It’s been ten years since Dr. Bill Brockton created the Body Farm—the world’s first postmortem research facility dedicated to advancing the frontiers of forensic science—and the researcher is at the pinnacle of his career. Under his leadership, the University of Tennessee’s forensic anthropology program has become the most prominent in the world, and Brockton’s skills and knowledge are in high demand among top law enforcement. Calling him in for a number of high profile cases, the FBI now wants him to identify the charred remains of a maverick millionaire, killed in a fiery plane crash.

But a storm is about to hit Brockton with cataclysmic force. First, his identification of the crash victim is called into question. Then he receives a threatening message from the serial killer who attempted to murder the scientist and his family a decade ago. And from Brockton’s beloved wife Kathleen—his lodestone and his source of security—he gets the most shocking news of all. From the Back Cover

Dr. Bill Brockton—founder of the University of Tennessee's macabre Body Farm—has enjoyed professional acclaim and personal contentment in the years since he once came close to losing his wife and son at the hands of a serial killer. The pioneering research done at the Body Farm, and Brockton's forensic expertise, have earned him respect, renown, and high-profile cases.

Now the FBI has asked Brockton to help identify the remains of a pilot killed in a suspicious, fiery plane crash. Are the charred bones indeed those of maverick humanitarian Richard Janus? And was the nighttime crash an accident, a suicide—or a murder?

But a storm is about to hit Brockton with cataclysmic force. First, he discovers he's landed in the middle of a nasty political battle. Then his identification of the crash victim is called into question, as is the future of his research facility. Reeling from these blows, he receives a gruesome threat from the killer who nearly murdered the Brocktons more than a decade before. But Brockton gets the most shocking news of all from his beloved Kathleen.

Will the legendary Dr. Bill Brockton be pushed beyond his breaking point?

A Good Prequel to the Body Farm Series By Vicky Jefferson Bass’ Body Farm Series is one of my favorite series, so I have really been looking forward to this latest release of Breaking Point. This novel is a prequel to the series and follows in the footsteps from the previously released novel, Cut to the Bone. It begins with Dr. William Brockton, founder of the Body Farm, investigating a plane crash south of San Diego involving a well-known humanitarian, Richard Janus. At first it seemed just a matter of recovering the body and determining the cause of the accident, but as the excavation continued it becomes apparent that something more sinister was taking place. After the excavation, it seemed that Brockton’s contribution to the investigation was complete but then information came about that his findings were wrong and his career and the body farm were on the line. Brockton’s luck turned from bad to worse as a series of events begin to take place that pushes Brockton to the edge of his own sanity.I have mixed feelings about Breaking Point. The first half of the novel focused totally on excavating the crash site which became rather tedious. Unless you really wanted to know all the intricate details in the slow progression of excavating a crime scene, then I think you will find it a bit boring. However, for the second half of the novel, the drama of the story escalates as Brockton must deal with both professional as well as personal hardships and at the same time try to solve a perplexing murder which does make for an exciting read. With the ending, it becomes apparent that the series has come full circle which may give a hint that the next in the series will take off from where The Inquisitor’s Key ended. For those of you that have not read the whole series in order, some aspects of this novel may be confusing. Cut to the Bone followed with Breaking Point are prequels, the rest of the series then takes off with Carved in Bone with the rest of the series ending with The Inquisitor’s Key. So with the exception of a slow start, Breaking Point won’t disappoint particularly if you are a fan of the series.

What is most enjoyable about THE BREAKING POINT and this entire series is how human the characters are By Bookreporter It's hard to believe that we’ve been experiencing Body Farm novels for a decade now. Yes, the very same Body Farm that Patricia Cornwell titled one of her Kay Scarpetta books after --- a fact that is referred to in THE BREAKING POINT. Jefferson Bass, the literary name of tag team authors Jon Jefferson and Dr. Bill Bass, are at the top of their game in this outstanding and emotionally gripping novel. The series predates “Bones” and “CSI,” and includes both real and fictional elements to tell a great story. The protagonist in the series is Dr. Bill Brockton, the famed forensics expert who personally oversees the Body Farm and frequently shares his expertise with every level of law enforcement. The case in THE BREAKING POINT that Brockton is called upon to assist with turns out to be the most daunting of his professional career. The FBI needs him to help identify the charred remains of a fiery plane crash in the low-lying mountains outside of San Diego. What makes this accident particularly interesting is that the pilot was allegedly billionaire philanthropist Richard Janus. Ironically, Brockton and his wife have been donating to Janus' charity for years. Janus is described as a maverick humanitarian well-known for using his fleet of planes for daring airlifts of aid to international disaster sites. There is not much for Brockton to work with outside of some teeth and a nerve-stimulating device that had been implanted in the spine of Janus. They also find the remains of another individual who appeared to be a Mexican immigrant killed by the crash in the act of illegally crossing the border. The teeth are positively identified as belonging to Janus, and the bad news is broken to his wife. However, nothing turns out to be as it appears, and things will backfire on Brockton in a big way. A local FOX reporter breaks the story that the teeth found at the site had been previously extracted, meaning that things may have been set up to look like Janus was a victim of the crash when he actually may still be alive. It is also revealed that the FBI was investigating Janus for alleged dealings with an infamous Mexican drug cartel leader. As Brockton is facing a major blow to his professional credibility, things in his life begin spinning wildly out of control. He receives a death threat, in the form of a box containing the finger of a child, sent by the serial killer who terrorized and nearly murdered his family a few years earlier. A law enforcement colleague of his nearly loses his life when he goes to the prison to confront the killer as a favor to Brockton, only to have his neck slashed by a razor blade. But the worst blow to Brockton is the news that his wife of 30 years, Kathleen, is given a death sentence when she is diagnosed with an aggressive and incurable form of cancer to which she quickly succumbs. Brockton is literally pushed to his breaking point --- emotionally, physically and professionally --- with no sign of things turning around. He compares his situation to the biblical tale of Job, who suffers an endless stream of unbelievable tragedies because he refuses to renounce God.The reader will be right there with Brockton, heart in mouth, as he struggles to overcome his personal tragedies and try to right his life. The first step is to return to San Diego and give another go at the Janus case --- which wrapped up a little too easily for his liking. What is most enjoyable about THE BREAKING POINT and this entire series is how human the characters are. The forensic terminology is spot on, but you never feel like you are being talked over or down to. Brockton is a truly three-dimensional character so well written that it’s impossible not to root for him and feel every bump and bruise right along with him in this hugely rewarding novel.Reviewed by Ray Palen

Mystery and heartbreak rolled into one great read By Phyllida Howe As always, Jefferson Bass (the combined talents of Jon Jefferson and Bill Bass) has created a book well worth reading. This is a prequel, a look back at a dark time in Dr. Brockton's life both from the confusions and mystery around his identification of the remains belonging to a noted humanitarian and the personal darkness and loss within his own life. How Jefferson Bass manage (I now think of them as a partnership) to deal with such often-frightening subjects and yet produce laugh-out-loud humor is amazing, but they succeed. The characters are real, warm human beings. Over the series one has come to care for them deeply, and learning of the earlier days of Brockton's deeply committed marriage and the darkness that impacts it in this book, is a very eye-opening exercise in profoundly human emotion. Love, loss, fear all combine in both the mystery and in the personal lives of the central family and its members. There is richness here - a great mystery coupled with a profound story of love. It is a beautiful journey as well as an exciting tale, and I love it for its many layers exploring the human condition. I also did NOT see the mystery coming much less the conclusion, so from that standpoint alone, it was an excellent story. I will always treasure the deeper and more profound exposition of love and its heartaches. Woven into the mystery without missing a beat, this part of the book - what is the breaking point we all fear - elevates the novel to a very high standard indeed.

That was a WOW!The opening salvo was frightening, to both this reader and Simon. I won't tell you why or what happened, but I can tell you that it read confusing as Simon was confused. It read confusing for Simon nor the reader knows what is going on. The fight or flight instinct kicks in. Where does he go? What does he do? How was he going to get out? Will he survive? The exhausting first chapter sets the pace for Accidental Hero then it slows down a bit, getting the reader into the basics of how Simon came to that point. Then just as quickly, another set of stressful events happen and it takes Simon by surprise. Again. He is in a poor situation but he is fighting to hang on.Cain is an admin for Sanctuary so is dismissed by many as someone who is not the type to be able to subdue a felon. Well, he surprises Simon and the rest of the team for not only does he prove his worth, he proves he can fight when he needs to.And drive a bad ass car he lovingly caresses and talks to......and pet a computer lovingly and speak to it like a lover should...Cain is surprisingly my favorite character! He's... weird. And just plain awesome. So Simon and Cain try to make heads and tails of a killer on the loose. Simon finds himself making a choice and he faces the bullet when he does. Cain will fight to get his lover to safety, even if it means giving up his Ferrari for a BMW. (Frankly, I am with him :D)This. This book. Ms RJ— you rock!

Chicago police officer Simon Grant was caught in the middle of a drug-gang war and framed for his partner’s death. Cain, technical specialist for Sanctuary was most happy working with his technical gizmos~ behind the scenes of the Sanctuary operation. When Simon seeks refuge at Sanctuary’s new Chicago office, he and Cain begin a roller coaster ride.Bullets flying, speeding cars, and who-dun-it are the basis of Accidental Hero. Ms. Scott took her writing to the next level as she powered through the normal cat and mouse game books and demonstrated an uncanny ability to write suspense with a dash of romance while still maintaining a sense of realism.Simon and Cain were phenomenal characters. Both of the men were mysterious and chivalrous and sans any overbearing qualities. Ms. Scott’s writing was focused on the task at hand with the end result of the book leaving me yearning for more. The mystery is left wide open for subsequent books as old characters are an important part of the second volume of the series, and new characters are introduced.Accidental Hero was well-worth the read! Thank you Ms. Scott for another, hit it out of the park, read.Book provided by author/publisher in exchange for an honest reviewDefinite S.E.X.A five handcuff reviewhttp://sexyforreview.blogspot.com/2015/11/sex-review-accidental-hero-by-rj-scott.html

Old series, new beginning By TM This is book number 8 in the Sanctuary series and at the same time we’re starting over – with a new location in Chicago and a new case of characters. We meet Nik and Manny again and hear about Jack but this feels the beginning of a new group. It’s also the beginning of a new case.Cops Jamie and Simon have discovered irregularities in their department, D&G (drugs & guns) and suspect one of the old-timer cops is on the take and working with Varga, a big time drugs and weapons dealer. After receiving a text from Jamie to meet him at his apartment, Simon goes to meet him only to find Jamie recently shot. He runs away and tries to find Sanctuary, the place a fellow cop told him to go if he ever found himself in a situation with no way out. There he meets Cain, who is setting up Sanctuary’s Chicago operations. They go to a safe house with Jamie’s ex-girlfriend, but things start to go wrong. For the romantic part of the story, the book was really too short for me to really get into it and root for the guys. Not that it wasn’t a good storyline but I would have liked more time for the relationship to develop, as it was, it felt rushed to me. I really like the criminal story line and can’t wait to find out how it continues.I’m definitely going to by Sanctuary 9 (Ghost) when it comes out.

‘Wolf winter,’ she said, her voice small. ‘I wanted to ask about it. You know, what it is.’He was silent for a long time. ‘It’s the kind of winter that will remind us we are mortal,’ he said. ‘Mortal and alone.’ Swedish Lapland, 1717. Maija, her husband Paavo and her daughters Frederika and Dorotea arrive from their native Finland, hoping to forget the traumas of their past and put down new roots in this harsh but beautiful land. Above them looms Blackåsen, a mountain whose foreboding presence looms over the valley and whose dark history seems to haunt the lives of those who live in its shadow. While herding the family’s goats on the mountain, Frederika happens upon the mutilated body of one of their neighbors, Eriksson. The death is dismissed as a wolf attack, but Maija feels certain that the wounds could only have been inflicted by another man. Compelled to investigate despite her neighbors’ strange disinterest in the death and the fate of Eriksson’s widow, Maija is drawn into the dark history of tragedies and betrayals that have taken place on Blackåsen. Young Frederika finds herself pulled towards the mountain as well, feeling something none of the adults around her seem to notice. As the seasons change, and the “wolf winter,” the harshest winter in memory, descends upon the settlers, Paavo travels to find work, and Maija finds herself struggling for her family’s survival in this land of winter-long darkness. As the snow gathers, the settlers’ secrets are increasingly laid bare. Scarce resources and the never-ending darkness force them to come together, but Maija, not knowing who to trust and who may betray her, is determined to find the answers for herself. Soon, Maija discovers the true cost of survival under the mountain, and what it will take to make it to spring.

Wolf Winter, by Cecilia Ekbäck

Review “The time and place seem so remote as to be unearthly, and the style has a stealthy quality, like a silent fall of snow; suddenly, the reader is enveloped. The story creeps up and possesses the imagination; there’s something eerie in the way half-understood and only half-seen events leave their mark. It’s a powerful feat of suggestion, visually acute, skillfully written; it won’t easily erase its tracks in the reader’s mind.”— Hilary Mantel, author of the Man Booker Prize-Winning Bestsellers Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies“Exquisitely suspenseful, beautifully written, and highly recommended.”—Lee Child, #1 internationally bestselling author of the Jack Reacher thrillers“The most brilliantly, dark, eerie, intriguing, out-of-this-world tale I've ever read... Think The Killing and then square it.”—Ruby Wax, author of Sane New World“Wolf Winter is a beautiful novel, full of wisdom and poetry. Cecilia Ekbäck writes dark, compelling prose steeped in a powerful sense of place. Spellbinding.”—Saskia Sarginson, author of Without You"It’s rare to come across such an original, compelling and beautifully written novel. Set in a haunted landscape during a dark Scandinavian winter in the 1700s, Wolf Winter has a mystery at its core, supported by richly drawn characters, magical language and so many twists and turns that you’ll be reading and shivering into the wee hours."—Pam Lewis, author of Speak Softly, She Can Hear and A Young Wife“As dark as a winter night in the Arctic, as magical as the northern lights, Wolf Winter kept me turning pages long past my bedtime. A marvelous mixture of terror and delight.”—Lauren B. Davis, author of The Empty Room and Against a Darkening Sky“Rich in history and authentic detail, Wolf Winter is a deeply satisfying read. I highly recommend it.”—Rene Denfeld, author of The Enchanted“In the early 18th century, Maija, her husband Paavo, and their two daughters emigrate from Finland to Swedish Lapland, leaving behind a troubled past. The country is rich and beautiful, but dominated by the ominous mountain Blackasen, said to be a dwelling for evil spirits and dark creatures. Out herding goats, the girls find the body of one of the other settlers. Maija is outspoken in her belief that their neighbor was murdered, despite the reluctance of the other settlers to admit. Winter arrives early and fiercely... As the “wolf winter” continues unabated, they learn that there is nothing so dangerous as fear.”—Lyn Roberts, Square Books (Oxford, MS)“Cecilia Ekback’s tale of Swedish Lapland in 1717 gives insight into the land and people of the far north and is also hard to let go.”—Barbara Theroux, Fact & Fiction (Missoula, MT)“Wolf Winter is richly atmospheric and vivid. The cold is beyond imagining, as is the enveloping dark and the terrible hunger as stores diminish. Inevitably, Wolf Winter will be compared with Hannah Kent's remarkable Burial Rites. Ekback, however, has achieved something different. Wolf Winter is an historical crime mystery in the Nordic noir tradition, which chills as it impresses.”—Anna Creer, Sydney Morning Herald (Australia)“Swedish-born debut author Ekbäck writes with deliberate pacing and immerses the reader in the endless snowfall of winter with her hypnotic prose.”—Emily Byers, Library Journal, Editor’s Fall Pick“This snapshot of life in a place where winter can be unspeakably cruel, where simply staying alive is a victory, proves irresistible.”—The Kirkus Review“Ekbäck is at her best when describing the harsh, unforgiving land and the family’s unending battle with nature.”—Jordan Foster, The Strand Magazine“Wolf Winter eminently repays reading for the beauty of its prose, its strange, compelling atmosphere and its tremendous evocation of the stark, dangerous, threatening place, which exists in the far north and in the hearts of all of us.” – Melanie McGrath, The Guardian (UK)“In Wolf Winter, Swede Cecilia Ekbäck (writing in English) provides something fresh: for a start, a period setting (Swedish Lapland in 1717) and a haunting poetic strain not found elsewhere in the genre, except perhaps in the novels of Johan Theorin…. Highly individual fare.”– Barry Forshaw, Financial Times (UK)“Wolf Winter is an absorbing and impressive debut from an author who I look forward to reading again.”– The Globe and Mail (Canada)“Swedish Lapland of 1717 is evoked so vividly that it seeps into your bones… A highly intelligent piece of historical Scandi-noir.”– The Times (UK)“A compelling, suspenseful story.”– Sunday Times (UK)“Swedish-born Cecilia Ekbäck’s debut novel is a real page-turner. Similar to Stephen King’s writing style and imagination, the novel, which is set in 1717 Lapland, takes us on an exhilarating journey (4 stars).”— Ok! Magazine (UK)“Fans of The Minaturist will love flashing back to the dark bleakness of 1717 Lapland in Cecilia Ekbäck’s debut.”— Grazia Magazine (UK)“Ekbäck keeps the historical setting vivid and laced with pertinent details, but her characters are multifaceted… There is nothing quaint about Ekbäck’s 18th century Sweden, which is full of political gaming at all levels, and a landscape that seems bent on killing anyone who commits to living on it. Ekbäck could certainly follow up with a sequel, but with her balance of fine prose and clever plotting, I hope she ventures into different times and characters, as I’m excited to see her range.”– The National Post (Canada)“This story of the struggle for survival of a family of Finnish settlers in Swedish Lapland in the early 18th Century is not for the faint hearted. The writer creates a convincing atmosphere of a very strange time in a very strange land... The details of how these people survive in an extraordinary landscape stays with you long after you have finished reading.”— Daily Mail (UK)“Cecilia Ekbäck’s debut Wolf Winter is an absorbing tale about fear, death and a cursed land.”— The National (UAE)

For Summer beach reading I grab light easy reading because the book has to go well with the weather and the abundance of summer cocktails. Winter has the advantage of pairing with dark roast Swedish coffee, and a caffeinated brain can handle more meaty reading.Wolf Winter hits me in all my sweet spots. Strong female characters, suspense, fantasy (of the magic variety), survival skills, and lots of snow. I read many nordic noir stories and also historical fiction and this is a nice balanced blend of the two.So basically this is a murder mystery with very nice turns and twists. The setting is as important as the plot. The characters, some are alive and some are not, are drawn in what I think is a typical Scandinavian style in that you get to know these people in small bits and pieces over time. The year is 1717 and the politics of the time and place are important to the story but the writer leaves the boring details out altogether. That was ok with me. There is plenty of revelations and clues and secrets and hauntings to fill out the story. Lots of characters considering the setting but it was never too complicated to keep them all straight. There is a scene in the book with a snow blizzard and an explanation to clear off the porch every time the snow on the window sill reaches an inch. Otherwise they'd be snowed in and wouldn't be able to open the front door. This is the same week in New York state the lake effect snow dumped 6 feet and the news showed photos of a dog who wanted to go out but couldn't because there was a wall of snow behind the front door.It isn't good when we forget the old ways and this is one of the main morals of this book. For readers who care, there is no swearing and no sex on screen. It's a murder mystery with ghosts but it's not a gory horror book.

From the beginning the reader knows that Blackasen Mountain in 1717, is a dark and forbidding place. When Maija and Paavo leave their coastal town to move to the base of the mountain in Sweden's Lapland, with their daughters, Fredericka and Dorotea, the first thing that occurs is the girls stumble upon the body of a dead man on a goat path. When some of the local settlers claim his death was from a bear or wolf attack, the midwife, Maija, knows something is strange about the place. The man was murdered in her opinion, and she wants to know why. When the local priest is called to further investigate the death, he places some trust in the newcomer to help provide proof that the man was murdered. Could the murderer be amongst the local Lapp population? The Lapps are mysterious and are often blamed for the series of disappearances from previous years. Worse, could it be someone from one of the local families scattered at the base of the mountain. When Paavo leaves to find work back at the coast, Maiva must keep herself and her girls from starving as the snow deepens and the temperatures plummet. The world at Blackasen Mountain becomes a game of survival where superstitions rule and mysterious rumors swirl about with the snow. One of the most effected is Fredericka, the oldest of the daughters. She too is pulled into the mystery of the murdered man and is compelled to reveal the killer as she learns more and more about the murdered man and the small population of people who surround her. This is an interesting tale that I enjoyed reading. I especially enjoyed reading this during the stormy weather we have had recently. I didn't know a lot about the Lapps or the area going into the book and I found the daily lives of these settlers very interesting. The harsh winter and the politics and superstitions of the area made for an intriguing story. I give this story an A+ for atmosphere and a B- for plot and character development. All around this was an interesting tale told in a unique setting and location.

It is lyrical and dour, gloomy and righteous. There is a spiritual battle between a state enforced Christianity and the native beliefs of the Lapp (Sami) people. If you didn't already know, you get a solid lesson in the regional unending war involving the Finns, the Swedes and the Russians. I felt deeply invested in the main characters and the protagonist's drive to solve the crimes committed in their new home in rural northern Sweden. This is by no means a quick read; the pacing is quite slow for the first 80% of the book. This allows the author to invest time in the natural world; she does explore the harsh environment and how it impacts day to day life. I felt steeped in the tight weave of law, faith and mores that were bound to every soul in town. You also feel the pull of the main family's roots in Ostrobothnia, a coastal region of western Finland. My only concern with the book was that after a glacial advance, the book ends with a whirlwind of reveal. It was a bit too fast and rushed for me after so long an investment. I felt like saying "Wait a minute! Slow down!". Not everything is tied up neatly and you are left to ponder some of the more mystical elements on your own.I am very familiar with the terrain of this book, having traveled there and studied it in school. I am uncertain if those without a similar background will find it confusing. There is very spare use of non-English terms so that should not be a deterrent. Overall, I was very satisfied with this work and feel that the author has a strong start to a writing career.Fans of Scandinavian crime and mystery literature should find this very engaging.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sacrificial love By Della Anne S. This Alden novel was disappointing. Up until the last few chapters ,it appeared to possess all the fine qualities of her other novels and novellas with strong well drawn characters and an well defined by plot reflecting a theme. In this case, ALden shows us what sacrificial love means in the character of Laurence, who honors both his temporal and heavenly Father by devoting himself to the care of his family. He lays his own his own plans for higher education., and personal happiness. With a Christ like nature , he accepts the mantle of responsibility for the family's welfare. His slightly younger brother ,Porter, refuses to share these duties. He chooses to continue with his own agenda, promoting himself as fulfilling the lifelong wish of their father for his son's education. Somehow he manages to convince everyone that his plans are the only just course while projecting a false image of humilityMy disenchantment with was in the rushed resolution and wrap up of events.. It left this reader dissatisfied-a first for me in an Alden book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. worth reading, inspiring By Amazon Customer This book gave me reason to think and to appreciate some old fashioned values of humility. In some ways I thought of the classic "It's A Wonderful Life as I read this book. It was a moving story and the honor of self-sacrifice for the sake of family and the eventually good outcome of it
