The third stand-alone book in A Learning Experience ... In the wake of Earth’s collapse into chaos, Captain Hoshiko Stuart made the mistake of speaking her mind - and was exiled six months from Sol to a naval base in an unexplored and uncontacted sector. Placed in command of a single squadron of starships, she expected nothing but boredom. But when she discovers an alien race threatening to exterminate all other races within the sector, Hoshiko and her squadron are drawn into a war to stop them, even if it means forging an alliance with aliens who may themselves become a threat to humanity and building an empire that may alienate her from her family once and for all. [Like my other self-published Kindle books, The Black Sheep is DRM-free. You may reformat it as you choose. There is a large sample of the text – and my other books – on my site: chrishanger.net. Graf In this book, Nuttall adds a satisfying volume to the "A Learning Experience" series of books which describe the emergence of humanity onto the cosmic stage. In this book, Captain Hoshiko Stuart gets sent to a system six months away from the Solar Union as punishment for speaking out of turn to the media. Of course, like her counterpart Honor Harrington, she makes the most of her detached duty basing her decisions to start and support an alliance against a genocidal species on ethical beliefs. She has guts and know that her choices may condemn her once command authority requires her to justify what she's done. Even so, she makes the choice to do what is right in her eyes. If you enjoy the Harrington or Hornblower books, you will enjoy this one as well. Though it is helpful to have read the earlier books in this series, it's not absolutely necessary.

I have really enjoyed the different series he has written and seen how the writing has improved over time. I especially enjoy his perspective and analysis of current world events in the afterwords of his books and how they tie the story to historical/current events. While I may not be a deep thinker and tracker of current events and the hash our selfserving lying politicians are making of our country, I am a US Army veteran (pre desert storm) and find myself quite in agreement with much of his analysis. I just wish all the sheeple in the US had a little more global perspective and concern over the direction we are being taken and what is going to happen to western society, morals and values over the next 50 years unless we actually take a harsh stand and say enough! A Learning Experience series shows one possible direction that more people should think about as a result of the consequences of our current "politically correct" environment. Real men don't get offended. Deal with it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Simplistic, trite, lacking in depth and realism By Alan I'm sorry, I wanted to like this book, I wanted to like the series. The problems began in the first book and just kept on going, the good guys too good, the bad guys too bad. The tactical and technological problems just glossed over. If Webers "Honorverse" is a ten, this is a four. There is one likeable character in the entire third book, which reads like a Flash Gordon serial. I could go on, but I just don't care enough. If you're 14 you may enjoy yourself, otherwise, have a beer and watch a ball game.

Andrew and Lavinia Riley are on their honeymoon at an African game lodge when they meet a Texan trophy hunter. Andrew, a journalist, senses a timely story about lion hunting, and engages a local guide to learn how the lions are tracked in this remote borderland of north Tanzania. Andrew finds lions, but his inquiries draw him into a different type of danger altogether – with local tribesmen. Soon, his only hope for survival lies in an unexpected source. ‘The murder of the lion Cecil outraged people all over the world. Daniel’s reaction was to write this terrific story, with a totally unexpected twist. I read it in one sitting.’ John Rendall, animal conservationist and author of A Lion called Christian Daniel Pembrey is the author of The Candidate: A Luxembourg Thriller. He is drawn to psychological suspense stories with a strong sense of location. His Amsterdam detective series, The Harbour Master, will be published by No Exit Press in 2016. When he is not writing, he loves to travel and meet interesting new people. To receive occasional email updates and free exclusive content, please sign up at www.danielpembrey.com. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Book Review: Who is the real predator lion or man? By Shannon Gonzalez Take a short safari in this action packed novella as you follow Andrew Riley, a Times journalist, on an adventure of his lifetime. On his honeymoon he is staying at Three Trees Lodge with his new wife when he meets Dr. Jim Patterson, a trophy hunter. Patterson is celebrating his latest hunt the night before his departure back to Texas.Andrew questions his personal stance on a strongly held belief and follows a lead into the heart of trouble. He wanted to investigate the perspective from a hunter's point of view. While he knew the inherent dangers ironically he didn't know he'd be walking into the lion's den as the saying goes. This story delves into immediate controversy as the animal rights groups contest the game hunting, the hunters' groups protest any interference and the people of Africa have their own opinion of what to do with the lions that share their habitat. Add in political-religious strife and you have a hothouse of differing opinions fighting for dominance. After the controversial Cecil-the-lion media frenzy as of late, this story sheds light on a few other views not heard in the Western media. In this story territorial hierarchy takes on a whole new meaning adding another dimension of danger to our journalist and his wife. It really begs the question just how far will journalists go to get the story? The Lion Hunter is a fascinating look into what can happen in the Savannah. Entertaining and captivating this is a Kindle Single you don't want to miss!Be sure to check out Daniel Pembrey's series The Harbor Master and other works at http://danielpembrey(dot)com Sign up for the newsletter to hear when his 2 newest books will be released.FTC Disclaimer: I was given an ARC of this title for review purposes only, no other compensation was awarded.

By DTChantel Dark, mysterious, untamed, wild.... these are words that come to mind when you think of the brooding and mystical continent of Africa. And they are also words that should come to mind when reading Daniel Pembrey's wonderfully evocative new novella, "The Lion Hunter."I was thrilled to see that Daniel had penned a story in one of my favorite locales and his tale of suspense more than did justice to the setting. Although the movie is not set in Africa, this story made me think of 1932's "The Most Dangerous Game," in which underlying forces are at work and things are not always what they seem. The author does a wonderful job building suspense right from the beginning and from the opening sentences, a feeling of dread began to build. While reading, I also felt a bit of nostalgia for some of the great spy and thriller literature of the 60s and 70s, as this story was evocative of that time period, even though it's set in modern day. I think that may be because Africa itself seems to exist outside time and space, and with it's dark and troubling history, it seems possible that anything can happen there.**I was given a free copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review**

The story has great pace, makes you feel like you are there on safari with its fine detail and contains one of Pembrey's trademark twists. The story engages you from start to finish and I would highly recommend.

A big state with many small places. After a disastrous night out, Dani is forced to flee false accusations, scorn and the law. She creates a subterfuge and sneaks away from her Southwest desert life. Accompanied by her friend, Teresa, and an adopted orphan cat, Dani ends up in a small island community in Southeast Alaska. Life in the cool rainforest around Storm Bay forces Dani to face new challenges. Then she meets Bryce Hunter, teacher, logger, fisherman and handsome. If you like Alaska stories, you’ll love South To Alaska, a tale with romance, suspense, humor and an authentic representation of life on a remote island. Like other stories written my Lorna Woods, the story is clean, fast paced and pleasant to read. The crisp style, vivid descriptions and real life events keep the pages turning.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Need a good read about forgiveness By Donna Hues Need a good read about forgiveness, redemption and the challenge of being a "truth-teller" even if it means loosing the one you love, your friends and family with jail time the end result? Lorna Woods weaves an outstanding story set in Southwest Alaska among loggers trying to establish a viable industry for the indigenous people. Roughing it as cook in a canvas tent, hauling water for cooking and paying attention for bears, Dani learns caring for others means investing in their lives. Hard decisions must be made that will affect everyone's lives. A read that will hold you in suspense to the end.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Immersed in the story, not in the water. By Stanley E. Torrence An excellent story based on a part of Alaska not often visited. I fully enjoyed the difficulties of living in the bear infested island and the trials and tribulations of dealing with her emotions and relating to her new neighbors. Keeping a terrible secret, falling in love and cooking in a tent to feed a small logging operation. The characters are clearly described and the kind you would either avoid or want to be friends of. A compelling drama. worthy of your time reading.

I’m doing the best I can. Under the circumstances, I don’t think Mom has room to complain. “Dani do this. Don’t do that. Dani, won’t you think of your father?” When don’t I think about my father? An IED in Afghanistan wrecked his brain and now he exists in a hospital bed in the living room. My world revolves around caring for him and aiding his recovery. All I can do is think about my dad, our past, and the bleak future that is all but certain. Maybe I have the occasional drink, perhaps I use pot to escape, and yeah, my friends aren’t winning any public service awards. But my grades are decent, I mostly stay out of trouble, and I go to every damn therapy session she sends me to. Apparently that isn’t good enough, because now I’m getting shipped away to Tellure Hollow for the winter. Cousin Bryan “The Blizzard” and his perfect perky wife, Liz, have kindly opened their doors to the troubled teen in the family. With an arsonist setting fire to the town and a massive blizzard closing in on us, I’m starting to think these two are always at the epicenter of crazy drama. Thanks, Mom! Merry Christmas to you too. Troubled is a short story prequel to the romantic suspense novel, Trapped with the Blizzard. Readers get to meet Dani Marsh, Bryan "The Blizzard" Marsh's cousin, and one of the main characters in the winter sports standalone. The subject matter in this short is on the dark side and certainly for adults only. Caught by the Blizzard, Saved by the Blizzard, and Devoted to the Blizzard precede this prequel, but don't need to be read in order to appreciate it.

Troubled is a must read before you read the next book. I love that we get a little insight into what is going on with Dani in this book. It makes a lot of the actions that happen during the events in Trapped make sense. And as I have stated in other reviews, Adele is a fantastic writer and storyteller. I am never disappointed in anything that she writes :)

Bringing His Baby Home: A Billionaire Romance Serial, Book 4 (The Greek Tycoon), by Kay Brody

About the Author My name is Kay Brody! I'm a Jersey Girl who traveled all the way to the University of Missouri-Columbia to get a degree in Journalism and am now back in the Garden State trying to make my way in life as a writer! By day I work as a court reporter but by night I feed my addiction to pop culture and WRITE, WRITE, WRITE! And I am now officially in love with Amazon because it has given me the opportunity to get my thoughts, hopes and innermost desires out into the world for everyone to read (I hope!!!) While I adore all things reality television, fashion, music & travel, my true loves are reading & writing. I am a hopeless romantic & a fan of laughing until my face hurts and my writing is true to those interests: I write romance (sometimes with a touch suspense or comedy, always with a splash of naughtiness...) as well as non-fiction & trivia books on topics ranging from books & movies to the rich & famous. And while the latter may not be considered high-art, it's just plain FUN! (And you know you love it!!!) Please read my books and then drop me a line to tell me what you thought! And if you like them, PLEASE review them for me so others know! Every 5-star rating brings me one step closer to slamming that courtroom door behind me for good so I can keep my butt right here in this high-back chair, enjoying the sound of freshly-manicured fingernails on the keyboard from sunrise to sunset! (It may not be as musical as the "clacking" sound of a real, old-fashioned typewriter but it's a close second!) Thank you for checking me out and please contact me if you have any questions or comments! Kay

Yesterday… the world changed. Most remember it as a Tuesday; others as a Thursday, but it didn’t matter. Days became as inconsequential as a fly in the swarm. The only thing that truly mattered was that you got to see one more and a friend or family member could see it with you. Whether that was lucky or not depended upon the level of blood the day delivered. The long awaited weekend and the looming dread of Monday morning disappeared into a distant memory, much like the lives of so many people who now marched to feed upon the living. One more day of life; one more day to try to set things right, one more day of grizzled gore and one more day to –try- for the three who cared. This was what each day now brought as the basis of survival and it was more than some could handle. Three cops doing their best, find themselves surrounded by undead and insurmountable challenges as they try to ensure the survival of humanity. Fast zombies, slow zombies and a sociopath determined to thwart their goals. Zombies hell bent on feeding upon the flesh of the living as the evil mind lusts for terror. Thousands flock to their banner to fight, to survive to stand beside those who think, feel and breathe. Love comes easy when all else is lost, trust is a given when there is no one else as courage and cowardice walk hand in hand.

Phelps Joseph Hansen has crafted a dark and apocalyptic world in Zombie Rush, and he introduced us to characters that are well developed and relate-able. In Zombie Rush II he shows us why the living dead are not the only things to fear, because there is a danger that threatens to consume Lisa Reynolds if its not stopped.I cannot heap enough praise on this story and the author.I have read literally tons of zombpoc stories and he has come up with tactics and angles that I never would have thought of. Do yourself a favor and read Zombie Rush I and II. Then give "Cousin Sonny" a look

The characters are complex and evolving and the action is nerve wracking as Lisa, Krupp and Skitter Pop run from one mess to the next. Throw in an insane, brilliant serial killer and the unstoppable battering ram that is Dean Solomon and you have a real roller coaster of a story here. More than just a zombie show, this book is also an examination of how people react to a crisis and seemingly hopeless situations.I was sucked into the story with the first book and this second volume never even slows down. Be warned though. There are some truly disturbing passages in this book, so bring a strong stomach to the table, but I thought the payoff was worth the temporary discomfort. I'll never be able to look at beef jerky the same way, either.

Dudley This series is a fresh breath (well, maybe a less rotten breath, considering the subject) of air. Heroes are heroes, unlikely heroes become heroes, and Hansen seems to have a fine handle on the qualities of leadership needed to survive a zombie apocalypse; love that construction equipment, by the way. My only problem is that you need to write faster, Joe! Nice work by your editorial crew as well. Keep these stories coning!

The critic Morris Dickstein has said that John Williams’s Stoner “is something much rarer than a great novel – it is a perfect novel,” and in the last decade this austere and deeply moving tale of a Midwestern college professor has been embraced by readers all over the world. Here, to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Stoner, NYRB Classics offers a special hardback edition of the book that also includes a previously unpublished correspondence between John Williams and his agent about its writing and publication.

Stoner: 50th Anniversary Edition (New York Review Books Classics), by John Williams

Review “A beautiful, sad, utterly convincing account of an entire life…I’m amazed a novel this good escaped general attention for so long.”  —Ian McEwan“One of the great unheralded 20th-century American novels …Almost perfect.” —Bret Easton Ellis“Stoner is a novel of an ordinary life, an examination of a quiet tragedy, the work of a great but little-known writer.” —Ruth Rendell“A beautiful and moving novel, as sweeping, intimate, and mysterious as life itself.” —Geoff Dyer“I have read few novels as deep and as clear as Stoner. It deserves to be called a quiet classic of American literature.” —Chad Harbach“The most beautiful book in the world.”  —Emma Straub"A poignant campus novel from the mid-'60s—an unjustly neglected gem." —Nick Hornby, People“The book begins boldly with a mention of Stoner’s death, and a nod to his profound averageness: ‘Few students remembered him with any sharpness after they had taken his courses.’ By the end, though, Williams has made Stoner’s disappointing life into such a deep and honest portrait, so unsoftened and unromanticized, that it’s quietly breathtaking.”—The Boston Globe   “Williams’ descriptions of the experience of reading both elucidate and evince the pleasures of literary language; the ‘minute, strange, and unexpected combinations of letters and words’ in which Stoner finds joy are re-enacted in Williams’ own perfect fusion of words.”—n+1   “Stoner, by John Williams, is a slim novel, and not a particularly joyous one. But it is so quietly beautiful and moving, so precisely constructed, that you want to read it in one sitting and enjoy being in it, altered somehow, as if you have been allowed to wear an exquisitely tailored garment that you don’t want to take off.”—The Globe and Mail    “One of the great forgotten novels of the past century. I have bought at least 50 copies of it in the past few years, using it as a gift for friends...The book is so beautifully paced and cadenced that it deserves the status of classic.”—Colum McCann, Top 10 Novels, The Guardian   “Stoner is undeniably a great book, but I can also understand why it isn’t a sentimental favorite in its native land. You could almost describe it as an anti-Gatsby...Part of Stoner’s greatness is that it sees life whole and as it is, without delusion yet without despair...The novel embodies the very virtues it exalts, the same virtues that probably relegate it, like its titular hero, to its perpetual place in the shade. But the book, like professor William Stoner, isn’t out to win popularity contests. It endures, illumined from within.”—Tim Kreider, The New Yorker   “It’s simply a novel about a guy who goes to college and becomes a teacher. But it’s one of the most fascinating things that you’ve ever come across.”—Tom Hanks, Time   “Stoner is written in the most plainspoken of styles...Its hero is an obscure academic who endures a series of personal and professional agonies. Yet the novel is utterly riveting, and for one simple reason: because the author, John Williams, treats his characters with such tender and ruthless honesty that we cannot help but love them.”—Steve Almond, Tin House   “The best book I read in 2007 was Stoner by John Williams. It’s perhaps the best book I’ve read in years.”—Stephen Elliott, The Believer   “John Williams’s Stoner is something rarer than a great novel—it is a perfect novel, so well told and beautifully written, so deeply moving, that it takes your breath away.”—The New York Times Book Review   “Williams didn’t write much compared with some novelists, but everything he did was exceedingly fine...it’s a shame that he’s not more often read today...But it’s great that at least two of his novels [Stoner, Butcher’s Crossing] have found their way back into print.”—The Denver Post   “A masterly portrait of a truly virtuous and dedicated man.”—The New Yorker   “Why isn’t this book famous...Very few novels in English, or literary productions of any kind, have come anywhere near its level for human wisdom or as a work of art.”—C. P. Snow   “Serious, beautiful and affecting, what makes Stoner so impressive is the contained intensity the author and character share.”—Irving Howe, The New Republic   “A quiet but resonant achievement.”—The Times Literary Supplement   “Perhaps the greatest example of minimalism I’ve ever read...Stoner is a story of great hope for the writer who cares about her work.”—Stephen Elliott   “Stoner by John Williams, contains what is no doubt my favorite literary romance of all time. William Stoner is well into his 40s, and mired in an unhappy marriage, when he meets Katherine, another shy professor of literature. The affair that ensues is described with a beauty so fierce that it takes my breath away each time I read it. The chapters devoted to this romance are both terribly sexy and profoundly wise.”—The Christian Science Monitor

About the Author John Williams (1922–1994) was born and raised in northeast Texas. Despite a talent for writing and acting, Williams flunked out of a local junior college after his first year. He reluctantly joined the war effort, enlisting in the Army Air Corps, and managed to write a draft of his first novel while there. Once home, Williams found a publisher for the novel and enrolled at the University of Denver, where he was eventually to receive both his B.A. and M.A., and where he was to return as an instructor in 1954.He remained on the staff of the creative writing program at the University of Denver until his retirement in 1985. During these years, he was an active guest lecturer and writer, editing an anthology of English Renaissance poetry and publishing two volumes of his own poems, as well as three novels, Butcher’s Crossing, Stoner, and the National Book Award–winning Augustus (all published as NYRB Classics).John McGahern (1934-2006) was one of the most acclaimed Irish writers of his generation. His work, including six novels and four collections of short stories, often centered on the Irish predicament, both political and temperamental. Amongst Women, his best-known book, was short-listed for the Booker Prize and made into a popular miniseries. His last book, the memoir All Will Be Well, was published shortly before his death.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Classic American Realistic fiction By Miriam C. Jacobs Williams's Stoner is old-school American Realism at its best, modern in presenting story without explanation, allowing the reader to interpret. The writing is clean, clear, and emotionally engaging. The narrative is linear, the voice consistent in its focus and level of omniscience. The title character, a particular man in a particular time and place. a person who succeeds by some measures and fails by others, whose excellence and integrity go unrecognized until past time it will do him any good, stuck for life in a loveless relationship (his wife is bi-polar, although the novel obviously - 1965 publication - does not know that word), his story is one of the human predicament.Apart from literary considerations, this book is also an argument for the institution of tenure. Early in his career, Stoner has a falling out with a colleague, Lomax, and when this fellow rises to power, becomes a department chair, Stoner is made a political victim and suffers deeply, in life-altering ways. As often happens in the real world, this falling out proceeds not from anything tangible, but from a misunderstanding. Lomax has a chip on his shoulder because of a physical deformity, a condition that no wise impairs Stoner's attitude. In fact, he likes and respects Lomax, but is unable to overcome his innate reserve well enough to demonstrate it.At a party, Lomax gets drunk and shares the pain of his youth, the taunting of other children and consequent distancing his handicap enforces. The next day, Lomax is embarrassed about this unburdening, and as people will do, blames the witness. When Lomax rises to the top, he persecutes Stoner by assigning him, semester after semester, year after year, a schedule of four freshman comp classes, widely separated on the weekly calendar to maximize inconvenience - in essence, torture. Later, when Stoner falls into a serious and meaningful relationship with a young fellow professor, Lomax goes after her, scapegoats her, threatening to ruin her career and personal reputation, and Stoner is forced to give it up, this connection. In both these situations, it is tenure that saves Stoner's job - a job that has become misery, affliction, that only the teaching and helping students partially rectify. Therefore, tenure does for Stoner exactly what it is intended to do - protects him from political change and personal vendetta.I was amused and somewhat salved to learn that freshman English students one hundred years ago were as empty of academic background, and as puzzled about why their professor was so excited, engaged, adamant about a subject that to them is of no importance, a requirement they simply have to get through, fake their way through, as first and second-year college English students are now. I had imagined that students 'in the day' were better motivated and better educated to begin with. Nay, not so, Gentle Reader. The fact that every new teaching post involves a term-long sales pitch is not only my problem, or a contemporary one, not a result of pop culture or decay, but an old, old fact of life, part of what you have to deal with if you want to teach English. Most students don't care for or about writing and literature, and must be convinced these things matter. Finding out that the problem is this old makes me feel better about it, and better about the world, too.
