Yoder Plot Boiler is the fifth book in the A Black Cat Bookshop Mystery series.Darla Pettistone is back in her bookshop and is very pleased with the remodeling that took place while she and her black cat, Hamlet, were in Florida. As is Robert, her teenaged clerk, who is now the stores Barista. The 4th of July is just around the corner and Darla, with the help of some of the other shop owners are planning a block party to celebrate the 4th and hopefully to promote their shops and generate additional revenue for everyone. But George King, owner of Perky's Coffee Shop, is disgruntled about Darla's coffee bar, claiming that is hurting his business. Darla, having overheard some young ballet students of Penelope Winston's dance studio, talking about a “special blend” coffee that Perky's is selling. As the block party is about to wrap up Darla is heading to Perky's to confront them about the possbile illegal substance in their special blend coffee, but instead finds George King's wife is lying dead at the entrance to the shop. Later the body of Penelope Winston is found dead. With the help of her good friend and PI, Jacqueline “Jake” Martelli, Darla is off investigating before any more shop owners meet their demise. As in the previous books James, her store manager, is back to do what he does best, manage the store and give Darla the find to sleuth. Hamlet continues to provide Darla with clues and ends up saving the day. Also Darla gets some disturbing news about Reese, the hunky detective that she likes to have little interest in.Will be watching for the next book in this series.

By Lisa Ks Book Reviews PLOT BOILER is an example of how a series can get better and better with each installment.I’ll admit that the first Black Cat mystery, DOUBLE BOOKED FOR DEATH, was not my favorite book. Therefore I wondered if I’d ever care for the series. Author Ali Brandon has really grown this series into a solid one. I just love the addition of the coffee bar to the bookstore. It’s exactly what was needed. PLOT BOILER is the best installment to date.Ms. Brandon keeps the action going in this story with not one, but multiple deaths. The story is fast paced and wonderfully plotted. A whodunit that will kept me guessing, and a finale that I never saw coming.I’m looking forward to the next tome author Brandon has brewing for us!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A well-written mystery! By OpenBookSociety dot com Brought to you by OBS Reviewer JeanieWhat a fun, engaging read! Well, except for the murders. Hamlet is a cat with a definite ‘tude and a nose for clues. He has an opinion about most people who are privileged to meet him, from children who have seen him on YouTube and want their pictures taken with him to those who visit the shop for the first time. Even though he came with Pettistone’s Fine Books in Brooklyn, NY when Darla inherited it from her great aunt, I don’t think Darla would give him up for all the books in Brooklyn. Good thing, since Hammy really owns Darla! Pettistone’s has caffeine, books, and a cat…it just doesn’t get any better!Darla contributed many hours to get together the vendors on this block of historic brownstones to have an outdoor 4th of July block party. As final preparations are made for decorating, replacing a last-minute band back-out, and placing display tables and cases, Darla had one more task to complete – get the balance of the shared entry fee from the owners of Perky’s Coffee Shop. George King, the self-proclaimed King of Coffee, had protested the addition of the coffee bar at Pettistone’s, and was less than excited about the block party, so Darla tread softly – and George referred her to his lovely wife, Livvy. Darla also hoped to learn more about a special coffee blend she heard some young people discussing their preference for. What a special blend it was! Very expensive…how could teens afford it?The block party was a success; even the summer heat and humidity didn’t stop the steady flow of folks who sampled free or reduced-price wares from the shops, listened to the unique band, watched Martial Arts demos and the dance school’s “flash mob”, even coming to meet Hamlet, the Youtube star. Nobody was prepared for the shocking end of day, though, when Hamlet sensed the way to Livvy King, dead near the front of Perky’s while her husband had napped at their booth. Then within a matter of hours, the owner of the dance studio – a respected ballerina – was also found dead in another shop.As the fifth novel in the Black Cat Bookshop Mystery series, Plot Boiler could be enjoyed as a stand-alone or within the series – but I encourage you to enjoy the whole series! While the author thoroughly developed the primary characters early on, with each mystery we see new facets, strengths, and talents in them. I like best friends Darla and Jake; their diverse ages and backgrounds contribute as much to their friendship as their common interests. Hamlet, of course, ‘knows’ he is the star (well, isn’t he?) and without his presence, the bookshop and the series would not be the same. This cat with a ‘tude brings entertainment, a sense of safety and well-being, and a whimsical whisker of imagination to all who come in contact with him!The characters specific to this novel or introduced for the first time are well-suited to their defined roles. Even Detective Fiorello “Fi” Reese’s fiancée, Connie, while certainly out-of-character for his personality, was an interesting woman. Hopefully we haven’t seen the last of her! Pinky, leader of the band that Darla’s barista Robert referred for a last-minute fill-in, had unexpected talent. The newbies also continue to educate me, this time introducing me to some current slang. Catching up with familiar friends and meeting new ones has been an absolute blast!Plot Boiler is very well-organized and thoroughly executed; I can’t imagine any loose threads at the close of the day. The means of death was certainly a surprise for me; it was one of the plot twists that kept me on my toes! While like Darla I disagreed with the cops’ line of thinking, suspects and motives just would not match up for me. This reader was stumped, as an excellent mystery can do, until it was too late, so it’s a good thing Darla wasn’t waiting for me to figure it out! I do, however, see that this is a four-paws and a tail UP tale and highly recommend this cozy to cat, book, and mystery lovers who appreciate well-written mysteries. Plot Boiler has given me hours of feline fun without additional feline chores; Ali Brandon has designed an amazing bookstore where I can’t wait to spend more time! PS Thank you, Ali, for the scoop on Livvy’s health challenge – perhaps your gentle info will help more understand…*OBS would like to thank the publisher for supplying a free copy of this title in exchange for an honest review as part of their ongoing blog tour*

The Blue Enchantress How does a British Admiral’s daughter end up being sold as a slave on the auction block in St. Kitts? Could it be the loss of her mother, the verbal abuse of a strict father, the violation by a family member? Or maybe that her sister is a pirate! All these things and more drove Hope Westcott to seek love and value in the arms of unscrupulous men and hence into this dire situation. Nathaniel Mason has loved Hope from afar for years, but her scandalous behavior, along with his efforts to start a shipping company, have kept him at a distance. Yet when he sees Hope on the auction block, how much of that security will he risk to save her? The Raven Saint Grace Westcott has spent her entire life serving God and helping the poor. This series will take you on an adventure that you won't soon forget. And now all three books are in one set! Clean, fun, adventurous and Christ-centered....can't pass it up!

Word of warning to parents, I'm not sure how much of her books I would let even teenage kids read. If I was still a teenager with roaring hormones, reading many of the scenes in her books would not help me keep my thoughts pure. Read one and judge for yourself but you'll have a great adventure while you do!

Free PDF Ebook The Encyclopedia of Trouble and Spaciousness, by Rebecca Solnit

The incomparable Rebecca Solnit, author of more than a dozen acclaimed, prizewinning books of nonfiction including Men Explain Things To Me, brings the same dazzling writing to the essays in The Encyclopedia of Trouble and Spaciousness; hailed by the Los Angeles Times as "globally wide-ranging and topically urgent and the Boston Globe as "luminous and precise.". As the title suggests, the territory of Solnit’s concerns is vast, and in her signature alchemical style she combines commentary on history, justice, war and peace, and explorations of place, art, and community, all while writing with the lyricism of a poet to achieve incandescence and wisdom.Gathered here are celebrated iconic essays along with little-known pieces that create a powerful survey of the world we live in, from the jungles of the Zapatistas in Mexico to the splendors of the Arctic. This rich collection tours places as diverse as Haiti and Iceland; movements like Occupy Wall Street and the Arab Spring; an original take on the question of who did Henry David Thoreau’s laundry; and a searching look at what the hatred of country music really means.Solnit moves nimbly from Orwell to Elvis, to contemporary urban gardening to 1970s California macramé and punk rock, and on to searing questions about the environment, freedom, family, class, work, and friendship. It’s no wonder she’s been compared in Bookforum to Susan Sontag and Annie Dillard and in the San Francisco Chronicle to Joan Didion. The Encyclopedia of Trouble and Spaciousness proves Rebecca Solnit worthy of the accolades and honors she’s received. Rarely can a reader find such penetrating critiques of our time and its failures leavened with such generous heapings of hope. Solnit looks back to history and the progress of political movements to find an antidote to despair in what many feel as lost causes. In its encyclopedic reach and its generous compassion, Solnit’s collection charts a way through the thickets of our complex social and political worlds. Her essays are a beacon for readers looking for alternative ideas in these imperiled times.

Review "What to call a journalist who writes about place while avoiding the subjects of luxury hotels, remote restaurants and urbane oddities? Not a travel writer, surely. And not an adventurer. It's really an anthology disguised as an encyclopedia. But no matter what label you attach to it, the important thing to remember about this book is that it was written by Rebecca Solnit, one of the best nonfiction writers working today." —Chicago Tribune

She's my new passion -- I can't get over how brilliant this writer is. I love the way her mind works, and the way she creates the movement of that mind on the page. It's so clear that it's luminous. She allows the reader to see how ideas emerge, develop, deepen, connect to other ideas, grow, change, and disappear. I am utterly fascinated with everything she writes. The only problem I can see with her is that I'm a writer trying to work in a similar vein, and she has already done the "new personal essay" genre so brilliantly that no one will ever do better. I can only hope to do different, and to learn from her. If you love ideas, and the English language, read all of her books.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting Story But Riddled With Grammar Problems By Daniel Bowen A warlock, a prophecy, a demanding father, and antiques.Conner is a wizard with fire talent. He does as his father commands. I don't know how old Conner is, but he's now at the point where he wants a relationship. In this case a guy at work is spiking his interest, Scott.Scott has no magical ability but does have an affinity for antiques. And it's thru his job of cataloguing and verifying antiques where he gets to know Conner. Their relationship is slow building. Conner has to keep his magical abilities hidden and his status as a warlock. Scott is openly gay yet is shy, too afraid that Conner is straight, and doesn't act on his feelings. So they hold back from each other, keeping secrets, and until courage takes over.Now. The story interested me but the execution was awful. There are punctuation mistakes, fragmented sentences, wrong word placement, and repeated misspelled words. Examples are:Instead of couch it was coach.Beginning chapter: Prophecy is wrongly spelled. Instead it is prophesy and that misspelling is repeated throughout the story.Yeah the ears tearing up happened when Scott was confiding in Jade that Conner must be gay -- He bit my bagel!Chapter 4 opens: "The tram doors swung wide open. I shuffled through a crowd of college students, finally freeing myself from metal box." That followed with a sentence with misplaced commas. Is hell capitalized? It is here. As are Warlocks, Witches, and Demons, but not mortals. A hair style is capitalized: ". . . black Mohawk style hair. . . "Fragmented sentences. Case in point the fire flower Conner makes for Scott: Sentences are: "Or better yet." "A green stem, white petals, a yellow center."It's like part of the story was passed off to someone else, someone that didn't take the time to edit. I agree with what another reviewer wrote - It's like the work was started by one person and someone else contributed. Someone that doesn't know English grammar. This is a low point in Wolf Specter's work. Very disappointing. - Dan's Wife

Usually it's the characters that make me hate a story, but this time it was mostly everything seems. Connor's dad is an ashore, Matilda is a birch that needed to be slapped and have her uterus removed and her lips sown shut, and the entire war with the witches is a farce. Even at the end, nothing is clear. Which side was good, which side was bad? Both, probably. It just felt like so much was left out and I don't think there is a sequel. Not to mention the editing is lacking. The most reoccurring mistake was using a conjugation of "come on" as "common" which would be fine except "common" is already a word, like the "common people". Yeah, the book is filled with mistakes like that. But it was good enough to read on the car ride home, and I finished it, so three stars.

‘A treat for any fan of the master detective.’- Tom Kasey, best-selling author of Cold Kill. Greg Hargreaves is an Australian-American writer, struggling to make ends meet in Los Angeles by selling scripts to movie producers. But his career takes a nose-dive when he receives an invitation to give evidence before a division of the Un-American Activities Committee, in the midst of the ‘red scare’ of the Fifties, simply on account of an anti-Hitler article he wrote for a magazine whilst at college… On the advice of a friend, he moves to London, to allow the whole thing to blow over. He arrives alone, with nothing but a small suitcase, a wad of cash, and his typewriter… Hargreaves eventually settles on a set of rooms in Hudson House, on Baker Street, which are being let remarkably cheaply, by a decidedly shifty landlord… On first inspection, Greg Hargreaves marvels at his good fortune at acquiring a room at such a good price. It is only when he is taking his morning coffee the following day that the reason behind the low cost rooms becomes transparent – they are haunted by the ghost of Sherlock Holmes! Surprisingly, Hargreaves is delighted at the discovery. Holmes tells Hargreaves all about his previous adventures with Doctor Watson and proves quite inspirational for a detective movie Hargreaves is working on… Soon, however, events in the British film industry take a darker turn, and Sherlock finds himself tasked with clearing his new friend and flatmate of a violent murder; a task made all the more tricky by the fact that he is no longer alive… Sherlock Holmes: The Ghost of Baker Street is a light-hearted treat for Sherlock enthusiasts which will keep you guessing until the very last page.

By Raven Sherlock Holmes: The Ghost of Baker Street by Val AndrewsGreg Hargreaves is an American screen writer who has moved to London after being blacklisted by Senator Joseph McCarthy. Looking around for a place to stay, he comes across the Hudson House on Baker Street. To his surprise the rooms are nice and the rent low enough to afford. It is only after moving in that Hargreaves discovers why the rooms came so cheap. The Hudson House, 221B Baker Street is being haunted by its former tenant—Sherlock Holmes!Oddly enough, the ghost of Holmes and Greg Hargreaves get along rather well. As Hargreaves is writing up a screen play to present to a producer at the recommendation of Orson Wells, Holmes has advice which improves the final product. Thus is born Septimus Walton and his sidekick, the Reverend Henry McCombe. Later the Walton character would be changed to a “Miss Walton.” Both Walton and the Reverend are enthusiastic anglers.McCarthy has sent an aide to London, a Lionel Craig. Craig winds up murdered and the police suspect someone on a list McCarthy has given Craig must be guilty of the crime. The List includes Greg Hargreaves, Orson Wells, Wayne Johnson, Miss Winifred Shultz, and Miss Peppy Clovis. All have varying degrees of secrets in their lives they might not want revealed.Interesting take on a Sherlock Holmes story! But our hero was not dead—or maybe he is!Quoth the Raven…

DOWNLOAD FOR FREE WITH KINDLE UNLIMITED On this finale, will Elizabeth and Jonas reconciled their own differences to find love and peace? From an idyllic setting in a small Amish community to a bustling family life, nothing should be amiss for a young girl preparing to become an adult. However, a chance meeting at her sister’s wedding has caused everything in her life to change, for better or worse not yet determined. A cold winter lies ahead for the Springer family, but warmth and friendship brighten the darkness. Why is she always tired and why do her things keep disappearing in the middle of the night? For seventeen-year-old Elizabeth Springer, nothing is what it appears in life, especially when it comes to the mystery surrounding her daily fatigue and missing personal items. Instead of dwelling on the problem, she attempts to soldier on, although a secret kept from her parents may be her undoing. A long-held secret kept by her own parents threatens to shatter her entire universe, the ideas she’d so carefully crafted now crumbling in her fingertips. Young Jonas Beller, an Amish young man who happens to meet a beautiful girl at the wedding of his relative, has no plans for marriage. He’s content living his life with his parents, more concerned about his cat Jumper’s health problems. Everything changes with that brief encounter, including a young man’s stance on faith and truth. Tragedy and lies attempt to unravel the budding romance, causing questions for both parties and their families. Sometimes the truth can set one free, but it is not without consequences, as Elizabeth and Jonas—and especially young Elizabeth’s mother—must learn. Can Jonas find peace with Elizabeth’s past and uncertain future? Will Elizabeth ever be able to trust again when she learns her mother’s secret? Sam is shocked by Osman’s bold seduction—and even more surprised when she finds herself falling under his spell. In Bought for the Sheikh, royal heir Zadir Al Kilanjar is determined to woo renowned architect Veronica Baxter to his homeland of Ubar to design his palace—and become his wife. With her career in high gear and her heart surrounded by more stone walls than her projects, she’s resolved to resist Zadir’s advances—but he’s just as determined to win her. In A Christmas Wedding, Sam Al Kilanjar attempts to negotiate her first holiday season in a country with different customs, a big fat Ubarite wedding and the arrival of her drama-loving family, all without losing her mind—or her beloved, who is called away to deal with a crisis on the eve of their wedding. Veronica Baxter is excited about her wedding to Zadir Al Kilanjar, but worries that her estranged parents will ruin everything. Can they find Christmas miracles among the madness and enjoy the weddings they’ve dreamed of? In Return of the Rebel Sheikh Widowed queen Aliyah has resigned herself to a life of loneliness until a rough-mannered stranger intrudes on her solitude. A professional warrior and protector, Gibran has kept his distance from the palace he once called home--until his royal half brothers invite him into their midst. By profession and inclination, he keeps his emotions on lockdown, but finds himself falling under Aliyah’s quiet spell. Will these two lonely people dare to seize the love they crave? In Captivated by the Sheikh, Amahd Al Kilanjar is all work and no play. Yes, he needs to choose a sensible and traditional wife and produce an heir, but he’ll fit that into his schedule when the time is right…or so he thinks. Mackenzie “Mac” Malone travels to Ubar for a job in the oil fields, and is startled when an innocent flirtation with a handsome stranger leads to an explosive kiss. A Texas country girl and a prince from an ancient dynasty? Impossible, surely…or is it? Sign up for the new release newsletter at www.jenlewis.com.
