand alone novel about a plucky young girl, seventeen year old Dot Sherman. Dot works as roller skating car hop for local Dairy Queen knock off , The Dairy Bob.Dot has to come to terms with a few issues like abandonment and rage. She longs to break out of her Trailer Park life and find a better life.But along the way she must solve a few mysteries. Why did her father leave one day to get cigarettes and never return ? And who is this previously unknown Uncle that enters her life ?The book also depicts Dot's first exploration into the world of dating plus the formation of a roller derby team.I find it amazing that Joe Lansdale, writer of ultra violent Men's Adventures can write such a quiet and touching Novel.I read this Novel over the weekend amid reports of Terrorists attacks in Paris, and it was the perfect remedy to brighten my troubled mind in these scary times. I really hope more people discover this hidden little gem.My Highest Recommendation.

The passage at the end of chapter one "I'm going to pause here a moment while envy sets in on you." sounds so southern and authentic. It is beautifully developed and paced. It had heart for days. Dot (the MC) and her family? I think I taught them before they all dropped out of school.This is NOT a horror or crime novel (which is what most expect) it is a genuine slice of life or coming of age story. It is two days before Christmas and 70-80 degrees here. I was down - this book picked me up and shook me around. I felt BETTER after I read this book. Listening to the blues (according to science) makes you feel better. I think this book is the equivalence to that effect.This book should be a movie! Seriously, someone needs to find and make a film of this!
