Review

“Sanders's tense voice lends a gritty heft to the time-honored story of a man blessed with a very specific set of skills…Sanders keeps forward momentum at maximum velocity, and manages to slip in a few nifty plot twists at the last second, including a terrific hook that sets up a sequel. American Blood is a thrill ride more than worth the admission.” ―Shelf Awareness, starred review

"A thrill ride." ―Library Journal“Ben Sanders's American Blood is an intense, action-packed crime novel that smoothly unspools the background of its enigmatic lead character.” ―Associated Press“A fast-moving thriller that leaves a trail of blood and grit across the pages. Great dialogue and a hero who won't stay hidden make this a winner for crime fans.” ―Kirkus, starred review"Readers know from the first page of this amazing novel that they’re in for a hard-boiled feast...A stunning achievement and a likely breakout book from a talented New Zealand author."―Booklist, starred review

“Sanders can write an action-packed scene.” ―Publishers Weekly“This novel has it all--great characters that are all too-real, switch-blade sharp writing, dialogue that would bring a smile to Elmore Leonard's face and a plot that grabs a reader by the collar, squeezes hard and never lets go. American Blood is a first-rate, first-class, top-tier thriller and Ben Sanders hits it far and deep. This is one book that flat-out demands to be read. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. If you love a good thriller, then look no further than American Blood.” ―Lorenzo Carcaterra, New York Times bestselling author of Sleepers and The Wolf“For lovers of Jack Reacher and Jason Bourne there is a new gun in town - an noble loner called Marshall Grade with a blazing gun and burning desire to right wrongs. Violence, action, thrills, suspense, excitement, and heroism in a masterfully crafted fast-paced work of genre fiction By Jim American Blood is a masterfully crafted work of genre fiction that will appeal to guys who love guy movies (assuming they are also guys who at least occasionally enjoy reading genre fiction). I only had to read a few pages to understand why American Sniper actor Bradley Cooper signed a deal to produce and star in a movie version of this novel and I can't wait to see it. Ben Sanders's writing is lean and crisp. His vivid descriptions make scenes and action come alive on the page. For me, reading American Blood was like reading a movie. Sanders writes without literary pretensions and his writing totally gets out of the reader's way. And he is masterful at pacing. Overall, American Blood is a fast-paced novel, but Sanders gives you opportunities to catch your breath without interrupting the flow.Readers who enjoy the crime fiction of Lee Child, Elmore Leonard, James Ellroy, Karin Slaughter, and Michael Connolly, et al, should enjoy American Blood, though American Blood contains some graphic violence that I've not seen in novels by any of those authors with the exception of Slaughter (e.g., her Pretty Girls).Being a work of genre fiction, American Blood of course has its share of stock characters, cliches, and tropes, which Sanders skillfully weaves together to tell a rip-roaring story.Anyone who is in the market for a work of literary or quasi-literary fiction that conveys deep yet subtle shades of meaning and profound social commentary should pass on this. Anyone who is in the market for seriously good, heroic, old-fashioned, action- and violence-packed escapist entertainment aimed at a popular audience shouldn't hesitate to grab a copy.

The main character is even named Marshall. If you enjoy a fast paced plot with plenty of action, this is the book for you. Sander's unusual writing style contains no wasted words which keeps the novel moving at break neck speed as Marshall Grade's efforts to save a missing girl puts him in the sights of some brutal killers. Despite being in the witness protection program, he tracks them down determined to find out where she is. Bullets fly and the blood flows as Marshall out smarts and out guns them until the end of the book when the main villain, his boss, and a professional killer called the "Dallas Man" have one last battle on the streets of Dodge, or in this case, Alburquerque, New Mexico.American Blood is a thriller that takes the reader into a world of drug running and violence. While I enjoyed the read, Marshall Grade's character seemed somewhat implausible and over the top and there were three instances of "dud" shells saving an intended shooting victim which lessened the book's credibility, but it was easy to put these minor flaws aside and enjoy the book.

Wanchoo This is one of those hard-core action-oriented noir thriller stories that will appeal to a lot of thriller readers and it definitely won't be for some folks. The main plot deals with an ex-NYC undercover policeman Marshall Grade who entered the Federal Witness Protection Program after ratting out a mafia don. He's currently sitting tight in Santa Fe (NM) when he comes across a missing woman's case. Marshall can't help but get involved with the case because of his past but the goons involved are more than willing to inflict violence. To add to the mix, is the Dallas man, an enigmatic hitman who is also after Marshall and from then on, the story just zooms along. The author makes it a completely streamlined tale which is littered with action and gore that would have made Quentin Tarantino proud. The plot twists aren't entirely our of the left field and are a bit predictable for those regular thriller readers. The way the story ends definitely points the way towards a sequel but only for those lucky/unlucky enough to survive,
