Good Reading By LAS Reviewer It’s not wise to tease a wolf and running from one will surely get you chased.Told in first person POV, Luring the Pack wasn’t the typical shifter-finds-mate type paranormal I’m used to. Truly, I would be hard pressed to call this erotic romance, at least in the beginning. There was really little to no romance, especially throughout the first half of the book. The heroine has such mixed feelings for the shifters. Lust certainly. Curiosity, sure. Fear, definitely lots of that. There are more romantic feelings between the group towards the end but the lust seems to stay in the forefront.This book pushes the line on nearly being monster erotica. Not because there’s sex in partial or full animal form, or at least none that reaches fruition. It just had a dark gritty feeling about it. Young half naked woman running from a pack of wolves, knowing and accepting that the end of the chase means an orgy had a lot to do with that perception. Also, more than once Emmalina ends up on the ground and covered in mud. Or maybe it was her circumstances. Her house seems to be in disrepair, the car doesn’t drive well, she has to ride a rickety bike, she’s hungry, the trailer she rents to Judson and Dane is a wreck, and she works at a dead end job at the local diner. I waffled back and forth on not understanding her reasoning for making certain decisions and then trying to cut her some slack because she’d been through a lot of bad in a really short time.This book took me out of my comfort zone and maybe that’s a good thing every once in a while. I’ve read plenty of fated-mate type books and many fall into specific pattern I’ve come to expect. This ones different but then it also slowly moved more towards traditional. Her mates, including the Alpha, are fiercely protective and jealous of anyone touching her other than themselves. I did like her mates even though they were a little too pat. The Alpha (a doctor), plus two more wolves (a lawyer and a psychiatrist) who could both vie for beta and then there’s Judson, he’s something special that I won’t reveal, but that was truly different and unexpected.Readers who like to go for something a little different, who don’t mind a little harshness or grittiness to their erotic paranormal stories may find this one entertaining. It’s not just sex scene after sex scene, those don’t even start until later in the story, but there is lots of teasing build up that made the first serious kisses pretty hot. When they all decide it’s time to claim their mate, watch out, that’s a lot of body parts and it’s a good thing this girl has stamina and plenty of time to really think about how bad she wants this and them.The men for the most part are actually pretty kind and considerate. Judson has a truly heart tugging back story and then, as often happens in packs, there’s a power struggle that endeared the Alpha to me. Dane and Edward were just extra sexy man/wolf candy but I didn’t have a problem with them being a part of this, either. There’s also a whole side story to do with Emmalina’s sister that feels kind of clunky and unnecessary to the story but maybe the author plans to use it as a jumping off point for another book. That could be interesting.This isn’t a terribly long read but it was thankfully long enough that it didn’t feel like it was completely centered around sex. The power struggle I mentioned was well written with some pretty dramatic scenes. Overall a eye opening read that’s sure to find an audience.originally posted at long and short reviews

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A fantasy for the heart. By An Avid Reader While this is not my favorite genre, I have to say this has become one of my favorite stories. While it takes place in a fantasy shifter world, it is about an all-too-real societal problem -- illegal drug trade and its effects on families. At the same time it's an infinitely lovely story about five people, Emmalina, who is trying to hold her family and home together, and four shifters, three wolves and one saber-tooth tiger, who all love her. It's fast-paced, action-packed, and a delightful romance wrapped up in a beautifully-written package that will entertain you from beginning to end.

That the case between Sierra Jagger. The time he spends for this one summer before the wedding between her Mom and his Mentor, he is determined to stay away from Sierra at first. But that changes and the teasing starts. But things do heat up for them for a brief time and then he’s gone into the military. And Sierra can’t stand the loss now that Jagger is gone from her. But is he gone for good? Every five years he had always shown back up into her life and five years later she’s got a glimmer of hope but she doesn’t know why because she believes him to be dead. Well written and very hot in some areas and emotional in others. Truly enjoyed reading this well written self contained story.

I'm glad Veronica Daye doesn't tease the readers and delivers a really hot and steamy romance story. But, and this is a great 'but', as a reader I wanted to spend some more time with Jagger and Sierra. I wanted to lose myself reading more about the time they spend together and even how they spent their time apart. I just would have loved for there to have been more about these characters that Veronica describes and wrote about so well!

I mean ten years is a long time, but as I kept reading I got really, really confused. I mean this is basically incest without actual sex. Very weird and definitely not your average love story.

By Jie Yang The book was really interesting and the characters were great too, but this is sort of like another book that Melanie wrote. It's called, " I Remember You". It has a very similar storyline. In that book, a girl called Raine finally sees her long lost childhood friend, Kyle. I think he was also abducted or something. I like the idea but I just wish she wouldn't use the idea again because it seems repetitive for the people who has read the the other book.

Action packed thrill ride that reads like an episode of 24 By NLA Cold Shot isn't the first book written about Iranian nuclear weapons and given world affairs it is safe to say it won't be the last. But where other books focus on political drama on the world stage, Cold Shot takes us to a more focused and personal story about a handful of dedicated CIA operatives and their handlers.Minor plot spoilers ahead:After what can only be called a slip up by an arrogant foreign service agent, the US intelligence community becomes aware of a ship sailing the ocean blue with an unknown destination and unknown intentions. After hunting the ship down at a port in the western hemisphere, a lone CIA agent must penetrate the dockyard and find out the ship's secrets. What she discovers is little short of shocking and has the potential of changing the world in tremendous ways. With the secret out, the agent and her partner must find a way to safely rid the world of this new found threat and do so with minimal life lost, especially their own. With the help of powerful and loyal friends back home, the agents fight tooth and nail against an enemy bent of shifting world power. Some will win and some will lose. Lives will be saved and lives will be lost. Will our heroes save the day?Characters:The most thrilling aspect of this book would have to be in the characters. I cannot tell you how refreshing it is to see a strong female character knee deep in events and storylines that are usually constructed for their male counterparts. And even though there is a male character that rushes in to help the female character out in a time of great danger, the author doesn't fall back on the stereotypical damsel in distress mold that so many other authors resort to. Here in Cold Shot we are not only exposed to one great female lead but three, as station chiefs and agency leaders are just as determined to see things right with estrogen as a male would have been with endless bravado and testosterone.Setting:Although the book is one that could easily be set on a worldwide stage with ally nations and axises of evil taking up page after page with political bickering and power plays, the book does well to offer a much more focused setting. With the exception of a few times when the story calls for a larger cast of nations, the book stays focused on two countries and a half dozen locals. This more focused telling offers more to the fast paced nature of the book and does wonders to push the story forward at an incredible pace.Writing:Like I said in the title of this review, the book does read a lot like an episode of 24. With the story bridging a time frame of about ten days, the book clips along at a fast pace and the writing does little to get in the way. Written with language easy to digest, the reader will not have to trudge through endless agency acronyms and yawn inspiring in-depth character stories that have little or no effect on the larger picture. Cold Shot is the type of book that you can carry on the plane and lose yourself in only to find that you've reached your destination far before you realize it.Conclusion:With fast paced drama, great characters able to hold their own without being dumbed down, plenty of heroes to root for, and writing that can keep you hooked from page one, there is little to complain about here. My recommendation is that if you are looking for a fun, witty, and compelling book to tear apart in short order, then this is a good book to pick. Nothing here to report as a negative so this one gets five stars, a rare rating from me.*I received this in exchange for an honest review.

A splendid detailed journey into the intelligence world By Roslyn Abell I received a free advance copy from the publisher per my request as Henshaw is an exciting writer to read.Mark Henshaw's Cold Shot is a page turning thriller that takes the reader behind the scenes of the US intelligence services. It is a splendidly detailed journey into the intelligence world that only a true insider could create. The realism of his writing is probably related to his history as a decorated CIA analyst with more than eleven years of service.Kyra Stryker and Jonathan Burke work as a special team, Red Cell, housed at the CIA. Their special abilities are used to solve the incongruities that other analysts find impossible. Their new adventure begins with a dead Somali pirate found in a lifeboat in the open waters. His body shows signs of torture, which immediately raise questions in the analyst's mind of his importance. They trace the dead man back to an Iranian ship bound for Venezuela.Kyra sets off to Venezuela under cover to gather more intelligence. Her transmissions of pictures of several dying crewmembers strongly confirm that the ship appears to have dangerous, radioactive cargo on board. Further more in one of the pictures the scientist who heads Iran's nuclear program is clearly seen. The evidence strongly suggests that the Iranians are building a nuclear bomb in politically unstable Venezuela to elude the UN's inspections. Jonathan immediately sets off to cover Kyra's back.The interesting element of this thriller is that not only is the reader led into the oversea offices of the CIA, but also the domestic political arena of the President. Jon and Stryker must thwart the enemy's tactics and also contend with the political decisions made by the higher ranks of our government whose main interest is to stay in powerAlice Cooke the head of the CIA an appointee of the previous president. She now serves at the pleasure of the presiding President, who is too afraid of her connections on the hill to dismiss her without reason. So he sets up an impossible assignment to see her fail, indifferent to the fact that his decisions will prove to be life threatening to the field agents.Jonathan Burke is an unusual man. In this book the author reveals that Jonathan was once a field officer and knows his way around guns and escaping getting caught. He also rounds out Jon's character hinting at something going on with Alice Cooke the head of CIA.Cold Shot is terrific reading entertainment. Henshaw's excellent writing skills bring to life his experiences and knowledge of the world of intelligence. The descriptions of the various military weapons, planes and ships, create a tense and plausible background for his well thought out plot. Jon and Kyra do get into intense and dangerous trouble avoiding being killed several times by the Iranians and the actions of the President, but with great logistic plotting they evade the enemy.Henshaw's skill at dialogue provides insight and humor to tense situations.Some of my favorite excerpts are:"Higher rank and education too often crowd out commonsense.""An intelligence officer who isn't afraid of the dark is in the wrong business." "Men who are always lying, don't recognize the truth when it is told to them."I read this book during the search for Malaysia flight MH370 and during the second round of the Benghazi hearings, gaining a better ability to read between the lines and the absence of facts revealed.

Long-awaited, and very welcome By Brian Baker It's been a little over two years since Henshaw's powerful debut with the novel "Red Cell", and he's followed up with an equally entertaining sequel in "Cold Shot".The cast from the original novel is back, this time dealing with a conspiracy between Iran and Venezuela to import WMDs into this hemisphere.Kyra Stryker, Jon Burke, Kathy Cooke and the rest of the Red Cell cast are all here, and facing a crisis with vast international implications and ramifications.Part Vince Flynn, part early Tom Clancy, Henshaw skillfully weaves the intricacies of intelligence and military operations with the uber-politics of an inept President - a man scornful of his underlings in the military and intelligence communities - who doesn't want to grasp the import of the crisis that faces not only himself, but the national and international communities as a whole.The plot is engrossing and well played. The characterizations, not only of the series regulars but also the antagonists and peripherals, are fully three-dimensional; these people are fully believable and engaging. The pacing is superb: tense as required, suspenseful, and with a satisfying conclusion.I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and hope the wait for the next installment isn't as long as it was for this one.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Unique writing style By ana simons I read True Born after reading The Last Earl. True Born is supposed to be the first in a trilogy, but there is a big time difference (100 years) between the two stories, so you can really read the books in any order.There is the distinct flavor of the 18th century, and a story of love that begins strong right out of the gate. John Crawford is the bastard son of the Earl of Halford, with a half brother who hates him and desires the woman he loves. John leaves for war and you can guess the rest…Except that there are twists and turns, great passion, humor and some pretty great characters once more. The Last Earl kept characters to a minimum and True Born has more of them, each with a distinctive voice and psychology.The love between John and Georgiana finds a lot of obstacles, and I won’t give the end away here, because we are kept wondering and reading.Lara Blunte masters a unique writing style that impacts and keeps the reader hooked right up until the end. Highly recommended!

By KristinJ What I really love about Lara's writing is that she captures the depth of both dark and light emotions. Her characters feel honest, whether they are joyful or jealous, hopeful or hateful they feel real. I find stories more interesting when characters are led into situations because they are being true to their natures rather than through happenstance or stupidity. I loved the protagonists, Georgiana and John, eagerly following the ups and downs of their relationship. However, I have to say one of the most interesting characters in the story to me was Hester. I didn't know what to think of her when she was introduced, but ended up with a grudging admiration at the end. Her character could have ended up cartoonish, but instead it was an interesting psychological look into obsession. I highly recommend Lara's books if you are looking for a different perspective in historical romance novels.

True Born is a shorter book, but it's also full of surprises and fantastic characters. Nobody here is completely good: John struggles believably with a terrible temper -- Georgiana can't help loving John in the face of the man she married. But no one is totally evil either, and that's what I liked about the book: in the struggle of the "bad" people against their own nature. It's made clear that they wish they could be different, or that they secretly regret some of the things they do.It's a good look at human nature with great settings and knowledge of the period.
