4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Good read for faithful fans of Malcolm and Suzanne. By OLT I enjoyed this because it's the continuation of events in the lives of married spy couple Malcolm and Suzanne Rannoch. When we last left them in The Mayfair Affair (Malcolm & Suzanne Rannoch Historical Mysteries Book 9), they were still working through issues in their relationship because of the big reveal to Malcolm (at the end of The Berkeley Square Affair (Malcolm & Suzanne Rannoch Historical Mysteries Book 7) that Suzanne has been working as a spy for the French during their marriage and, indeed, her original motivation for marrying him was to use him as a source of information to hand over to the French.Well. it's ever been my opinion that they don't have a very passionate marriage. Malcolm married her because after rescuing her from danger (at least he believed she was in danger) on the Continent during the war, he felt obliged to offer her the protection of marriage. And affection, perhaps even love, had been growing between them until that bombshell. So now they're trying to patch things up and see if trust can grow again. That's where they are in their relationship. The novella itself revolves around a ball in April of 1818 that they are hosting at their Berkeley Square home in London to which all their friends and acquaintances have been invited. (And, yes, they're almost all there. It's like a roll-call of characters from all the previous books.) During the party some spies, mostly known to the couple, slip in the library window, unbeknownst to the guests but discovered by Suzanne and Malcolm. A letter is to be delivered to Suzanne's hands so that she can slip it to one of the guests, but there are unexpected problems. One, the letter has gone missing, and two, there are two law enforcement officials who come to the house searching for the spies. Malcolm and Suzanne must figure out a way to keep their spy friends hidden and also must find that missing letter. This has some interesting moments and if you like touching base with as many characters as your brain can handle that would be another plus. But I still have problems understanding the Suzanne/Malcolm dynamic. It's pretty bloodless and passionless. Malcolm never exploded at the revelation about Suzanne and their reconciliation is occurring rather painlessly and passionlessly. But then, that extremely low-key, passionless way of writing romance has always been a Grant trademark, even in the 1980s with the early Regencies she co-wrote with her mother.

This gives us time to follow the progress in Malcolm and Suzanne's, and Raoul and Laura's relationships, which is sweet, but I kept expecting the other shoe to drop and it never did. If you like the focus being on relationships, this book confirms and strengthens some aspects of the varied relationships, and moves the series along in some ways. If you need or want the usual exciting mystery that Grant writes, this book doesn't offer one.

Characters are plentiful and if I weren't a follower of the series, I don't know if I could keep them all straight although the author does make it clear who they are.
