The third stand-alone book in A Learning Experience ... In the wake of Earth’s collapse into chaos, Captain Hoshiko Stuart made the mistake of speaking her mind - and was exiled six months from Sol to a naval base in an unexplored and uncontacted sector. Placed in command of a single squadron of starships, she expected nothing but boredom. But when she discovers an alien race threatening to exterminate all other races within the sector, Hoshiko and her squadron are drawn into a war to stop them, even if it means forging an alliance with aliens who may themselves become a threat to humanity and building an empire that may alienate her from her family once and for all. Graf In this book, Nuttall adds a satisfying volume to the "A Learning Experience" series of books which describe the emergence of humanity onto the cosmic stage. In this book, Captain Hoshiko Stuart gets sent to a system six months away from the Solar Union as punishment for speaking out of turn to the media. Of course, like her counterpart Honor Harrington, she makes the most of her detached duty basing her decisions to start and support an alliance against a genocidal species on ethical beliefs. She has guts and know that her choices may condemn her once command authority requires her to justify what she's done. Even so, she makes the choice to do what is right in her eyes. If you enjoy the Harrington or Hornblower books, you will enjoy this one as well. Though it is helpful to have read the earlier books in this series, it's not absolutely necessary.

I have really enjoyed the different series he has written and seen how the writing has improved over time. I especially enjoy his perspective and analysis of current world events in the afterwords of his books and how they tie the story to historical/current events. While I may not be a deep thinker and tracker of current events and the hash our selfserving lying politicians are making of our country, I am a US Army veteran (pre desert storm) and find myself quite in agreement with much of his analysis. I just wish all the sheeple in the US had a little more global perspective and concern over the direction we are being taken and what is going to happen to western society, morals and values over the next 50 years unless we actually take a harsh stand and say enough! A Learning Experience series shows one possible direction that more people should think about as a result of the consequences of our current "politically correct" environment. Real men don't get offended. Deal with it.

The problems began in the first book and just kept on going, the good guys too good, the bad guys too bad. The tactical and technological problems just glossed over. If Webers "Honorverse" is a ten, this is a four. There is one likeable character in the entire third book, which reads like a Flash Gordon serial. I could go on, but I just don't care enough. If you're 14 you may enjoy yourself, otherwise, have a beer and watch a ball game.
