Madeline Roberts comes from a powerful, yet highly dysfunctional family. She has spent almost all of her twenty two years living under their critical microscope and has endured a lifetime of emotional abuse. At one low point, she attempted to take her own life. After this suicide attempt, Madeline meets her maternal grandmother for the first time. Through this connection, Madeline was given the opportunity to spread her wings and for the first time in her life, be independent. Madeline finds herself in a charming Colorado town called Touchstone where she meets Knox Barrows. He too is recovering from wounds, but his are of a more physical variety. After college Knox joined the army where he served two tours of duty in Iraq. During his third deployment he was injured by an IED and suffered trauma to his brain that has caused substantial vision loss. Even though Knox’s injury is significant, he is able to return to the job he loves; a builder and restorer of fine furniture. He’s managed to patch his life back together and stoically shoulder whatever trials come his way. Maddie and Knox meet and embark on a sweet romance, but it’s not long before the issues that they’ve both buried rise to the surface and refuse to be ignored. The baggage they carry is significant and they both must decide if they are brave enough to be truly honest about who they are and who they will become.

I need to give it another couple reads to be sure :) If you're on the fence about whether to read this book or not, I can promise, you won't be disappointed. The author has incredible insight into who her characters are and leaves few details to the imagination in describing them.Maddie and Knox and simply awesome characters. I found myself unable to stop reading once I started. I was rooting for Maddie and Knox from the moment they met, well, actually before they met. Their instant connection is one that is rarely seen today. Through all the challenges they each face they fight the attraction they share, it brings to question if they can make it through all the challenges to be together or not.I can't wait to see if the author gives us more of these characters. I feel as if they are real, that I can simply reach through the book and be with them. The feelings, raw emotions, and situations are realistic, making me want to know even more about the characters and how they would react and interact in other circumstances.

And I’m glad I bought because it did not disappoint Read it all in close to three days, being very happily surprised by the author’s craft. I found myself rooting for Madeline and Knox, two beautiful souls trying to put their lives in order after much suffering. The characters are well-rounded and the trials and tribulations they’re having seem very real; it’s easy for anyone regardless of self-history to empathize. All in all,it’s a very sweet book that will fill your heart with love.

Good premise but lukewarm chemistry By Stephanie Fournet Seaglass by Chris Bridges is a love story about two people taking the long way on their road to happily-ever-after. The story’s premise about Knox, an injured Iraq War vet, and Maddie, a young woman who carries her own scars, intrigued me immediately, but after a promising start, the novel loses some steam almost as soon as the characters’ feelings are acknowledged. Both seem to become stuck on a loop, making the same choices and saying virtually the same lines over and over. Knox’s head injury has left him with failing vision, and he resists seeking help and accepting life--for all intents and purposes--as a blind man. Maddie, the survivor of an abusive childhood, can’t stand firm against the pull of her dysfunctional family, and she chooses them over her own happiness countless times—without any really compelling rationale as to why.As far as the plot goes, the bones are good, but Bridges makes some rookie mistakes that leave the reader struggling to hang in there and see it through. Most problematic is the magnetism between the characters. At several points, the lovers seem to suffer from a lack of feeling, which the reader can only echo. There were times when I felt I wanted Maddie and Knox to get together far more than they did. The two could have traveled the same rough road with a lot more feeling and longing and a lot less listlessness. Another obstacle is the copy editing. Typos, missing words, grammar errors, clichés, and random tense switches pull the reader out of the narrative too often. All in all, there are some wonderful moments in this novel, and I suspect that Ms. Bridges’ future efforts will have more to offer as she polishes her craft.

“A tale of murder and intrigue that will ensnare knitters and non-knitters alike. I couldn’t put it down.”—Barbara Ross, author of Musseled OutTime has not been kind to sleepy Dorset Falls, Connecticut, where an erstwhile resident is hoping to bring a tattered yarn shop back to life—but with a murderer on the loose, the whole town is in knots…   Josie Blair left Dorset Falls twelve years ago in hopes of making it big in New York City. But after earning an overpriced master’s degree and getting fired by a temperamental designer, she finds herself heading back to her hometown. Her great-uncle was injured in a car accident, and newly unemployed Josie is the only person available to take care of him. Uncle Eb’s wife didn’t survive the crash, so Josie is also tasked with selling the contents of her Aunt Cora’s yarn shop. But the needling ladies of the Charity Knitters Association pose a far bigger challenge than a shop full of scattered skeins…   Miss Marple Knits is one of the few businesses still open in the dreary downtown. Josie can’t imagine how it stayed open for so long, yet something about the cozy, resilient little shop appeals to her. But when one of the town’s most persnickety knitters turns up dead in a pile of cashmere yarn, Josie realizes there’s something truly twisted lurking beneath the town’s decaying façade…   INCLUDES ORIGINAL KNITTING PATTERNS!

I could not put this book down. There were times while reading that I was laughing out loud. Her characters are so relatable. I have even known a few people like some of them, especially Uncle Eb. He had me in stitches with his one liners and no nonsense attitude. He is so set in his ways that he just tells it like it is and doesn't care. Between he and his dog Jethro you will be laughing too.Josie and her mom are having a discussion on her having to go take care of Uncle Eb. He was in a car accident that claimed the life of his wife Cora. He ended up with only a broken leg. Josie ends up going to Dorset Falls, Connecticut to try and help her grumpy uncle till her mom gets back from her Mediterranean cruise. She loaded her Saab with her cat Coco and left her job and life as she knew it in New York as a fashion designer for country living for a few weeks. Not only does she have to take care of Eb, she learns she has farm chores too. If you can imagine a city girl in a chicken coop you will be laughing so hard you will cry.She also has to go through Cora's business Miss Marple Knits to inventory and close the doors. What she wasn't expecting was the tug at her heart when she walked through the doors. She is shocked at how at home she feels. When she returns the next day to dig in she is shocked to find a Knitting Association person dead in the back room in a pile of Cashmere yarn. What the heck is going on in this sleepy town??? She finds out that not a lot has changed since she was a resident 12 years ago. Things like an ex boyfriend still living in town married to a jealous women, and his mother who wishes she and Josie didn't breath the same air. And of course the small town everyone knows everyone's business. Gossip spreads like wildfire. She gets caught up in the mystery of why this women is dead and why in the store? And does it all connect somehow? This is a great start to a new series. You gotta love a book that not only has twists and turns left and right and mystery but has knitters! I can't wait for the next book to see what happens next in Dorset Falls.

I can't wait for the next one to come out. I will pre-order as soon as it's available. Josie finds herself leaving her fashion design job in New York to go take care of her Uncle Eb who has been in a car accident that killed his wife, Cora, and broke his leg. Josie begins to clean out Cora's knitting shop and meets an interesting cast of characters. Her first discovery is one of the local knitting group members dead in the storeroom of the shop. With many twists and turns, a little love interest sprinkled in there, and a great ending, this is one of my favorite reads in a long time. You will find yourself smiling with the perfectly described imagery of a touching scene or a subtle romantic gesture. Also, loved the morning-borning room. Laughed every time.

Her Uncle Eb broke his leg in a car accident that killed his wife and he cannot get around on his farm or close up the yarn shop Miss Marple's (love that name) with his broken leg.Josie learns to gather eggs (and I must say her experience was much more pleasant than the times I did it as a child on my grandparent's farm, the hens were not so nice as to just walk away from the eggs), fix meals for someone who doesn't cook, and begins to take inventory at the yarn shop. The first day in the shop doesn't go so well as she is overrun with knitters who assume that she will either sell the shop to them or give the yarn to the charity knitting group. The second day is even worse as she finds one of the women who wants to buy the shop in the back stock room dead, murdered. With no visible means of getting into the shop.Josie is perplexed by two of the nicest of the knitters that keep disappearing into the building across the street, which appears to be vacant. She is not sure she wants to spoil her budding friendship with the two older ladies by approaching them with what they are doing in the building. She also has budding friendships with Officer Sharla Coogin, the first officer on the scene and Mitch Woodruff the farmer from next door. The character development in the story is great as you see Josie, the newcomer in a very small community, begin to fit in and the characters in town, including Uncle Eb show the nuances of everyday life. The plot is well developed and there are a few twist and turns that make the story interesting. I loved the ending and look forward to more books in the series.I picked the book up because I am a knitter, but I recommend this book to knitters and non-knitters alike.

By San Michelle Hum somebody need to get back here and tell me what happened after that good for nothing Chauncey met is ultimate demise, and Kingston took his rightful place! Like seriously what kind of ending was that?!?!? I need to know if Shadey had the baby - did they move to Jamaica, did they have more kids. Come on now!!! Other than the ending the book had a lot of twists and turns and some of which, I didn't see coming....but again that ending was something to be desired. Overall I give the series 4 stars!

By jdluv ...I read the whole series..skipped a lot. at the beginning of the series, I described Tristan as despicable and hoped he would redeem himself. well, he did, irrespective of his BDSM lifestyle. I didn't necessarily like the author's writing style and the editing of the series was simply atrocious! and, why for goodness sake, did the author use the f-bomb excessively in Tristan's dialogue? she made him so classless.

The Blood Flag was last seen on October 18, 1944, when Heinrich Himmler displayed it proudly as he commissioned the Volkssturm, the Nazi Party’s new militia created to avert the certain defeat that awaited Germany. Hitler believed the Blood Flag, Blutfahne, carried sacred powers. It held the blood of the first Nazi martyrs, those killed in the Beer Hall Putsch in Munich in 1923, when Hitler first tried to take over Germany. Several Nazis were shot and fell onto the flag, pouring their blood into the already red fabric. That flag—with a white circle and a black swastika in the middle—still lives. Kyle Morrissey, a special agent for the FBI, travels to Europe with his father to see him receive the Legion of Honor from France for his service at Normandy. But after the ceremony, while traveling through Germany, Kyle and his family encounter neo-Nazis perpetuating the evil philosophy he thought his father’s generation had ended once and for all. Kyle soon discovers that tens of thousands are ready to raise the swastika once more and renew the hatred of the thirties and forties. Baffled and furious, Kyle embarks on a personal mission to bring down the movement. But how? In trying to understand the history of Nazism, Kyle learns of the Blood Flag and knows it is the key to his success. From DC to Dresden to Recklinghausen and Argentina, the Blood Flag leads Kyle on a worldwide race in an attempt to end international Nazism for good.

He does a great job of weaving historical events and the tensions that went with them into the immigration issues currently facing Europe and the US. But he manages to do so with an action packed plot line that would make a great movie. Yet again, Huston seems to have written on a topic that happens to be exactly what is being broadcast on the evening news with marches occurring in multiple European countries protesting immigration. Huston again creates a story where the final third of the book is impossible to put down. Blood Flag is a great read and moves up to my all time favorite Huston novel!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I wishThe Blood Flag a little longer so my questions were answered. By N. H. The Blood FlagBy: James W. HustonRead by: Peter GanimRuntime: 11.3 HoursRecording: UnabridgedRelease date: 11.10.2015Publisher: Blackstone AudioGenre: Fiction/Thrillers/SuspenseISBN-13: 978-1-5046-7642-7I would recommend that you have had some exposure to the early 20th century history to be able to get the most out of this book. I have read William L. Shirer’s The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich which helped me understand a lot of the “whats” and “whys” in the book. The book revolves around the search for the most holy relic to the Nazi culture, the Blood Flag (Blutfahne) which holds the blood from the first Nazi “Martyrs” who died during the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch. Hitler treated it like a holy relic. It disappeared shortly before the war ended.Kyle Morrissey specializes in international terrorism for the FBI. He experiences a moment of unreality when days after attending the D-Day Ceremony at Normandy, he and his family are caught in a Nazi march in Germany. He questions how the evil the greatest generation fought and beat can still be in existence. As he researches modern Nazi-ism, he becomes obsessed, leading him to cooperate with the FBI agent in charge of tracking Neo-Nazis. Before too long Kyle finds himself looking for the Blood Flag as a way to gain admission to the top Neo-Nazi group in the world.I enjoyed the history in the story. I thought the characters, especially Kyle and Jedidiah were interesting but never fully fleshed out. During the incident that starts Kyle’s obsession, he is accompanied by his wife and children. They promptly vanish except for one or two mentions for the rest of the book. He drops his own work in International Terrorism to pursue his Nazi obsession and the FBI does not reign him in. Jedidiah’s backstory is never truly explored. He was a virulent Neo-Nazi and now he is a confidential informant for the FBI. I never really got a good handle on his conversion. The German officers in the equivalent of the FBI remained a question on whether they sympathized with the Neo-Nazis or not.To be clear, I enjoyed the book. I listened at every opportunity I had for the last few days. It certainly held my attention. But it ended somewhat abruptly and I was left with a lot of unanswered questions (see paragraph above).Peter Ganim did a nice job as a narrator. He handled all the accents, American (both Southern and more non descript) German, and Russian well. Mr. Ganim did a nice job with the few females when they made appearances. His pacing with consistent with the action. The production values were excellent. I would definitely listen to another book narrated by Peter Ganim and will read another by James W. Huston. The story artfully blends historical facts with present day issues. I have enjoyed all of Huston's books and this one is just as great. I really enjoyed his move into thriller and espionage novels. Those who are fans of Daniel Silva's Gabriel Allon series will definitely like Blood Flag!

The letters of the great writer to his wife—gathered here for the first time—chronicle a decades-long love story and document anew the creative energies of an artist who was always at work.No marriage of a major twentieth-century writer is quite as beguiling as that of Vladimir Nabokov’s to Véra Slonim. She shared his delight in life’s trifles and literature’s treasures, and he rated her as having the best and quickest sense of humor of any woman he had met. From their first encounter in 1923, Vladimir’s letters to Véra form a narrative arc that tells a half-century-long love story, one that is playful, romantic, pithy and memorable. At the same time, the letters tell us much about the man and the writer. We see the infectious fascination with which Vladimir observed everything—animals, people, speech, the landscapes and cityscapes he encountered—and learn of the poems, plays, stories, novels, memoirs, screenplays and translations on which he worked ceaselessly. This delicious volume contains twenty-one photographs, as well as facsimiles of the letters themselves and the puzzles and doodles Vladimir often sent to Véra.

Letters to Véra, by Vladimir Nabokov

Review [These] letters contain some of the most moving passages he would ever write, full of alternately impressionistic and exquisitely detailed glimpses at the world around him, which he portrays as almost painfully beautiful ... The Nabokov on display in this beautifully produced volume ... [is] an author who sees his task as talking his fragile reader down from an upper-storey ledge by showing her the luminosity of a world that has somehow ceased to be a source of delight ... [This] publication is an impressive achievement ... The richly textured, eminently readable translations by Boyd and Olga Voronina are admirably faithful Times Literary Supplement Some of the most rapturous love letters anyone has ever written, love letters from the length of a lifelong marriage; beautiful performances for Vera, Nabokov's wife, and incidentally for us ... so absorbing ... sentences of pure magic -- Philip Hensher Spectator A compelling record, it confirms Nabokov as possibly the most happily married writer of the 20th century. Every one of his books was dedicated to Vera; she was the sure centre of his world ... Tinged with a sensuous immediacy of detail, Letters to Vera is a record of rapture ... Superbly edited by Olga Voronina and Brian Boyd, these letters reveal Nabokov as a considerable wit, with a gift for terse put-downs and fascination with what remained outside his class and culture - whether it was Greyhound buses in Massachusetts or the New York subway. Now, perhaps for the first time, the Russian writer emerges distinct from the shadows of his biographers, and as one of the most uxoriously besotted writers of all time -- Ian Thomson Observer Nabokov's letters to Vera, translated from the Russian and published for the first time in a handsome and meticulously edited edition, provide insight into the unfolding of Nabokov's considerable talent. It has been a collaborative production, driven by the doyen of Nabokov scholarship, Brian Boyd, and assisted by Olga Voronina, of Bard College ... this is Nabokov uncut -- Duncan White Telegraph

About the Author VLADIMIR NABOKOV studied French and Russian literature at Trinity College, Cambridge, then lived in Berlin and Paris, writing prolifically in Russian under the pseudonym Sirin. In 1940, he left France for America, where he wrote some of his greatest works, including Lolita (1955) and Pnin(1957), while also teaching at Wellesley, Harvard, and Cornell. After returning to Europe in 1959, he wrote Pale Fire (1962) and Ada (1969) and translated his earlier Russian novels, stories and poems into English. He died in Switzerland in 1977.  OLGA VORONINA was deputy director of the Nabokov Museum in St. Petersburg and was the Nabokov Estate representative in Russia before receiving a PhD in Slavic languages and literatures from Harvard University. She is now assistant professor of Russian and director of the Russian and Eurasian Studies Program at Bard College. BRIAN BOYD, University Distinguished Professor of English, University of Auckland, wrote an MA thesis that Vladimir Nabokov called “brilliant” and a PhD thesis that Véra Nabokov thought the best thing written about her husband to date. His biography of Nabokov won awards on four continents; his criticism has been translated into eighteen languages. He has edited Nabokov's English-language novels, autobiography, butterfly writings, and translations from Russian poetry.

A Bottle of Ink, a Speck of Sun, and You By Elena Danielson Given Nabokov's penchant for creating a fictitious persona to present to the world, his early letters are a rare glimpse of the man before he has achieved wealth, fame, and a polished facade. These letters to Vera, small masterpieces, are a rare gift. This review should come with a warning: I'm highly conflicted about the works of Vladimir Nabokov. In a college class I was once asked to read a selection of paragraphs by various famous authors, without knowing the authors' actual names. I loved all of the selections with the exception of one hideously overwrought landscape description, that was clearly pure kitsch. To this day I despise the source of the quote: Nabokov's "Lolita." Yet one of my all time favorite books is his "Speak Memory." Another is "The Gift." How could the same writer produce both styles? When I read Brian Boyd's masterful biography of Nabokov, I loved volume 1 about Nabokov the Russian writer, and hated volume 2 about Nabokov the American novelist. Not because of Boyd, but because of the subject. After achieving wealth and fame with "Lolita," Nabokov's self presentations in interviews are particularly egregious: dishonest, arrogant, and great fun to read. Nabokov delighted in hoaxes, doubles, mimicry, and disguises. So I'm grateful that Brian Boyd, with his wealth of knowledge about the "real" Nabokov, was willing to work with the translator Olga Voronina on annotating Nabokov's "Letters to Vera," his fiercely devoted wife. While fact-oriented, Boyd is still dutifully respectful of both the author and his wife. Michael Maar's "Speak, Nabokov," is a useful antidote to the usual hagiography. Maar was the first to point out the obscure German work by Lichberg that foreshadows "Lolita" in terms of subject matter and title. Not the object of direct plagiarism, but a surprising source for an author who claimed not to know the German language. Is learning about the man from his letters a breach of privacy? Even the early letters were definitely intended to be kept and reread. In fact, he altered his style after re-reading some of the first letters to Vera. Some observations worked their way into his poetry.(p. 248/716) He once visualized what the correspondence with look like as a published volume, and chided Vera that her part would look too small, she should write more. He was self-aware that letters by a writer have special interest. He expected them to be read by German censors at the very least, and used a pseudonym for himself and coded language in certain passages. I don't think this volume represents an invasion of privacy. Anything compromising has been destroyed already by the vigilant Vera herself. The letters make many things clear, that contradict later protestations: yes, he understood German. He was delighted to be called the new Rilke.(p.236) Yes, he enjoyed music. He used numerous musical references.(p.23, p. 102) No, his marriage was not totally "cloudless." He was quite capable of lying to Vera about his encounters with others. (letters from 1937.)I once talked with Nina Berberova about him. She was one of the early readers who discovered his genius when he was a penniless emigre poet giving readings in Paris. She was not overly fond of Vera, and she felt that Nabokov was hiding things. Some of his early personality, the personality that enchanted Berberova comes through in the first part of this volume. There is an endearing lightness in the letters written before 1940. Some have a Rilke-like inflection: "All the rivers have been waiting for your reflection." (p. 8)Often still boyish, he speculates that heaven will be boring as smoking is forbidden, but the angels smoke in secret. When the archangel is looking, they flick the cigarettes away--that's what falling stars are.... Perhaps in a riff on Omar's famous loaf of bread, bottle of wine and thou, "I need so little: a bottle of ink, a speck of sun on the floor --and you" (p. 35)I won't cite all of my favorite lines, always best for readers to encounter them unexpectedly. I hope this is enough to indicate that finding the "real" Nabokov, under all those self-protective layers--is worth the effort.

Schneider This volume of Nabokov's letters to Véra, his wife of over 50 years, is literally that: his letters to her, none in return. She destroyed all hers. She was also a lazy correspondent, as per his complaints. We can't verify that. Why write letters at all? After the couple met in Berlin in the 1920s, there were periods of separation, some due to his work, or visits to his mother, some due to her health. After the family had escaped to America, separations became rare, due to stable jobs and then the Lolita wealth. In consequence, the major part of the letter collection is from the younger, European years. What stands out is the intensity of endearments. The couple never 'matured' out of that stage. Good for them. It doesn't do equally much for the reader though. We notice the magic, and we are happy for them, but did we need to keep peeping? What does he write to her about? Mostly about his days. Weather. Food. Family. Books. People. Places. Tennis. Swimming. And he sends her puzzles, cross words, word riddles. This is sometimes interesting, in bits and pieces, but it doesn't show us new sides of the man. We do get the occasional fireworks of words, and that aspect is very fine.By the 1930s, more and more letters read like business letters: she had gradually become more than his confidente, but would also be more and more his manager, assistant, secretary, agent, organizer, driver, understudy. These business letters may be valuable for historians of detail, but I find them rather dull. That changes in 1937, which is the dramatic high point. He is looking for a place to move to, in England or France, and she must leave Berlin with the little son. They will move out of Germany and then out of France 'just in time'. There is tension in his letters. There had been an affair with another woman, and Véra isn't fully following his suggestions. Travel arrangements are a bureaucratic nightmare. Communication is obstructed by the lack of Internet...The man was under huge stress during those years. How to find safety and comfort for his family? As a Nabophile, I conclude thus: this volume is not among the necessities of your book shelf. With 'Speak, Memory', plus the 2-volume Boyd biography of Vladimir, plus the Schiff biography of Véra, plus the letters between Nabokov and Edmund Wilson, you got the biographical angle sufficiently covered. For prose, go for the stories and the novels. These letters are not more than an appendix.

By Dawn Yacovetta As if Wulf's father's antics aren't enough, Rae's family has to make an appearance too. I'm never sure if I feel more for what Rae has to go through, with her family trying to scare the devil out of her and Wulf's father trying to break them up even after they're already married, or poor Wulf who has to be having one heart attack after another with all of the frightful circumstances involving his wife. How he keeps his composure, no one will ever know. Rae is his one constant, the one who calms him when he begins to spin out of control, the one who holds him when he experiences feelings he's never known before and the one who loves him when he has trouble loving his broken self.Their relationship is so multi-faceted that, I hope, Ms Babylon continues the telling of it. Those of us, who watch from the stands, want to see how their story plays out. I, for one, have fallen in love with them. Thank you, Ms Babylon, for another gem.

A desire for status has brought Ondry and Liam to a human world to trade, but dealing with humans has brought up all the old pain in Liam’s heart. Even though Ondry would do anything to protect his beloved palteia, he doesn’t know how to protect Liam from himself. Worse, Ondry isn’t sure how to shield Liam from the shifting politics on the Rownt ship where the Calti Grandmothers are nothing like the ones they left behind on the planet. With everything in their lives changing, Ondry and Liam have only each other. If Ondry can’t find a way to defend Liam from the ghosts of the past and overcome the impossibly short life span of a human, their small family might be over long before either of them is ready to let go. Ondry has always been a dominant and possessive Rownt, and with Liam in danger, those traits are necessary as he challenges the world to protect his lover.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Romance, Knowledge, and Powerful Storytelling By SJ Himes Intelligent and sexy reading!Third book, and awesome. I have yet to find a better combination of linguistics and cultural examination coupled with aspects of the D/s lifestyle, the differences and values in human cultures, and in-depth world building. Not to mention the sex. Seriously, I love this series. Usually I can't find intelligent romance and scifi, as one typically precludes the other, but in this series about Liam and Ondry, I can't get enough. I am deeply attached to the characters and the story, and the fact that the books are getting better as they continue on is making it hard for me to wait between releases. This book is not standalone, you need to read them in order. Loved this one. It was exactly what I needed, and if you read this book, you'll see why that phrase is spot on.I am really hoping there's a fourth book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Excellent! By Daniel Bowen Once more we catch up with Liam and Ondry, but this time on Earth. I'm happy this story focused on them and saw a new dimension to their relationship. They are still learning and growing in their roles as individuals and partners. In this story there's a deeper look at the grandmothers, focusing on those bound to the ship. They are more accessible and open in their views -- Probably because they deal with other races. One grandmother, The Eldest, interacts with Liam and Ondry and not just with trade.. At one point the Eldest asked about empathy and service in humans. She wanted to understand their motivations, if they are genetic or cultural. As grandmothers give up their name and family to serve in their temples, the questioning made sense. There was some stumbling, more clarification, and finally understanding. I can't begin to explain how well done this situation was as everything else in the story. Remember, 'unique' isn't in the Rownt vocabulary. *grin*I hope this series continues. Would more human palteia join the Rownt? Will the grandmothers offer safe habor to those abused and wanting a better life? There is a need there for both species. . . . . .I'd love to be a fly on the wall when that boy toy is interacting with the Elder. . . . And if the other grandmothers are jealous.. . . . . . . .I did wonder if the grandmothers were behind that military 'notice' . .. . .This is a wonderful story but to really enjoy it start with the first: Claimings, Tails, and Other Alien Artifacts. Highly recommended. - Dan's Wife

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This story rocks on! By C Green This story continues to rock. It's 3rd in the series. It's one of the most original story lines I have ever read. There is a deep connection between Ondry and Liam and they are a solid team. Ondry is trying to find where his status with a new group of Grandmothers on the ship as they travel to earth. When they reach earth, both Liam and Ondry try to get foreign cultures to understand each other. Liam feels overwhelmed and underqualified to represent the entire human race and is somewhat shocked at conceptions the Rowt developed from observing him. Ondry is very protective of Liam and stands up to the Grandmothers and humans to defend his Liam.As always these stories get my mind chewing over ideas of what it means to be loyal. To love. When is loyalty overdeveloped? When is it worth the sacrifice? How do you love when you sometimes hate the human race? The dynamic of needing a Dominant to help a Submissive overcome self abuse/ self doubt also intrigues. The culture shock and misunderstandings on both sides make me look at who are we really as humans. How Lyn gets me to see humans from an outside alien perspective is amazing to me.

The powerful Duke of Danby is at it again! 1816 was the year without a summer, but what a Christmas it will be when His Grace finally turns his matchmaking machinations to distant branches of the Whitton family tree. Collection Two includes: Aileen Fish's A Marquess For Christmas ~ Four years ago, Lady Eleanor’s brother Archie found his love, Harriet, indirectly due to the Duke of Danby’s summons at Christmastime. Now Eleanor hopes Danby will do the same for her, but she’ll have to get over her shyness to meet anyone. Discovered by the handsome Marquess of Wickham as she hides away in the nursery, she agrees to pretend there’s an understanding between them so his uncle won’t try to force him to marry. Eleanor enjoys Wickham’s company, but how will she find a husband if the gentlemen all believe she’s already in love? Claudia Dain’s The Mating Game ~ Jeanne Whitton is a whisper away from being on-the-shelf. She and her sisters have been summoned to Danby Castle for Christmas. She knows that her uncle, the Duke of Danby has a history of arranging marriages and she, as the eldest sister, decides to sacrifice herself on Danby's altar of matrimony. * Achilles Munro has been sent by Danby to India for one purpose: matrimony. He must choose one of the Whitton sisters to marry, but which one? Jeanne isn't the beauty of the family yet there is something about her that soothes the shadows on his soul. Jane Charles’s Christmas Spirits ~ Mary Soares was supposed to spend Christmas, nice and warm on her family’s estate in Falkirk, Scotland, tending to their whisky business. However, the English have made smuggling almost impossible, and so order after order is waiting at the distillery until it’s safe enough to continue shipments. Most customers understand this. Most customers are reasonable. The Duke of Danby is not most customers. So after a number of demands from His Grace, insisting upon his order, Mary decides to deliver the whisky herself since no one else is available. * Benjamin Storm, Earl of Kenley, breathes a sigh of relief when his summons from the Duke of Danby has nothing to do with matrimony or a stack of special licenses. Instead, his uncle just needs Benjamin to travel to Scotland and procure his missing whisky shipment in time for his holiday festivities. The chore sounds easy enough, at least until he encounters a most unusual smuggler on her way to Danby Castle. Benjamin’s life may never be the same.

Love & Hope at Christmas By Dee Foster Aileen Fish, Jane Charles & Claudia Dain come together to entertain with more tales of the hilarious, meddlesome Duke of Danby. From the lady who’s greatest desire is to marry but is extremely shy & the jilted Marquess who refuses to be forced to marry; the “almost” spinster who is willing to sacrifice herself to the Duke’s plans to the gentleman who has traveled to India for the sole purpose of marrying – a travel filled with perils; to the Scottish widow undertaking a dangerous delivery & the gentleman assigned to retrieve something for the Duke. Each tale will have you laughing at the characters antics and, as always, the meddling Duke (who takes credit for each & every marriage). The perfect set of stories to compliment other Danby stories. Don’t miss out on these wonderful tales of love & hope at Christmas.

They were all written by some of my favorite authors and the stories were all different. My favorite was the novella by Claudia Dain. I liked the fact that we "listened in" what the h/H were thinking and how they fell in love.

H. P. Lovecraft wrote “The Call of Cthulhu” in 1926, initiating the Cthulhu Mythos, one of the most widely imitated shared-world universes in weird fiction. Even in his lifetime, many other writers added to the Mythos, and after his death hundreds if not thousands of authors of weird, fantasy, and science fiction have added their distinctive elaborations on Lovecraft’s basic themes and ideas. This volume features some of the best Cthulhu Mythos writing over the past century. Beginning with such rare but classic stories as Mearle Prout’s “The House of the Worm” and Robert Barbour Johnson’s “Far Below,” from the pages of Weird Tales, the anthology moves on to James Wade’s novella “The Deep Ones” and Ramsey Campbell’s refreshing riff on the “forbidden book” motif, “The Franklyn Paragraphs.” Acclaimed stories by T. E. D. Klein, Thomas Ligotti, Neil Gaiman, and W. H. Pugmire are also included. The book includes an array of original stories by such leading authors of Lovecraftian fiction as Caitlín R. Kiernan, Joseph S. Pulver, Sr., Donald Tyson, Cody Goodfellow, and Michael Shea. Gemma Files contributes a richly textured novella, while Jonathan Thomas offers a story full of his distinctive melding of horror and satire. A Mountain Walked is chock-full of stories old and new that highlight the endless variations that can be played on H. P. Lovecraft’s signature creation. S. T. Joshi is the leading authority on H. P. Lovecraft. He is the author of I Am Providence: The Life and Times of H. P. Lovecraft and the editor of the Black Wings series of Lovecraftian fiction. He edits the Lovecraft Annual and the Weird Fiction Review.

Review of the Print and Kindle Copies of A Mountain Walked (As Compared to the Centipede Press Hardback) By Anthony Rodriguez So, to start, this is NOT a review of the content of A Mountain Walked. Not because it's irrelevant, simply because I believe A Mountain Walked will ultimately be placed alongside the great horror/weird anthologies of the 20th and 21st Century right along with Wise and Fraser's "Great Tales of Terror and the Supernatural; Hartwell's The Dark Descent/Foundations of Fear; and the Vandermer's The Weird. I would say it is the finest Lovecraft Anthology that has ever been assembled. Period. And this is among a STRONG group of contenders such as Lockhart's Book of Cthulhu 1 and 2, the Black Wings series, Dead but Dreaming, and even the original one Arkham House's Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos and New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos. In terms of both content and presentation it flat out beats every other. Centipede did a phenomenal job among an already impressive publishing oeuvre. So, the review of the anthology is simple to me. Some of the stories (e.g., Ligotti's Last Feast of the Harlequin) are repeats, some (e.g., Kiernan's John Four) are original. All are outstanding. So what is the difference between the Centipede Hardback, the Dark Regions Softcover, and the Dark Regions Kindle? And which one should I buy (i.e., what's worth the cost)? I bought all 3. The Hardback is now desperately out of print and I hope Centipede publishes a second edition hardback so more people can have it. So you really are between the softcover and the kindle. So, cliff notes version, go for the Kindle. Now I'll explain why. The Softcover and the Kindle share identical features with ONE big exception, which I'll go into below. So, the comparison is between Centipede Hardback vs. Dark Regions Softcover and Kindle. Here's the longer version. The following are NOT in the Dark Regions editions:Laird Barron's story "Man With No Name"TC Boyle's story "Thirteen Hundred Rats"Denis Tiani's story "Rupa Worms From Outer Space"The 2 HPL Illustrated Stories (Pickman's Model and The Lurking Fear)And . . . ALL the art portfolios :( :( :(I kinda expected this, would have exponentially increased cost. Now, in the Softcover there are black and white reprints of some of the pictures from the Art Portfolios but really the only true color reproduction you get is the outside cover. Everything else is in black and white and if this was a picture of Michelangelo's paintings that might work but the art in A Mountain Walked is obviously given to darker color palates, not lighter, thus making the black and white reproductions come out very badly (the worst offender comes right before Caitlin Kiernan's "John Four"). But! The Kindle edition has the exact same pictures as the Softcover edition but they are in color (as God or The Great Old Ones intended) and you can zoom in on them. Ergo, my preference for the Kindle. This is why the Dark Regions Edition lost a star though because the artwork was incredible and I might have given them a pass if they'd left the HPL illustrated editions (even in the bad black and white) AND Drazen Kozjan's graphic novel-esque story "Excerpts From A Notebook" (it was a good one). Also, the Softcover is still a little pricey and the Kindle, as of my last looking, is $5 bucks. One interesting thing I found out is that if you purchase the Softcover copy first and you have Amazon Prime, you qualify for something called "Matchbook Kindle". You may all know about this but it was new to me. Point being it knocked off $3 bucks from the Kindle so I got the Kindle version too for just $2 bucks. Nice! This is not to say I'm knocking the Softcover. I don't regret buying mine because I'm the kind of reader who likes to mark up his books and there's no way I'm marking the Hardcover version. I'm honestly afraid to touch it with my bare fingers (like what if I have cheeto stains and it rubs off? I know I ate those cheetos two days ago but there could be residue! I don't know how cheeto residue works!!!) and I am also a reader who likes to hold paper, little Old School that way. So, Softcover isn't bad, just if your mission is to read the stories and see the artwork that was left in, Kindle would be a good option. Now, you hear me complaining about the art work being messed up by the black and white transfer (although I said they would have increase price if it was in color which sounds like I'm contradicting myself and I am, because who ever said I had to be consistent? I drink coffee at like 9pm then complain when I can't go to sleep; that's the kind of guy whose advice you're taking.) BUT what keeps the Dark Regions version at a solid 4 stars is that they apparently added a story. If I missed it (for anyone out there who also has the Centipede Hardcover) please correct me but I looked at the table of contents for the Centipede version with a fine tooth comb and couldn't find Jason V. Brock's "The Man With The Horn" story. So, thanks Dark Regions! We got an extra story! And that's about it. So short version: Get the Kindle but if you buy the Softcover you're fine.

This is one of the best anthologies I can recall. I rarely reread a book but I will for some of the stories in 'A Mountain Walked' just to again enjoy the thrill of strangeness and something truly alien.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A psychological thriller! By B. Boren The duo of Connie Barerra and Paul Russo are a reader's delight. These books are thrillers for sure. This one is a bit different, however. I would say it is more of a "Psychological" thriller rather than an actioner. You won't see any explosions or high speed chases, or even a shoot out. But the tension is palpable, and builds to a crescendo with each passing chapter. Reminiscent of "Cape Fear", and a host of other thrillers, we know the bad guys are REALLY bad. But we also know that Connie and Paul are very capable of defending themselves. Will they be taken in by the deceit? Have they finally met their match? Are they suckered for a poor girl with a shady history? The ending of this is surprising... I was fooled all along....as were our heroes. This is an excellent work by the author of many first rate thrillers. I am so glade he is prolific, for I can't seem to get enough from his talented and mesmerizing pen.

Fast reads, and I like how the two cross back and forth and relate to each other. Would recommend to anybody new to these to read them in order of publication, not necly just first one series and then the other, because of the crossovers, to stay in sync. Keep up the great work!
