Praise for Joseph Souza: "I have read Souza's horror novels and mysteries and I already knew he had talent to burn as a writer. What I didn't know was just how funny and odd he could be. Fujita's Itch reminds me of George Saunders, and that is about the highest praise I could give." Brian Whitney, author of Raping the Gods. "Its impact on a reader reminds me of the old Stephen King classic, 'The Shining.'. . .both suspenseful from start to finish." Portland Press Herald on The Reawakening. "The most impressive attribute is Souza's well-thought out setting." Kirkus Reviews ----- From critically-acclaimed horror and crime writer Joseph Souza (Unpaved Surfaces, The Reawakening, and The Liger Plague) comes a book of surprising humor and pathos. One part Don Delillo, one part George Orwell, and with a dash of Elmore Leonard, these satirical tales show readers the fun side of a very talented author. Fujita’s Itch A short novel about a troubled writer who hooks up with a trio of bizarre tornado chasers, and ends up getting much more than he bargained for. His assignment: to track down a tornado or get fired from the magazine where he works. But as he rides through Tornado Alley, he learns that there is more to contend with than simply chasing the legendary and elusive Fujita Six level storm. There is Frank, domineering captain of the storm chasing conversion van, and hero to the flatland masses; there is Destiny, Frank’s beautiful and naïve 16-year-old captive; and there is Phineas, the 81-year-old tornado tourist who has paid $10,000 to come on this trip. Yet no one is quite who they seem to be. For behind it all is a shadowy corporation with a sinister goal: to maximize profits through the citizenry’s fear of tornados. The troubled writer soon comes to realize that he has been chosen for this assignment for one primary reason - so that he may become the next puppet dictator of Tornado Alley. But will he? The Stone Walls of Lebanon New York City mobsters Keith Benedicto and Vincent Capuzzi drive to New Hampshire to steal a priceless stone wall dating back to the American Revolution. Keith has been skimming profits, and he’s worried that his boss Sal Figlio wants him dead. Keith suspects Vincent might have been given the job. In fact, Sal wants them both dead. One murder leads to another murder, which leads to yet another murder, as the bodies pile up in quiet rural New England. The Stone Walls of Lebanon won Honorable Mention for the Al Blanchard Crime Writing Award. Queensland Struggling writer Julian and his new wife April spend their honeymoon in England. While the young couple are in London, Islamic terrorists set off a very unusual bomb, leaving April frustrated and Julian questioning his sexual identity. About the Author Joseph Souza is the critically acclaimed author of UNPAVED SURFACES (Kindle Press). He is the winner of the Andre Dubus Award for short fiction. His first novel, THE REAWAKENING, won the 2013 Maine Literary Award. Souza has worked as a teacher, cabbie, social worker, truck driver, editor, bouncer, barber, wrestling coach, paralegal and intelligence analyst in the DEA (Organized Crime Unit), to name just a few. FUJITA'S ITCH is his seventh book of fiction. ----- Praise for Joseph Souza: "An Instant Indie classic!" Indie Horror News on The Reawakening. COASM on The Liger Plague "Souza's masterful hand vividly paints the unctuous feelings of remorse and loss, love, compassion, personal struggle, and redemption." Fiona Quinn, author of the Weakest Lynx

In the title story, Fujita's Itch, Souza paints a plausible scenario where a down and out journalist rides along with a tornado chaser. The story evolves into a fantasy, but without the reader ever once feeling that the leap was too great. The Stone Walls of Lebanon, the second story, a study of the criminal mind, could easily have been written as an episode of Sopranos. In Queensland, the final entry, Sousa takes a quick but deep dive into how a relationship between a couple on their honeymoon is affected by unforeseen events. It is rare to find an author who not only writes compelling novels but can assemble three unique pieces of fiction into a single collection like this one. I couldn't put it down.

If I had to compare this book, though, it does have that George-Saunders-has-brunch-with-Will-Self feel. Quirky, funny lighthearted (for the most part). Unlike the other couple of books I've read from him. Souza is a very well-rounded writer. Not at all a one-trick pony. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a laugh and a few good stories. If I could put Joseph Souza in my pocket and carry him around, bringing him out once in a while to tell me stories, I would. But that would be depriving the rest of the world.
