Action packed thrill ride that reads like an episode of 24 By NLA Cold Shot isn't the first book written about Iranian nuclear weapons and given world affairs it is safe to say it won't be the last. But where other books focus on political drama on the world stage, Cold Shot takes us to a more focused and personal story about a handful of dedicated CIA operatives and their handlers.Minor plot spoilers ahead:After what can only be called a slip up by an arrogant foreign service agent, the US intelligence community becomes aware of a ship sailing the ocean blue with an unknown destination and unknown intentions. After hunting the ship down at a port in the western hemisphere, a lone CIA agent must penetrate the dockyard and find out the ship's secrets. What she discovers is little short of shocking and has the potential of changing the world in tremendous ways. With the secret out, the agent and her partner must find a way to safely rid the world of this new found threat and do so with minimal life lost, especially their own. With the help of powerful and loyal friends back home, the agents fight tooth and nail against an enemy bent of shifting world power. Some will win and some will lose. Lives will be saved and lives will be lost. Will our heroes save the day?Characters:The most thrilling aspect of this book would have to be in the characters. I cannot tell you how refreshing it is to see a strong female character knee deep in events and storylines that are usually constructed for their male counterparts. And even though there is a male character that rushes in to help the female character out in a time of great danger, the author doesn't fall back on the stereotypical damsel in distress mold that so many other authors resort to. Here in Cold Shot we are not only exposed to one great female lead but three, as station chiefs and agency leaders are just as determined to see things right with estrogen as a male would have been with endless bravado and testosterone.Setting:Although the book is one that could easily be set on a worldwide stage with ally nations and axises of evil taking up page after page with political bickering and power plays, the book does well to offer a much more focused setting. With the exception of a few times when the story calls for a larger cast of nations, the book stays focused on two countries and a half dozen locals. This more focused telling offers more to the fast paced nature of the book and does wonders to push the story forward at an incredible pace.Writing:Like I said in the title of this review, the book does read a lot like an episode of 24. With the story bridging a time frame of about ten days, the book clips along at a fast pace and the writing does little to get in the way. Written with language easy to digest, the reader will not have to trudge through endless agency acronyms and yawn inspiring in-depth character stories that have little or no effect on the larger picture. Cold Shot is the type of book that you can carry on the plane and lose yourself in only to find that you've reached your destination far before you realize it.Conclusion:With fast paced drama, great characters able to hold their own without being dumbed down, plenty of heroes to root for, and writing that can keep you hooked from page one, there is little to complain about here. My recommendation is that if you are looking for a fun, witty, and compelling book to tear apart in short order, then this is a good book to pick. Nothing here to report as a negative so this one gets five stars, a rare rating from me.*I received this in exchange for an honest review.

A splendid detailed journey into the intelligence world By Roslyn Abell I received a free advance copy from the publisher per my request as Henshaw is an exciting writer to read.Mark Henshaw's Cold Shot is a page turning thriller that takes the reader behind the scenes of the US intelligence services. It is a splendidly detailed journey into the intelligence world that only a true insider could create. The realism of his writing is probably related to his history as a decorated CIA analyst with more than eleven years of service.Kyra Stryker and Jonathan Burke work as a special team, Red Cell, housed at the CIA. Their special abilities are used to solve the incongruities that other analysts find impossible. Their new adventure begins with a dead Somali pirate found in a lifeboat in the open waters. His body shows signs of torture, which immediately raise questions in the analyst's mind of his importance. They trace the dead man back to an Iranian ship bound for Venezuela.Kyra sets off to Venezuela under cover to gather more intelligence. Her transmissions of pictures of several dying crewmembers strongly confirm that the ship appears to have dangerous, radioactive cargo on board. Further more in one of the pictures the scientist who heads Iran's nuclear program is clearly seen. The evidence strongly suggests that the Iranians are building a nuclear bomb in politically unstable Venezuela to elude the UN's inspections. Jonathan immediately sets off to cover Kyra's back.The interesting element of this thriller is that not only is the reader led into the oversea offices of the CIA, but also the domestic political arena of the President. Jon and Stryker must thwart the enemy's tactics and also contend with the political decisions made by the higher ranks of our government whose main interest is to stay in powerAlice Cooke the head of the CIA an appointee of the previous president. She now serves at the pleasure of the presiding President, who is too afraid of her connections on the hill to dismiss her without reason. So he sets up an impossible assignment to see her fail, indifferent to the fact that his decisions will prove to be life threatening to the field agents.Jonathan Burke is an unusual man. In this book the author reveals that Jonathan was once a field officer and knows his way around guns and escaping getting caught. He also rounds out Jon's character hinting at something going on with Alice Cooke the head of CIA.Cold Shot is terrific reading entertainment. Henshaw's excellent writing skills bring to life his experiences and knowledge of the world of intelligence. The descriptions of the various military weapons, planes and ships, create a tense and plausible background for his well thought out plot. Jon and Kyra do get into intense and dangerous trouble avoiding being killed several times by the Iranians and the actions of the President, but with great logistic plotting they evade the enemy.Henshaw's skill at dialogue provides insight and humor to tense situations.Some of my favorite excerpts are:"Higher rank and education too often crowd out commonsense.""An intelligence officer who isn't afraid of the dark is in the wrong business." "Men who are always lying, don't recognize the truth when it is told to them."I read this book during the search for Malaysia flight MH370 and during the second round of the Benghazi hearings, gaining a better ability to read between the lines and the absence of facts revealed.

Long-awaited, and very welcome By Brian Baker It's been a little over two years since Henshaw's powerful debut with the novel "Red Cell", and he's followed up with an equally entertaining sequel in "Cold Shot".The cast from the original novel is back, this time dealing with a conspiracy between Iran and Venezuela to import WMDs into this hemisphere.Kyra Stryker, Jon Burke, Kathy Cooke and the rest of the Red Cell cast are all here, and facing a crisis with vast international implications and ramifications.Part Vince Flynn, part early Tom Clancy, Henshaw skillfully weaves the intricacies of intelligence and military operations with the uber-politics of an inept President - a man scornful of his underlings in the military and intelligence communities - who doesn't want to grasp the import of the crisis that faces not only himself, but the national and international communities as a whole.The plot is engrossing and well played. The characterizations, not only of the series regulars but also the antagonists and peripherals, are fully three-dimensional; these people are fully believable and engaging. The pacing is superb: tense as required, suspenseful, and with a satisfying conclusion.I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and hope the wait for the next installment isn't as long as it was for this one.
