For example the Doctor is the Fairy Godmother in the Cinderella story. I like that it is a good and sturdy hardcover book to be on display with my other books on my bookshelf. Just be aware when the seller says its 60 pages in the description that it is actually 261 pages with 15 stories.

By Katie Mock Fans of the Doctor Who Universe will love this. It doesn't always feature the Doctor does it feature people and creatures from that universe. I especially love trying to figure out what the original story is; it's not just fairy tales, there are stories in there other than Grimm's. I do not regret getting this.

It was great fun to read through the stories and think aha! I recognize this fairy tale. The author did a good job moving this out of Earth-centric to cosmological. Being a Whovian, it was quite delightful to see how the writer subtly worked in The Doctor when he appeared. His monsters were true to the way they were portrayed in the long running series. I will read this again. Glad it was given to me!

Fortune's Rocks: A Novel, by Anita Shreve

Amazon.com Review Hester Prynne never had it so good! The year is 1899, and Olympia Biddeford, the headstrong daughter of a Boston Brahmin family, has decided to test the limits of her cloistered world. Spending the summer at her father's New Hampshire estate, the teenage heroine of Fortune's Rocks is entranced with the visiting salon of artists, writers, and lawyers. She's especially captivated, however, by John Haskell, a charismatic physician who ministers to the blue-collar community in the nearby mill towns. This middle-aged Good Samaritan hires Olympia to assist him as a nurse, and their collaboration soon evolves into a fiery love affair. Alas, it's only a matter of weeks before this passionate exercise in managed care is exposed--with disastrous consequences for the young, impregnated heroine. Even her adoring father now considers her "an overplump sixteen-year-old girl whose judgment can no longer be trusted," and insists that she break off her relationship: "There is nothing more to be said on this subject," he says. She bites her lip to keep from crying out further. She holds the arms of her chair so tightly she later will have cramps in her fingers. She will refuse to obey him, she thinks. She will accept his implied challenge and set off on her own. But in the next moment, she asks herself: How will she be able to do that? Without her father's support, she cannot hope to survive. And if she herself does not survive, then a child cannot live." In the end, Anita Shreve's seventh novel is a polished, supremely entertaining variation on Wuthering Heights, with Olympia and Haskell sitting in for Catherine and Heathcliff. The author did some meticulous research for her New England background, which gives this study of one particular wayward woman some extra historical heft. Some readers may find the plot twists a bit pat. And despite Olympia's efforts to be an independent woman, she overcomes her trials largely as a result of her family's wealth and station, which takes the edge off Shreve's feminist message. Still, Fortune's Rocks is a romance in the classic sense of the word, and should be enjoyed as such, unless the reader is absolutely allergic to happy endings. --Ted Leventhal

From Publishers Weekly The time is the turn of the last century, the setting a rocky New Hampshire coastline resort area nicknamed "Fortune's Rocks." Olympia Biddeford, age 15, is walking the beach, feeling the first stirrings of her womanhood. The strong-willed daughter of an upstanding Boston couple, she soon "learns of desire" as she begins a passionate affair with a married writer, John Haskell, three times her age. From the moment they meet (he is a visiting friend of her father's), they experience a sexual sparkAOlympia feels "liquid" in his presence. Soon, they fall into sinful trysting. Shreve (The Pilot's Wife) serves up these opening events with breathless immediacy. Once the plot gets a chance to developAOlympia gets pregnant, gives up child, fights to get child backAit settles down considerably, turning into a modernized The Scarlet Letter, a tale of a woman attaining feminist independence by living outside her period's societal mores. Reading, Brown (of TV's The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd) clearly has the most fun at the beginning, where the story's real heat and flushed excitement pours out. Listeners, too, may grow colder as the plot loses its torrid, forbidden edge. Based on the 1999 Little, Brown hardcover. (Dec.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Since Shreve's last book (The Pilot's Wife) was an Oprah pick, she's sure to have a winner with this one. But even without Oprah's help, this book is not to be missed. Fortune's Rocks takes Shreve back to her forteAa literary novel set in a historical framework. It worked beautifully in The Weight of Water, and it does here as well. As the year 1899 moves toward 1900, Olympia Biddesford is a 15-year-old on the cusp of womanhood. Spending the summer with her family at Fortune's Rocks, a New Hampshire coastal community, she meets John Haskell, an esteemed friend of her father. Though John has a wife and four children, he and Olympia are instant soulmates. Their intense affair creates complete havoc in both of their lives. A few weeks of joy turn into years of pain and redemption, culminating in a tense, page-turning trial at the end of the book. Shreve's writing is just complex and meaty enough to portray the time period perfectly, and it's a beautifully told story. Order multiple copies, and put yourself on the holds list! This will fly off the shelves.-ABeth Gibbs, P.L. of Charlotte & Mecklenburg Cty., NC Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

When Good People Do Bad Things By A Customer As I began Anita Shreve's Fortune's Rocks, only to find that the novel's premise was the development and consequences of a turn of the century affair between a 41-year old man and a 15-year old girl, I thought "here we go again", a chick book filled with despicable male characters. After finishing The Pilot's Wife, Shreve's previous work, in which the pilot is found to have lived a secret life in another country, complete with second wife and family, my reaction was that the depth of such evil and deceit, while plausible in the plot of a novel, was a little fantastic for most to consider. And now in Fortune's Rocks, we face another quite improbable scenario. But I kept reading, almost helpless to stop. Anita Shreve is a fine storyteller and as a native of the New Hampshire coast, I am a sucker for novels set there. I think she does a fine job of getting it right. It was also easy to picture the fictitious textile mill town and its immigrant population just miles from the coast that plays a major role in the story. It was more than the landscape of Fortune's Rocks, however, that kept me hooked. A novel centered on an inappropriate and tragic affair is populated with very likable, even normal characters (save one, almost comically obsequious dweeb). And when these likable people step off the edge with disastrous consequences, readers, at least this one, ponder their own edges walked each day...maybe a secret friendship hidden from a spouse, or power exerted over an employee or family member that goes a little beyond appropriate, or a deceitful business relationship, or...? What is it that keeps most of us on the safe side of the edge? And how safe is that safe side?In Fortune's Rocks, Anita Shreve moves freely into this reader's discomfort zone, yet this move seems somehow non-intrusive. There seems to be a way out. Her characters seem to do all the right things after the catastrophic event. And should any of us fall off that edge, it may be too much to expect that almost everything turn out so right at the end. For life is not a novel.

It is apparent by the other reviews I have read of this book that I am in the minority, but I truly did not like this book. I constantly had to tell myself that this was a work of fiction as tried desperatly not to throw it across the room.My main problem with this book is the "love" between 15 year old Olympia and 41 year old John. This relationship is based purely on sex. There was nothing written to make the reader believe otherwise. It bothered me quite a bit that I was supposed to find both of these characters sympathetic and buy into their feelings for each other.Another aspect of the story that bothered me was the fact that Olympia continued to have her father's wealth to support her even during her self-imposed exile. She never had to work for anything, which I think detracted from the story.Shreve has always been a "hit or miss" author for me and this one was definetly a miss.

34 of 39 people found the following review helpful. a passionate story of love conquering all By Jen I absolutely loved Fortune's Rocks and I think it's one of Anita Shreve's best! However, every novel of hers that I've read thus far could be considered her best. I've read the Pilot's Wife, the Weight of Water, Strange Fits of Passion, and now Fortune's Rocks (in that order) and every story is so beautiful and every character so real that I find when I'm reading one of her novels, everything else is no longer a priority. I don't want to give anything away for anyone who is about to read this book so I'll just say that, as always, Anita Shreve has developed her characters so well that when I was finished with this book I was so sad that I could no longer be a part of their lives. I reccomend this book to any fans of Anita Shreve.

By Jana Merry I read book three of this love romance series a little over a week ago and loved it, so when I chanced upon book two being free, I grabbed it right away. Even though I didn’t feel the gap between the two when I read the last part first, I was curious about what happened in here. Mason and Gracie’s story was just as good as Becca and Kaillar’s. Lovely, happy endings for the two brothers. Now I feel like I really need to get book one soon. I read this series backwards, yes, but I don’t really care because I’m such a fan!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Sweet love story By Avid Reader I received this freebie in exchange for my honest review. This really is such a cute love story about real life and family drama, and love that may not make sense but ends up working none the less.Con and his brothers have all arrived in America from Ireland after losing first their father and recently their mother. Seeking more information about their mother's family they all settle in California. Con is a middle child in the family and truly struggling to find his way in the world when his mother had been the compass that kept him going before.Madlyn is a wedding planner with a stressfull schedule and an annoying ex that still lives with her. When she practically attacks Con on the beach insisting that he move his young surf class to another location so as not to ruin a brides photos a most unexpected relationship begins to develop and grow. But Madlyn is keeping secrets from Con that could destroy any chance of a future and although Con suspects what may be going on, try as he might to do everything right and give Maddie the time and space she needs, it doesn't seem to be enough.I love the sweet and juvenile yet responsible relationship Con develops with Jax. He is quickly finding that he can trust his own compass and that his easy going lifestyle may be just what this uptight, overworked bossy lady needs in her life as well as her son's.My only reason for giving this book 4/5 stars is because through the entire book we are never told how Con is able to afford all he does. It messed with my head a little considering he is much younger and comes across as a bit flighty. But knowing Verna DePaul's books as some of the best I've read and loving the first in this series I can't wait to read the next one.

While it can be read as a stand-alone, I highly recommend reading the series in order. DePaul does not spend a lot time rehashing the plot of the previous book, but you will definitely get a better sense of all of the brothers and the circumstances that have led them to this point in their lives. This book is Conor's story. For years, Conor has been a free-spirit that just moves wherever with whoever while still maintaining close family ties. Obviously this was a sore point with Conor's father and Conor always felt he was a disappointment in his eyes. However, that all changes during a chance meeting on the beach. Maddie is Conor's complete opposite. In her, however, Conor sees everything he could be and everything he wants out of life. But Maddie isn't quite in the same spot in her life. She is struggling with a career, ex-husband, and most importantly her young son. Can these two opposites really come together? This was a great contemporary romance and I look forward to seeing what is in store for the next O'Neill brother!ARC received in exchange for an honest review.

The Way Love Goes is middle brother Conor's story. All five brothers have been impacted by the death of their mother in different ways, for Con he's lost his compass. Con lost the person that gave him a sense of direction and has been floundering trying to gain his footing in the wake of it all. When he meets Madlyn he gets a glimpse of the man he can be and he begins to slowly find the happiness that his life has been missing. The issues arise when Con learns about the secrets behind Madlyn's abrupt departure. That's when he has to decide if he has what it takes to take on the responsibilities that come with falling in love. I received a copy of The Way Love Goes by Virna DePaul in exchange for an honest review. Con's story is one of personal growth. With this series she gives you a sense of family but she also allows you to healing of each brother as they found their own place in a new homeland.

I thought that there would be more drama or obstacles or angst--as have been in others in the series. This one was mainly happy with with a lot of love and sweetness--which is nice don't get me wrong--but it was funny the way the ending hit me. I was thinking "but when does the other shoe drop"? It seemed to kind of just end, happy and sudden. It's easy to infer the "ever after" part. None of the other series characters appear here; the idea is that this takes place at one of the several shifters/partners training schools that are in existence now. This makes sense to allow the series to continue, although I will miss our old friends. I definitely can't wait to continue the series.

He doesn't care what I say, he's marrying me It was supposed to be a hookup. That was all. But when you accidentally sleep with someone like Abell Birch, notorious billionaire player... Walking away isn't easy. He's perfectly gorgeous, perfectly filthy. Tattoos cover every inch of his muscles, his eyes can burn right through you, and his lips know just where to kiss. A real complete package. The exact kind of manwhore I hate. So when my parents pulled out that marriage contract, I thought they were joking. Marry him? I don't care how loud he made me beg that one night we spent together. I never want to see his sinful smile again. But if I don't marry him, I'll lose everything. It's pure blackmail. Either way, he doesn't care what I want. Because he plans to put that ring on my finger... To make me belong to him... No matter what I say. Standalone novel with a HEA, no cliffhangers here! Also contains a copy of the bestselling novel, Last of the Bad Boys, for a LIMITED TIME!

By Olivia Fox As per usual, Nora brings us an awesome book with hilarious characters and off-the-charts sex.Abell was sooo yummy, I just want him all to myself. Being the son of a millionaire has made him spoiled but when he meets Nix, drinking and random sex doesn't have the same appeal anymore. There's just one tiny little detail, their parents have signed a contract in which it is stated that they will be married and have a child within the first year or Nix's family company is going to be absorbed by Mr. Birch's company (Abel's father).Nix is no pushover, she has been dreaming about being the CEO of her family's company since she can remember. Even though she doesn't have a close relationship with her parents, she wants to save the company and create a good place to be for her half-brother Gram, who is treated like a pariah. With a sizzling chemistry, Nix and Abell have to navigate confusing business deals and lying parents; but what happens when they start to fall for each other?

If an author isn't familiar with a geographic area, there's a great thing called "Google". People in NYC don't call the subway the "Metro". That's a DC thing. There's no "Main Street" or "Cordova Street" in NYC. No 23 year old is about to become a CEO of a huge financial company. Part of Nix's frustration in the beginning of the book is that she gave up everything for her job and worked crazy hours and dedicated everything for years to her job. However, she's 23. How many years could she have dedicated? 2 after college? How much responsibility would a marketing professional have at the age of 23, even assuming she interned during college? This book was basically just an excuse to write one sex scene after another with some immature dialogue thrown in to mix it up a bit.

Sexy, ripped, tattooed and stinking rich Abell was every girls dream and nightmare all rolled into one. He would bed anything that moved just to help forget his very sad childhood. The story that brought Abell to leave his family at 16 was heart breaking. Then we have the very curvy, fiery redhead Nix who grew up running a family company that was worth millions. You would think that she could want for nothing but with brutal parents who didn’t lift a hand to her physically but she had a mother who did justice to the term verbal abuse, she had grown up without any real love and support. It was amazing that she turned into the caring person she was. After Nix was stood up on a date while at an outdoor rock concert she heard a girl in trouble and didn’t think twice about going to help this other girl even with the big guy who was trying to rape her. Abell was at this same concert picking up yet another girl to bed when on his way to get beer for her he seen the commotion and took it upon himself to help these girls out. Yep, he may have been a manwhore but he was a hidden knight in shining armor. This is the first meeting of Abell and Nix and after hooking up that night the next day’s meeting blew everyone away when they came face to face at a meeting that their parents had arranged for them. You would not believe what these crazy parents wanted these two to do. It was because of this arrangement that Nix would bring out the best in Abell whether he wanted her to or not. And Abell would show Nix how beautiful she actually was.So if you have looking for a quick hot read this is a great book full of some very, very erotic scenes. (noticed I said “very” twice…wink, wink) I loved the way the best was brought out in the best of these two lost souls who did not have any idea what being loved by a parent was all about but yet were able to realize love when it bit them in the a**. The question was if they were willing to put themselves out there for the hurt that they knew was a very real thing. This book was provided as an ARC by the author for an honest review.

I do not watch GoT, so....yeah.I saw this book right after I read The Troll Whisperer, so I grabbed it. It was a little different. Full of talk of wedding curses (from Oscar's family). Then there were tons of GoT references, which I already mentioned. Finally, Noah's sister is a guest and she brings the BOOM to the wedding. Just when it seems that this fiasco is about to get worse, things end up working out okay, as you would expect from basically an extended epilogue. It wasn't expensive and it didn't take long to read.

The story catches you up in their lives as well as family and friends. The suspenseful part is whether there is really a curse in Oscar's family involving weddings. There is dark humor, lots of love, conflict and angst in the story and it is wrapped up in only a few pages. Definitely a short story, but leaves nothing out including a satisfying conclusion. I hope you all enjoy this story as much as I did.

They are certainly a unique pair and I want a copy of that picture of them by the fountain. I can visualize it all and my family has the same wedding curse that is why me and my husband did a really small thing when we got married. Although because we did not do the big event we paid for it anyhow so I guess you could say we had a pink wedding also. Loved it and recommend it to anyone. Joe
