Soon the farm prospers and once again Lawrence’s dream is close enough to touch, when family needs call for yet another sacrifice. Does Lawrence have the strength to again postpone his own heart’s desire for the people he loves? This touching story of faith and family duty was first published in 1898.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sacrificial love By Della Anne S. This Alden novel was disappointing. Up until the last few chapters ,it appeared to possess all the fine qualities of her other novels and novellas with strong well drawn characters and an well defined by plot reflecting a theme. In this case, ALden shows us what sacrificial love means in the character of Laurence, who honors both his temporal and heavenly Father by devoting himself to the care of his family. He lays his own his own plans for higher education., and personal happiness. With a Christ like nature , he accepts the mantle of responsibility for the family's welfare. His slightly younger brother ,Porter, refuses to share these duties. He chooses to continue with his own agenda, promoting himself as fulfilling the lifelong wish of their father for his son's education. Somehow he manages to convince everyone that his plans are the only just course while projecting a false image of humilityMy disenchantment with was in the rushed resolution and wrap up of events.. It left this reader dissatisfied-a first for me in an Alden book.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. worth reading, inspiring By Amazon Customer This book gave me reason to think and to appreciate some old fashioned values of humility. In some ways I thought of the classic "It's A Wonderful Life as I read this book. It was a moving story and the honor of self-sacrifice for the sake of family and the eventually good outcome of it
